Today I had another garage sale as I was trying to get rid of some of my treasures. For those who have followed me for a while you know that I hate garage sales. I'm not going to go on another big whine session about garage sales.
We prepared a number of items that we could handle without too much difficulty. So things were lined up in the living room and carefully priced. We listened to the forecast. In fact we looked at four different forecasts. It sounded like a decent day. Things were out and we were organized. Half an hour after we started it started to rain. We had about an hour of drizzle. So do I close my sale down or tough it out. We toughed it out. The weather improved and we had lots of visitors and sold a ton of stuff.
Now you also know that one of the things I like about garage sales are the characters who come by. Today a four year old and his Dad paid us a visit. When the kid got out of the SUV I noticed that he had what looked like a sock with a weight in it. He would swing it around and I wondered what kind of toy he had. His Dad bought a couple of things. The little guy wanted to buy a board game set. By this time he had told me there was money in his sock. He also told me that he had three other socks with money in. So he made his purchase with his Dad's help to sort the money out. So it looks like it pays to "keep your money in a sock."
There's always an interesting garage sale customer and this little guy was the winner today.
Now my apologies for no picture. I'm not in the habit of carrying a camera with me. I'm too active and would probably go through a few cameras. Anyway that's my excuse for the missing picture.
You drew a very good word picture, Red. I could pretty much see the little guy with the sock from your description. Glad it turned out well and that it's over! :-)
ReplyDeleteHis patter on the socks and money was what really amused me.
Deletewell, i hope he made a good buy from you! :)
ReplyDeleteguess that same 'bank' would make a good weapon if an impromptu fight broke out. :)
Your comment on the bank being a weapon gave me a good chuckle
DeleteI LOVE garage sales!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's good that somebody likes garage sales or we wouldn't get rid of our stuff. Interesting how some people just tour garage sales for a whole day.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy them and having them. I think I enjoy watching all the people, but do find a few treasures.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is really surprising what is found on garage sales.
DeleteI can't remember the last time I paid a visit to a garage sale. Maybe because my own garage is choked with stuff.
ReplyDeleteSmart guy! You see many people who have tons of stuff and they're buying a garage sales.
DeleteWell, that young 4 year old is one hell of a bright kid. Could be either a lethal weapon or a fortune in that sock?
ReplyDeleteThanks young fellow, you have made my day.
I will see if this works on the Brisbane trains with my "beloved" two legged ferals! Might scare them? Thanks Red, this could be the saviour to the ever suffering patrons of the Brisbane City Rail network. Just a menacing sock, who else but a bright 4 year old would ever have come up with this alternative? Brilliant. I shall patent this, I could be very rich. Thanks kiddo.
Cheers
Colin
He was an interesting kid. Good luck on your patent. Cut me in for 10 % since I told you about the idea!!!
DeleteNever had a garage sale myself, however, have gone to a few. There is a small town "Sussex, NB" about 1n1/2 hr up highway and they have a "Super Garage Sale" mid summer. You wear hiking boots and take a backpack. It is Fun, fun,fun to go to - all kinds of people n STUFF n FUN n FOOD - I have hardly ever purchased anything, but I think its the gathering of so many different kinds of people that is interesting.
ReplyDeleteI can actually picture the kid with the sock of change - my younger brother used to do the same thing and kept it in his sock drawyer in the back.
Have a great day.
That garage sale sounds like a blast! Now I have to look up on the statement "Keep your money in a sock."
DeleteThe perfect recycling project for those orphan socks that show up after you do the laundry, who needs a piggybank??
ReplyDeleteI enjoy going to yard sales, but I absolutely hate having them! Glad you had a successful one, in spite of the weather!
ReplyDeleteRed.
ReplyDeleteYep mate, "no worries" as we say. I'll cut you in for 10%. However, I'll have to give the patent a name. What's the young kid's name? He can get 40%. I can just visualise a carriage full of we, the sufferers, all banishing our "odd" socks as personal protectors. The mind boogles at the scenario.
Cheers
Oh and if it is Canadian father's day, have a great day,"sans snow"!!!!
Colin
our neighborhood has a years sale...i do not participate but my kids sell hot dogs and soda for a buck and rake in the cash!!!!!
ReplyDeleteQuite a few neighborhoods run a block sale or close sale . Many people come to these because there are 10 or so sales in the same place.
DeleteHot dog and pop for a buck sounds like a great price.
Money in a sock..what a kid. I used to keep money in a hankie all tied up..so a sock would work great! Happy Father's Day..do you celebrate it up there? Hope you had a great day! :)
ReplyDeleteYes we do Father's Day . Thanks for the good wishes.
DeleteI have one child in Chicago and one in Vancouver , B.C. The one in Chicago is presently in Austria.
I always, always, always enjoy your most positive take on people. I could just see the wee lad with his money...looking and looking, finding the article of much delight! and then spending his hard saved money, he keeps in a sock!!

I wasn't quite fast enough because A little guy like that deserves to get his purchase free.
DeleteI absolutely love garage sales. My friend and I went out to several around here on Saturday. I ended up with some wonderful items including a beautiful, never-worn suede winter coat, some also unused dishware and a few books - all for $12. It works for me.
ReplyDeleteYour kidlet story is a hoot. I guess he knows how to save his money by socking it away. ;)
Well, why didn't you show up at my sale. I have a nice leather bag that would go with your coat!!!
ReplyDeleteI like kids like this little guy.
That's so cute the little fella carries his money around in a sock, he's learning the value of money from the sounds of it and we need more parents to teach their children this. I won't go on a rant, I'll save that one for a rainy day!
ReplyDeleteI love your excuse for no photo, don't think that my friends would buy that one though if I tried to 'borrow' it.
Have a wonderful week!
I've only done a couple of garage sales in my life. My attic is full of "treasures" that I my husband would gratefully bestow on others. I just have a hard time motivating myself to do all that work. Maybe I will.
