I'm a fairly avid reader. I spend the greatest amount of my time on blogs. Next to that is reading.
I read a fairly wide variety of books, but sometimes I can't find the right book at the time. That's when I can rely on some old favorites and I go back to them. I have lists of books I've read a way down on the right side of my blog.
Recently I was looking for a couple of books in the library but they are signed out and have been for some time. I've been waiting for "Oliver's Twist" which is an autobiography by Craig Oliver. Another one I've been looking for is "To Kill a Mocking Bird." I finished high school before this novel was used for study.
So because I was in a hurry I picked up a P.G. Wodehouse book. Wodehouse is well known for his English humor. He wrote the "Jeeves" stories which were a television series at one time. Wodehouse wrote 14 books using Jeeves. So I pick up a Wodehouse book and have some light reading where I don't have to concentrate too much and I get a great chuckle out of Bertie Wooster who is such an airhead and unflappable Jeeves who is Bertie's butler and always gets Bertie out of trouble.
Another writer I read when I can't find anything is Louis L'Amour. L'Amour is easy to follow and there is lots of "Rockem Sockem " action. L"Amour's heroes always draw faster than the bad guys. I'm surprised art how many people read Louis L'Amour.
I have readers I know and I always ask them what they're reading so that I can find something new . One of my 90 year old friends is a voracious reader. So I always say, Bernice , "What are you reading?" She smiles and says, "You wouldn't like what I read." So then I tease her about reading romance. Some bloggers are really good at telling what they are reading. Some bloggers have a list of books that they have read.
Sometimes I blunder into a series. I've read all of Jean Auel's Ayla stories. I like historical novels so I have read Quite a few Edward Rutherfurd. I like Leon Uris. I have also read a few James Michener's.
I am an avid reader too. I usually have 2-3 three books going at the same time. I am always scouring for new reads.
ReplyDeleteI get most of my books through the summer at yard sales. I pick them up for 25 or 50 cents, enjoy them (hopefully) and pass them along to a friend or several. Part way through the winter (like.. now) I tend to run out and that's when I'll rely on the library. Right now, I'm just finishing off The Help.
ReplyDeleteRae, I play the same game with two or three books on the go. There are always new discoveries. I also like fantasy but haven't read any for a while.
ReplyDeleteHilary , yard sales sound like a good idea. There are usually lots of books on garage sales. I usually get my books from the library.
ReplyDeleteI download my books and its mostly ebooks nowadays although I love reading paperbacks than ebooks. Now, I'm reading Jeeves stories :)
ReplyDeleteI always have one or two books on the bed stand lined up to read after I've finished the present one. Sometimes I'll even have several going at once, one in the living room and one by the bed. I never seem to lack for something to read. I read all those "Clan of the Cave Bear" books years ago and loved them.
ReplyDeleteI sent hubby to the library, well he was going, and offered to get books for me.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, my blog review buddies are reading newish books, not in our wee local library. sigh
Hubby only read non-fiction war book! I keep telling him, he knows the ending, why does he read it???
Ruby you hit a major point ebooks. I would predict that in your lifetime ebooks will be at a very high percentage. You will also live to see what comes after ebooks?
ReplyDeleteDJan,as you see I value your book reviews. I read jean Auel's stories in the late 90's when I retired.
ReplyDeleteJenn you may have a small local library, but I know that you understand that your library can get any book you want. You have to browse other libraries and wait for the book. but I think readers are patient people and can wait. I keep a list of what I would like to read.
ReplyDeleteI read the Wodehouse books years ago and really enjoyed them!
ReplyDeleteI have read most of Jean Auels Ayla Series..I do have the last one to read yet..I started it..but it is different from the rest. I might be a book hoarder..I will blog about that someday...maybe. Now with the Kindle Fire I will be back to reading some classics.
ReplyDeletePrior to Kindle I bought all my books at Garage sales.
I love reading blogs and following peoples real adventures..:)
Knatolee, you have got to be a great fan of Wodehouse. He has many more stories than Jeeves and I'll bet you've read them.
ReplyDeleteFar Side , I'm going to have to look into kindle. Our library rents something so I'm going to have to try it.
ReplyDeleteI have never been able to get on with Wodehouse. Although I read quite a lot it tends to be either for research (which means that it will be of little interest to others) or escapism (where to discuss it slightly defeats the object of the exercise).
ReplyDeleteAlan, I', sure many people read for escapism and if you shared what you read I'm sure many people would be happy o read what you've read.
ReplyDeleteI, also, am an avid reader. I have three books I'm reading right now.
ReplyDeleteI just finished the last of the Ayla series. I was not impressed. It was nothing like the first three, although you may like it.

Thanks for dropping by my blog and commenting today. It is nice to meet you. I see that you know my friend Rae. I'll keep an eye on your for some good book recommendations.
ReplyDeleteThanks Grannie Annie for dropping by Hiawatha House. When I get around to it I will move my book list close to the top of my gadgets.
ReplyDeleteOver the years I was probably called any number of things. My favorite was when the Innuit kids called me Equnga . I asked them what it meant and they told me "Crooked Mouth." You wouldn't notice but my mouth slants upward from left to right.
