3000 meters(10000 ft) of Clouds Above me Tonight

About 4:30 PM today it got dark enough  in the house to turn the lights on. Clouds built up steadily all day and it began to rain about 4:30 PM.

We didn't have cumulus clouds today but layer after layer of clouds.

Our forecast predicted rain for this afternoon , evening , night and tomorrow. So you know that a major system is moving into the area. The radar map show a large cloud system slowly moving north from Montana and curving in toward the Rocky Mountains. This is when we get a major rainfall. As I said in a post before, the air mass has to rise when it hits the Rockies and when it rises it cools and  dumps the rain on us. This system has come over the mountains of the north western states. Somehow much of the moisture remained in the system and it is released over us.

When we get west winds we don't get rain. The air moves over the Rockies and all the moisture falls on the west slopes of the Rockies.

So you see at 4:30 PM this afternoon we had a huge build up of cloud which was full of moisture and some of it fell on us. With a very thick cloud layer much sunlight is blocked so we have to sit in the dark or turn the lights on.

Since I like rain I'm fine. I like going out for a long walk in the rain. I think I'll have a good chance to walk in the rain tomorrow.

  1. sounds nice. we could use some rain here in texas, but i'd gladly let the western states have it to help with their wildfires...

  2. Yes , we've had rain so it would be nice if Colorado got something to douse the fires.

  5. My dear Red!

RAIN!!! I have had enough of it here in
so-called "Sunny Brisbane". It won't stop!
So Gene Kelly and his "Singin' in the Rain" is not at the top my my loveable songs!
The American states which are being plagued by bush fires, well that is so terrible. I just wish I could sent our whole of the Pacific Coastline rain across. We don't need any more.
There is nothing worse than winter floods.
And with this rain and from somewhere, Brisbane has been plagued with a flu and conjunctivitis epidemic. I have both!!! Oh, the joys of the weather.
Cheers in between nose blowing and wheezes!

    1. Precipitation doesn't seem to have any moderation at all. It's either all or nothing.
Get better soon so you can enjoy your tough winter!

  8. Red we also got a torrential downpour tonight but tomorrow and Thursday it's calling for sunny skies. I sure hope so, I have an outdoor project on my mind I'd like to get done.

I also love walking in the rain, not when it was coming down as it was tonight, but in a soft gentle rain. Tonight just going from my car to the house I was soaked, and that's only about a minute or minutes at a fast pace.

Have a wonderful day and I hope you enjoy your walk!

  9. When we have rain here in the summertime, we also have thunderstorms and lightning, so I rarely go outside, and surely not to walk! I wish I could...there are so many things to see and photograph (if I could figure out a way to keep the camera dry without buying one of those fancy rain hoods for it!). Very ominous looking cloud there!

    1. Yes I understand a major portion of the mid west is on the dry side. My daughter in Chicago says she could do with some rain.

  11. Glad to hear the rain doesn't bother you Red. Me neither. We had a great walk out at the track yesterday with PJ in tow after the storm was over. So, we come home wet - change and have a nice cuppa tea. Nice photos and we have been plauged with fluffy clouds , also cumulus - thndr n lgtng, high winds and torrential downpours. Today is still overcast but not raining yet. Nice information in regard to how you get the rain. That was very interesting.

    1. You also have some very interesting weather patterns there and lots more rain than we'll ever get. Our average precipitation for the year is 14 in.

We had rain on the weekend, thankfully. It's been dry.
Water is at mid-August levels. My wetland is a dryland.
