All Old Guys should Walk

All old guys should walk daily for exercise and good health.

A few nights ago I did my walk and wrote on Face Book that I had just got in from a refreshing walk. One of my friends replied in a joking way "sick."  That got me thinking a little more seriously about walking.

Once cycling season ends for me I start a nightly walking routine. Sometime in the evening I do a 30 minute walk. It's thirty minutes because that's what my route takes. I try to go out even when the weather is rather nasty. If I get a little soft then I tend to stay in so I keep on walking.

Walking is always considered to be an excellent form of exercise. From walking you get some conditioning and strength building. Walking is very safe and has a low rate of injuries. After that you get fresh air and a whole lot of tension relief.

Walking can be suited to each individual. I walk by myself most of the time so I can set my own pace. I walked this afternoon because there's some ice on the sidewalk and you can't see it at night. I happened to notice an awful lot of sea gulls flying over. I stopped and watched . There were literally thousands of birds that flew over. It appeared that they were mostly young of this year or from last year. So my point is you can do different things on a walk. I also stop for geese, swans and chickadees! Once in a while I do walk with people and it is pleasant.

Since I've lived in the same neighborhood for many years I like to stop and visit with people. Unfortunately, very few people walk. So I always say, "It's only me and the bad guys out there." I believe that if people are out on their streets it makes for a much safer community.
Not today's walk but I've included the birding part

So I jokingly say "guys" but I would never forget the gals. The same thing goes for everybody. Walking is very beneficial.

  3. i just want you to be safe, above all. if you go by yourself too often and on a set routine, 'bad guys' can learn that routine too easily. just be safe and walking will keep you well. :)

    1. It's safe here. The bad guys may be kids tearing around. Very little serious crime. Very little attack on the individual.

    1. Hey, deer season or no deer season, you can't be hunting within a mile of a residence here.

  5. My Stepdad would so agree with you Red. He says he may be stiff when he gets up but once he's up and moving it works everything out. At 75 he still works four days a week and cuts wood to sell on the side. In truth he's way younger than his years.
I firmly agree if more people spent time outside in their neighborhoods everyone would get to know each other and be better off for it.
Like Tex said - stay safe!

  7. I agree with you that walking is indeed a good form of exercise and unlike jogging, it won't put too much impact on your knees.

I chanced upon your blog through Ms Jenn's of Cottage Country Reflections. Would you like us to follow each other?

    Enjoy your weekend :)

    1. Thanks for stopping by and visiting my blog. Look at my blog and only follow me if you think you are interested in what I have to say. I find blogs from other countries interesting because in photos alone you see so many things that you don't know about.

    1. Great to meet your neighbors when you're out. Then they know who belongs in the area.

  10. Red that's fantastic that you go out walking every day. I hope I have half your spunk and energy when I reach your age. I don't like being idle for too long, but the things I do involve walking for other reasons than just for a walk.

    Have a wonderful week!

  14. I totally agree.. walking is wonderful exercise. I have Benny as a reason to walk in the morning (a 40 minute route) but I'll sneak in an extra walk in the afternoon more often than not. And I agree that it would be nice to walk with someone else now and then, but there's so much to see (and photograph) that the time flies anyway. Keep on walking!

  15. I like to walk...It's a mile up on our place a mile across and a mile back and then a mile across...I try to do that at least once a day. Then every other day I walk the shelter dogs...depending on how many they get at least 1/2 a mile each...more if there are not many dogs.

    Good Post!

    1. Yes, I could tell that you do a lot of walking looking after the irrigation system. Although I did see a quad in some pictures.

    1. Now be careful with labeling me smart. It could go to my head and hat might be dangerous!
I would you get lots of walking with the chores you have.
