The grass is just covered. |
The first day of snow is always a downer. Once we get past the first snow things don't seem so bad. We get quite few of these false starts where the snow falls and melts. Now we know it's going to melt and we will get more nice weather and probably some very warm days. Golfing and cycling are not over. Towards the end of October and the beginning of November the snow will accumulate and even then we can get a Chinook or mild spell and lose the snow.
Snow at this time of year is always wet and half melts as it hits the ground. The ground still has heat so snow melts. The roads have more heat so the snow does not stay on the roads.
The lilac leaves holding some snow. |
The foothills to the west are to get 10 cm (4 in.) of snow. The Rockies will get much more.
So for now it's kind of a rest day where you can stay inside . In a couple of days we will be finishing some more fall gardening.
guess you need a chance to 'break in' to the new season. :)
ReplyDeleteBreak in is right! It helps to get used to things if it's a little gradual.
DeleteThat first light snowfall makes you realize the change of seasons is for real, no kidding, not fooling. I still have some fall bulbs to tuck in the ground this weekend.
ReplyDeleteYes, somethings can really get your attention.
DeleteEnjoy the time off before you need to get busy.
ReplyDeleteWell, if you can call catching up on some vacuuming "time off."
DeleteIt seems odd to be able to predict weather.
ReplyDeleteI quite like the idea of knowing from one year to the next what winter is going to be like.
We can probably sum that up in one or two words...cold!
DeleteI was in shirt sleeves today, and had to put on a light coat after work tonight.I can wait but enjoy it once it comes, a few months from now I hope.
ReplyDeleteAnd we could still get a shirt sleeve day yet but the cold stuff is more likely.
Deletehere, the teachers have the hardest time with the first snow fall. all the kids want to get out of their seats and look out of the window at the snow.
ReplyDeletedid you have that experience?
Yes they would like to watch snow or many other things which were going on out side the classroom.
DeleteIt's cold and windy here, but no snow yet...
ReplyDeleteWe've had lots of wind with the snow and rain just to add to the snow.
DeleteWe do not get any early snow...just miserably gray and cold weather once we are into late November. Now it is sunny fall with a little rain now and again. I am wondering what our winter will be like this year.
ReplyDeleteThe long gray stretches can be depressing.
DeleteOh, yes...the first snow fall. Ours will hit sometimes in November, if we are lucky. We need to be lucky this year or there won't be any farming next year. I have to put aside my (I don't like winter feelings) and be happy for snow. And wind and rain and ice and dark and dreary and COLD.
ReplyDeleteSo I can have NEXT YEAR!!!!

Yes, reality has to click in sometimes so I hope you get snow.
DeleteI'm one of those people who loves snow so I'd be quite excited. I don't think we get nearly enough . :)
ReplyDeleteI guess you get enough though that it gets old quickly.
Stay in and stay warm!
I never worry about warm. there are too many ways to keep yourself warm.
DeleteI cross country ski so I like to see snow.
Hi
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Young,NSW - I have arrived and the last thing I wanted to see was your blog on SNOW! ha ha.
It has turned bitterly cold and snow is falling - yes that bloody white stuff in areas around Young.
Thankfully it hasn't been know to snow here, BUT who knows??? Canberra was freezing for the reunion and is expecting snow flurries tomorrow! (Saturday 13th.October) The temp in Canberra for the two mornings was -1 degrees celsius! Here it was 6 celsius this morning and raining!
E-mail following!
Cheers
Colin (here, there and everywhere at present)!!
I am going to have to look at Australia and climate. I didn't think places got that cold. I know Australia is a very large country but didn't realize it extended that far south.
DeleteKeep warm!
Eeeeeeeek! I am so not ready for that! That doesn't usually happen here until Hallowe'en at the earliest. We haven't even had a true killing frost yet (it's late this year) and the farmers are still out harvesting soybeans.
ReplyDeleteI do enjoy winter, but I need a little more time to transition. :)
It's been a great year for harvest. My brothers in Sask finished about two weeks ago. they had not one drop of rain for the whole harvest.
DeleteAnyway it's still early so your snow is still a ways off.
you got snow also! Ours melted..I am sure more will come:(
