I Have a Pulse

This morning I went for my annual medical checkup which was a year late. I found a different Doc and was much impressed.

This doc sent me for my lab work about six weeks before the checkup. So the first thing he did was to go over the lab results and tell me what they indicated. All test results were in the normal range. He set up a detailed chart by asking just about everything in my history. Then he started a very thorough methodical physical examination. I've never had a blood pressure cuff put on so carefully. He checked my skin for any spots which may indicate skin cancer. He checked my lungs and put the stethoscope on three positions on each side. So you get the drift. This guy did a super check up. I told him that I was pleased with his thoroughness and he told me that he liked to do a check up the way he would like to be checked.

I've had annual check ups since my mid forties. Things were done today that had never been done before. There was communication with each action. My liver was checked! My abdomen well palpitated. My spleen was found and checked. Pulse was taken at my ankles as well as wrists! This never happened before. I appreciated the whole procedure and felt that this Doc really knew what was there and how it was.

So after I was finished I began to think about conditions. I have my own knees, hips, liver, heart, lungs, kidneys. Some people do not have their own of these things. I'm missing some teeth and have some fake teeth. I have some loss of sight but I have my own eyes! I have some loss of hearing but I still have ears!

So I had a very good day. My tests were fine. The examination was well done. I went away happy.

    I still have a pulse!

  1. Isn't it wonderful to be surprised by a medical professional? My doctor is very thorough, too, but nothing like this! Congratulations on getting ahold of such a gem of a doctor, Red. I am envious! :-)

    1. Well, I don't think this guy is permanent. He's part time. I get the feeling he may just be in between positions.

  4. Wonderful to hear that all is well with you!
Your Doctor sounds like a keeper.
A couple of times I've had a nurse say I can't find your pulse to which I've replied 'well, I assure you I'm breathing.'

    1. Funny how sometimes obvious things can't be found. I had a lab tech one time who couldn't find the vein for taking blood!

  8. Seems like you have scored a good one.
My, Dr. Alexius Loo, born in Hong Kong but has lived here all his life, is the same.
He checks EVERYTHING - starting with his scales!
I have great faith in him as he understands that I am riddled with Cerebral malaria which lies dormant in you for the rest of your life and can erupt with fatal results. No real cure yet has been found, but can be treated if it erupts. And by God, you know when this is starting. I haven't had a relapse since 1993, I think.
My previous doctor, now retired, also was well aware of this problem. He was with the Australian Medical Corps in Vietnam.
With malaria of this type, your immune system
    is Zilch!
So mate, stick, with this fellow. You MUST have complete faith in your doctor.

    1. I don't think this guy is permanent. I was in a situation where I needed a port in a storm.
Malaria is certainly a nasty piece of business. We certainly don't have it here and only a few people who have been in the tropics have it.

  11. I am not surprised by your continued good bill of health Red. You walk, you bicycle, you skate, you garden - you keep both your mind and your body busy - you eat mostly healthy (right)- some people forget to do this and some just are not bothered. I feel keeping our mind and body is essentially good to keep us healthy and mind alert - sure pays off as you grow older and go to those checkups. I feel quite happy with my last checkup - my Doc feels I might still be here at 110 ha,ha I was also thinking about what you said about conditions and like that paragraph - yep, I just turned 70 and I have all my parts and they're working pretty good. Take care Red.
