Before our city started it's own public transit system in the 1960's, a private company provided limited service. At that time the city was less than 20000 in population.
A couple provided the service. Gordon drove the bus and his wife ran a small restaurant /bus terminal. The wife was the director /scheduler/operator/ticket seller and was energetic and well liked.
So the city fathers thought that our new transit terminal should have a name so it was decided to call it Sorensen Station after the couple who operated the little bus system.
The statue is placed outside the new bus terminal and is called Waiting for Gordon. I think the artist caught the energy this women had to run a very original and creative business.

oh, i love it! a great look on that hard-working face!
ReplyDeleteYes , I think they got some feeling out of this one.
DeleteOkay, that cracked me up!!! My husband is perpetually late so I am ALWAYS waiting for Gordon!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI love all these statues you have!
Well, now some day you can make a statue of yourself and you know what you can call it.
DeleteShe does look like a handy person to have around.
ReplyDeleteI would think that there was very little she couldn't do.
DeleteAre these statues all done by the same artist, Red? I think I missed that post...
ReplyDeleteMost of them are by different artists. I should have included this info in the posts so I will do a post and include some of the things I've been asked.
DeleteI like her Red! She reminds me of my Mom who worked as a waitress for years. One place she worked was the local Dairy Queen where the bus stopped in our little town and where I left for and returned from college many times. She not only reminds me of my Mom but all the kind ladies in all the little places around town - hard working women.
ReplyDeleteThis would certainly bring back some good memories. The old buses always seemed to stop at a restaurant because I guess they were open extra hours. I was let off on the highway 4 miles north of the farm. sometimes i walked home in the dark and sometime someone picked me up.
DeleteI like this one a lot!
ReplyDeleteShe really looks like she's actually at work.
DeleteIt must be a great town. I really do enjoy street art of all types.
ReplyDeleteI liked our town better 40 years ago when the population was less than 25000.
DeleteShe is in charge! :)
ReplyDeleteIt really shows in charge and you better move it.
DeleteThat's just how stuff was done in the olde days - how sweet that she would be waiting with a cuppa for Gordon - Nice statue, very well depicts the character, er, ghost #8.
ReplyDeletePeople really had to scramble at things they could pick up. Now all the bigs have taken over.
DeleteOh yes, this statue DOES convey a lot. I love it !! I see what you mean now about some statues being able to depict charachter. Thanks for showing me .
ReplyDeleteHey , I'm no expert. With the ten done it's a little easier to compare.
DeleteThese are fun tales to share, I enjoy the statues
ReplyDeleteInteresting how they all had a connection to development of the city.
DeleteShe has the face of a working woman who knows how to get things done! I love this one, Red. She's someone I would have loved to visit with. :-)
ReplyDeleteI think you're right. I taught her grandson and great grandson. I would ask them more questions now about their Grannie. I know they were very please with the statue.
DeleteI love it...if there is family there they should too!

The family was very pleased with this statue. A little bragging on my part...I taught her grandson and great grandson. They were great kids.
DeleteWhat is the population of your town now? I live outside town both in NZ and on Lewis but I think Napier with it's population of nearly 60,000 is pretty good because it can support infrastructure. However it is easier to feel part of Stornoway with it's population of 12,000.
ReplyDeleteI like the statue. It is the face of a brisk, practical woman used to hard work, who enjoys it too. I always thought that it is most difficult to capture emotions and character of a person in a sculpture than paintings or drawing. Great work by the artist. Thanks for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteThis one is a beauty. She has one of those faces that everyone knows and recognizes as a hard working but warm woman. This artist did a great job.
ReplyDeleteWhat a talented artist. I just don't know how people can capture a spirit this way.
ReplyDeleteWell done!
Cheers from Cottage Country!
