The green Onion |
The official name of our water tower is the Horton Spheroid. Locally it's affectionately known as the Green Onion. It was built in 1959. It's 132 ft. high and holds 500 000 gal. of water. It's built in top of a reservoir which holds 2,300,000 gal. It was first built to provide water pressure for the town. Now it's just used for back up water storage. There are two tennis courts on top of the ground reservoir so you get some idea of the size.
The green Onion wast built on a high point in the town so now it is visible from almost any part of the city. Strangely there's no sign in this water tower.

It's an interesting piece of environmental sculpture.
ReplyDeleteI never thought of this engineering structure as a sculpture, but you have a good point.
DeleteWow...that is a huge water tower! And it does look like a green onion : )
ReplyDeleteIt's surprising how large these towers are.
DeleteWe have one in this area that looks a lot like this, but I think ours is blue/gray.
ReplyDeleteYes I've seen them and they certainly are different colors.
DeleteWe have one in town that is blue and looks like yours..no name..I wonder why?
ReplyDeleteThe no name is curious. Ours is in a residential area where only residents travel. I suppose if it was near a highway it might have a name on it.
DeleteThis is a beauty.
ReplyDeleteI wonder how freaky it would be to go inside one of these?
DeleteThat is a funny shape and the nickname too. So right.
ReplyDeleteQuite a few are this shape. there must have been one company that built them.
DeleteWe have one at the lake and its bright blue - Yours does look like an onion. Cool - Nice photo and interesting.
ReplyDeleteWith the huge projector these days they have projected images on it. It makes for a cool screen.
DeleteLove Love the Green Onion Rd. Daniel has some great shots. B
ReplyDeleteDaniel has a super blog.
DeleteWe also have a similar water tower in our town that is sky blue. I would have posted had I known!
ReplyDeleteWell, you can still post. Some bloggers photograph barns and some do towers.
DeleteI haven't seen a water tower here in Bellingham. I wonder if we have one. Being a recent transplant, I don't know much of the history. It sure DOES look like a green onion, Red. :-)
ReplyDeleteNowadays they use pumps to move our water and produce pressure.
Deletei had seen your comment calling it the green onion and i'm glad you showed it to us! too cute!
ReplyDeleteand your feed came thru timely this time!
Well, a request you know! First request I've ever had!!!
DeleteHa! Green Onion. I like that!
ReplyDeleteI guess we have a lot of gardeners in our town!
DeleteMy daughter has a water tower in city of New market.
ReplyDeleteLocated at Yonge Street in New market, Ontario
on Google map. Interesting blog again to-day. I don't even know where our one is. In my small town.
Today towers aren't built . They use a system of pumps to move your water and produce pressure.
DeleteNow that you've featured it, they should honour you by painting it and calling it the Red Onion. ;)
ReplyDeleteThere goes a good play on words again! I like it!
DeleteInteresting Red. I suppose they'll all obsolete now in the big cities. Though our small town still has one in use....
ReplyDeleteYes, they are still used in small towns. With the huge pumps and a system they can move the water and produce the pressure.
ReplyDeleteIt does look like an onion! I've never seen a water tower shaped like that. This was very interesting.
ReplyDeleteNow thát's a BIG onion!! :-))
ReplyDeleteWarm greetings from the Netherlands,

That really IS a big green onion! Love those whacky water towers.
ReplyDeleteWow, this is interesting but one would think that there would be signs, how are tourists supposed to know what this is without signs? Looks like some big statue to me, ya sort of like a green onion. :-)
ReplyDeleteGreen onion, indeed! We have well water around here!!!!
