I've had a face book page for about 4 or 5 years. I haven't found anything on face book that really excites me and a lot that aggravates me.
I started a face book page to keep up with family as I am far away from them. At first there was information from nieces and nephews. I guess they grew tired of the thing and gradually one by one did not post on face book.
The aggravating part is when people like and recommend a bazillion different things that I have no interest in. People find all kinds of things from God knows where to put on thinking that I or somebody else may be interested. For example: religious pieces, food, recipes, restaurants...
Now the other day I did find something interesting to follow on face book. This is a long and convoluted story. Get ready! I like Vinyl Cafe on CBC radio. I don't miss it. Once a year they have a segment called the Arthur Awards. Arthur is the name of the dog in the story. The Arthur Awards are for somebody who does something good which is not rewarded in any other way. It's something that is a common everyday act of kindness or help that is completely volunteer.
I was not listening terribly well at the beginning of the presentation but grew very interested as the interview moved along. The guy being interviewed had walked across Canada and now was walking from the U.S. border to the Arctic Ocean. It was a fascinating interview. At the end the guy gave his face book page "The Great Hike." He had described how the previous night he had camped along the road and in the morning a buffalo was outside his tent. He looked out the tent and the buffalo was right there. To take a picture he had to back into the tent in order to get the whole buffalo in his photo.
This page really interested me. So I searched for the page. The page comes up with his photo of the buffalo. Of course, there were many more photos. Also one of the people liking the page was my friend Cheryl! What a surprise!
So this is a site I really like and if I made more effort I might find other pages I like. Oh yes, this week I began following a birds of Alberta page. It has awesome bird photos.
What do you find interesting on face book?
one day, a few years ago, i set up an account and within 15 min. closed it. that's my entire experience on face book.
ReplyDeleteYou make decisions in a hurry. I don't think you missed much.
DeleteI haven't tried finding pages on Facebook - maybe I should. I mostly just find facebook annoying.
ReplyDeleteI've bumped into the odd interesting page, but I haven't gone looking for anything.
DeleteI do keep track of friends and family on Facebook, as well as my soccer team and the local news. But I too am very tired of all the "shared" stuff I have to wade through. I have been trying to find ways to unsubscribe or "hide" a lot of stuff.
ReplyDeleteThere are some tips in these comments today on how to cut down on the useless stuff. I think I miss about half the stuff that's on as I don't spend the time to catch it.
DeleteI can't comment as I don't have a Facebook account.
ReplyDeleteYou're one of the few who aren't on face book. My wife doesn't have a page but she uses mine.
DeleteWell I have to say I like Facebook. I like it because I have connected to some family members that I have not seen in years. I have a big support group of Fragile X families all over the world and I love this!. I like staying connected with friends that I have worked with and now that I am a homemaker again I enjoy that. The things that aggravate me are people who play games and send request, chain request about if you love or good luck, and some of the crazy ads.
ReplyDeleteYou make some practical use of face book. Good! the chain things are really annoying.
DeleteI like some things about Facebook, I can kind of keep up with people I don't see in person very often. But I find a lot of it annoying too. Some pages are helpful and interesting, though. I like animal welfare pages.
ReplyDeleteIf we know enough about face book we can find pages we are really interested in. I just found one...the birds of Alberta.
DeleteI have a love/hate relationship with Facebook. I only stay on it because it is a means on staying in touch with family. I do follow some homesteading and rughooking sites...
ReplyDeleteI find it difficult to disconnect. I wonder why that is?
Love/hate is a very accurate description .
DeleteI do have a Favebook page but don't use it so much. I prefer the blog world much more.
ReplyDeleteI could leave face book but not the blog.
DeleteI too keep track of friends and family on FB, however, mostly dislike it with all the crap on there to be shared or liked. I mostly turn off notifications and don't receive any of that crap and then go check in on my pals to see what is new. I think one thing a lot of people do not know, is that you can turn off game requests, chain requests etc just by picking the down arrow in upper right corner. FB mostly is a right pain in the A_ss, but does keep you in touch - remember, nothing is free and the penallty is watching some of the crap, but then you can always set your settings to handle that.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I do love Vinyl Cafe - I have it on my ipad mini and listen through podcasts. Cheers
Thanks for the hot tips about getting rid of some of the crap. I will try it. I may offend some people but I'll take the risk.
DeleteThere is some wild stuff. I use it once in a while.
ReplyDeleteWild stuff is the understatement.
DeleteMostly I follow Facebook to see what's going on in my family's lives, since we live all over the place. And my old skydiving friends I don't see any more. But you're right: a lot of it is not interesting to me, but I can always hide those people and their stuff doesn't come up in my news feed any more. :-)
ReplyDeleteI haven't been aggressive in collecting friends so some of the people I don't keep up with.
DeleteI created an account at the insistence of a friend. But was never active at any point. Posted some pics for friends to whom I could not send a link but otherwise the accounts just taking a big nap :)))
ReplyDeleteA friend persuaded me to start an account. I wouldn't have started and account on my own.
DeleteI never post on my FB page.. I just see what family and friends are up to. I might get a bit more involved now that I'm more isolated up here in the boonies.
ReplyDeleteOne of the things I wish could be done with Facebook is to preview someone's page when they send you a friend request. There have been folks I have figured I would follow just to find that my whole page fills up with silly junk.. like their accomplishments on Farmville or something equally irritating. Then if you go to unfriend them, it becomes obvious. I'm not a big fan of that media but I can see where it has its uses.
Well, you can unfriend people who are an annoyance.
DeleteThe good Facebook pages are few and far between. I'm glad you found a few good ones.
ReplyDeleteThere's an incredible amount of junk on face book.
DeleteI enjoy some photography groups that I've joined with local photographers, and some pages, but that's about it. I don't spend much time there, and I don't socialize with the people on it. I prefer blogging.
ReplyDeleteWe have page for our naturalists group.
DeleteI like to keep up with the relatives far away. I also play a few games and take a Watercolor class twice a month at my leisure. I hear you on the recipes, and other "stuff" which I ignore. I had to hide one of my old friends stuff she was posting about politics and God about 50 times a day. :(
ReplyDeleteI do use Facebook but for the purpose of encouraging others, just as I do on my blog. However, I must say that I MUCH prefer my blog to Facebook.
ReplyDeleteI do like keeping in touch with my relatives via FB, and I find some good articles there, and I really enjoy all the photography. :)
ReplyDeleteI tried Facebook twice and all it does for me is make me mad. There was some family I thought would be nice to keep up with and see their pictures, etc., but they posted as much filth as they did family pictures. Facebook is not for me. I love blogging!
ReplyDeleteI have been enjoying Facebook more since the kids have given up on it! My youngest (age 29) went off it. But many of my peers are on it and I learn a lot and get a lot of support, like the Prostate Cancer Org. I heard the interview, too. I loved the idea of the geese, and someone on FB found a photo of them for me. I was curious and looking for inspiration!
