We've had a long stretch of mild weather. It's been such a long stretch that most of our snow is gone. It's very pleasant. Highs have been from 5C (40 F ) to 10 C (50 F ). Half the nights have been above 0 C (32 F).
So with all that in mind I got my bike out today and went for a short ride. I've never gone for a ride in March before so that is the first. I didn't get any photos today so these are from last year.
The other first for yesterday was the first robin of the year. It's always quite a thrill when you hear a robin in the neighborhood and you wait until he/she goes flying by the house.
Now I thought Mar. 18 would be a record for the first robin in my yard. I looked up my records and no. I had a first robin on Mar. 7 in 1989. Now I think the robin in 1989 might have been one that over wintered here.
I didn't get a robin photo yesterday either, but here's one from my friend taken a few years ago.
I'm glad you have thawed out. I can't see the Robin.
ReplyDeleteI have to say Red you did a post a few months ago ago about writing different things down for our children - our favorite color, how we met, etc. This past week I bought a large journal just for that and will start it very soon. I hadn't forgotten that post and found a journal I liked that I thought would hold up well. Then too I've started keeping a daily journal to pass along as well about these 'autumn of my life' days. I owe this reflection to you. So far I filled up one notebook and started a second.
ReplyDeleteI like looking back. I'm finding my Mom has forgotten so much as she has gotten older so I hope to leave my kids and grandkids something of my days gone by.
Glad you got out for a ride. Hope winter is behind you. I saw my first robin last week. Took a photo but it wasn't very good but the photo will serve as the record when I look back.
I am amazed at your record keeping.
ReplyDeleteThe osprey, Fred and Ethel, are back...so I KNOW it is spring!
ReplyDeleteLast week we cycled for the first time some more distance than the usual grocery nearby I have lost some condition I noticed, have been to much on the sofa this winter, So I have to practise some more tours.
ReplyDeleteOK then red, so you got out on your bike - WAHOO!! It'll be a while before I actually get to do that for with these two last storms in 3 days, we are back up to 8 - 10 feet. Not complaining - I don't mind Mother Nature's last minute punches at us. Besides, there's lots to do......like shovel......n shovel.....n shovel. ha,ha I have winter birds at the large feeder and have not yet seen a robin. Have a wonderful day.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's a fine Spring Equinox today, all over the Northern Hemisphere. They are having the Autumnal Equinox Down Under today. Yesterday the first of the tulip fields were "lighted up" and they said it was the earliest ever. :-)
ReplyDeleteTwo great firsts! I bet you enjoyed that first ride. It's still a little too cold here to ride and we still have a good load of snow. But I'm hopeful that the days will warm up and we can get those bikes out.
ReplyDeleteI was still riding in November on my motorcycle. Need to get my bike tuned and get on it. It is barely cool enough for a light jacket all week here.
ReplyDeleteYou are about 10 degrees warmer than we are. We are in the arms of that dreaded jet stream. It's so cold! The sap isn't flowing well, either. Sad for producers. They need 10+ in the day and below zero at night.
ReplyDeleteneat that you keep track of these things! hooray for 'pre-springtime' bike ride!
ReplyDeleteI love the warm weather. I am so happy that you all are getting some warmth also. It has been a cold long winter. We have a lot of Robins in the yard. Happy Spring!
ReplyDeleteYou're certainly a lot warmer than we are. We haven't gotten above freezing since a couple of brief days last week.
ReplyDeleteNice bike!! You're doing better than us. Still lots of snow yet and the temps have been unseasonably low. Happy spring!
ReplyDeleteHi Red, It does sound like you may be having a pretty early spring after a heavy-snow type of winter. Congrats on getting the bicycle out.
ReplyDeleteIt's spring when Mr. Klein gets his bike out. An even better predictor than that stupid groundhog!!!
ReplyDeleteTracey
Good for you Red! It is warmish here in Southern Ontario. There are still patches of snow. Hopefully most of it will have melted in a week or so. It has not been particularly warm but I would think it was one of the sunniest March we ever had so it helped.
ReplyDeleteWhich reminds me... Ive got a bike in the shed sitting unused.......
ReplyDeleteA Robin lucky you! My other baby brother says he can hear one in our woods...
ReplyDeleteHappy cycling:)
we love our bikes ... always take them with us when we go camping. great exercise. ( :
ReplyDeleteHappy Spring, Red!
ReplyDeleteWe have lots of Robins here. For some unknown reason the Robins gather along the sides of the roads. I'm so afraid of hitting one as they all fly when a car passes by. Glad you have an early spring.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt you are delighted with your milder weather. Here it is ever so gradually getting cooler. Soon I will rely on stories of spring in the northern hemisphere to cheer me up.
ReplyDeleteA Robin? I haven't seen one one yet. Glad you got to go for a bike ride. The first one of the year I recall is rejuvenating.
ReplyDeleteHappy Spring to you, Red! Good for you for getting your bike out for some exercise.
ReplyDeleteMy dh finally had to go buy a cyclotron trainer because the weather has prevented him from getting out. I'm glad the weather is getting nicer there- it always feels good to get out and about after a long winter.
ReplyDeleteHappy Spring Red. Your bike is beautiful and by golly you can ride it. Oh lucky you. I won't go into my story of bikes. I am sure I had blabbed on your blog at one time. So happy riding my friend.
ReplyDeleteLooks like I may have missed some posts of yours. With all Birthdays here at my blog. And still a continued B. day Sunday for Sid Sunday coming.
I actually got up two entries one gritters and some for Shadows reflections. Thank you for your comments to me Red.
You are a friendly guy. I want to call you Mr. Red.
Mr Rogers the neighbour guy everyone admired him.
What a wonderful day in your neighborhood. Catchy tune.
Oh Spring!!! Happy Spring....it is the most awaited season. Nice nike by the way.
ReplyDeleteI saw a Robin in my yard two days ago. I hear them singing in the mornings.
ReplyDeleteHooray for dusting off the bike and first robins!
ReplyDeleteRed that's awesome you spotted a Robin, I was so happy to see the Geese returning a while back as well and then... just like that it dumps on us again. What can I do but chuckle as I was our shoveling this morning? This is Alberta after all where we can experience all seasons within a matter of days sometimes! lol
