Me being somewhat lazy and disorganized went out and thought if I put my snow stick on a table in the yard, I won't have to get my boots full of snow and it will be easy to take photo. In other words, I won't have to bend down to get a photo. I reasoned that the table would show an even level amount of snow. My plan worked well.
We've had some mild spring like weather. The snow on the table melts faster than snow on the ground. Snow melt is influenced by shade or direct sunny spots. The snow melts on the south side of the house first. So now I'm left with a bare table. No snow! I also found that there was a pot saucer on the table so that my snow stick didn't get to the table surface.

Now we still have tons of snow around. There's still lots of snow and ice on the roads.
Snow in the yard |
Snow in the front yard where I shoveled snow off the driveway. |
Now next year I'm going to have to improve on my snow stick. Maybe I should get one of those super dooper snow measurers they use on TV weather to show how much snow we receive. Then I could go on YouTube and give my own weather report.
We still have about 15" left. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteThe sad part about 15 in left is that you could get more. We tend to get some pretty nasty storms in March.
DeleteMore on the way Saturday, I think! Sigh. We're down to 10", though!
DeleteWell, you've got a few months to figure it out til next winter!
ReplyDeleteI'm not gonna think about snow for the next 6 months!
DeleteYes a weather station linked to your laptop would be a great idea.
ReplyDeleteBut I don't have a laptop. I have an ipad. Does that count?
DeleteOurs is 98% gone. It is still a little wet but we have broken 55F for two days! I must get outside and see what is growing.
ReplyDeleteThat's super weather. There will be lots of plants that are very active.
DeleteHad to laugh about your snowstick adventures. You have still a lot of snow to look at, that will take some time to melt I am afraid.
ReplyDeleteWe will be lucky if the snow is all gone by the end of March.
DeleteWe have a lot more snow around here. But a few mild days and it'll all turn into a puddle.
ReplyDeleteWe could get lots more too. We usually get a lot of snow in March.
DeleteI think you should go on youtube and have your own channel "Red's WEather Stick",eh. ha,ha I see by your photos you have bare pavement and some bare spots on lawns - we are a long way from that, however, I can feel spring in the air.Have a nice day .......and get to work on improving that snow stick.
ReplyDeleteWe may have the odd bare patch but there's still lots of snow. I'm happy for the support and suggestions for my weather channel. As you know all of this would take some substantial coin. Is there any way you could come up with a loan or something??? I'd be terribly grateful.
DeleteHi Red, If you do the YouTube thing I will be one of your subscribers!!! :-) In the meantime, who won the snow competition ... you or Far Side? :-) John
ReplyDeleteSubscriber sounds great. I think money comes along with a subscription??? I had more snow by a long way.
DeleteNever measured this year. I get an impression watching my dogs sink in, but we never got a big one.
ReplyDeleteThere's still time yet to get a big one...at least there's lots of time to get a big one here. We can get some huge storms in March.
DeleteYes, you certainly do have lots of snow left, even if the snow table is bare. You'll be doing it differently next year, I suspect. :-)
ReplyDeleteyYs, I will look for another location. On the other hand a winter without snow would be great with no shoveling.
Deletelaughing at the flaws in your system. yes, the quickened melt of the table would really ruin your accumulation measures. :)
ReplyDeleteI think the proper way to measure is measure each snowfall and add them up.
DeleteMaybe you should! I'd watch you on You Tube!
ReplyDeleteWell, it may compete with the paint drying channel!!!
DeleteHere in Oregon the lack of snow this winter has many people worried about drought conditions later in the year. I see from your pictures that this isn't a problem for you.
ReplyDeleteWe have a good moisture supply. However, this will surprise you, our annual moisture is 12 in.!
DeleteYou've got me thinking of a snow stick. Loved the humor in your post.
ReplyDeleteI've figured out the proper way to measure snow. It's like rain. Measure each snowfall and just add them up!
DeleteWell, it was only your first year. I'm sure next year you'll have all the kinks worked out!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. Things will run tickety boo next year.
DeleteDidn't your mother teach you that laziness does not pay?
ReplyDeleteYes you need a new spot! A zoom lens on your camera helps too when it gets real deep! I think we have about 2 inches left on ours and it will be gone in a few days cause it is downright balmy here:)
ReplyDeleteLots of people around where I live give weather reports on Facebook and various local weather websites and it's fascinating.
ReplyDeleteWe had 30 inches combined in two consecutive snowstorms here in KY. I loved it!! :)
ReplyDeleteWell our driveway is melting snow more and on the sides after dear hubby moved the car partway down the driveway so the sun is melting the snow and sides of the deep snow.
ReplyDeleteon side of the hill of house is grass.
I always joke about where ski areas locate their snow stick - I think it's in a gully or somewhere that collects more snow. Thanks for stopping by my blog! :)
ReplyDeleteAs of yesterday ours is all gone (for now). :) I used my patio table this year. Took two steps out on to the deck and stuck in the stick and was done. :)
