I tried Hard !

A few days ago when it was full moon I looked out and saw the picture I wanted. Things were just right for me to get the big full moon and a small silhouette of spruce tree across the moon.

So I focused the camera and zoom zoomed and took a photo. Hm Not bad but not exactly what I wanted.

Okay! Try a few more. I take a good look at the photos and then try something else. No way. Things got worse.

Now I hope I learned a few things. My point and shot will sense one part of the image. I wasn't very careful checking what was sensed. I think the branch and the moon got mixed up and hand holding a zoom isn't the greatest when you're 75.

Now maybe it would take some extra lighting on the tree to show up the branch as the photos a few minutes later didn't show much branch and the moon was right out of focus. So I guess I'll have to decide which one I want to focus on.

I like to think I learned something. We'll see when the next full moon happens if it's not cloudy.

I almost got this one, but I didn't get the branch across the moon

I got the branch sort of but the moon got fuzzy

The tree was fine but the moon did something funny
As I was doing this I was thinking of music with moon in it in some way. I was thinking of Elvis's Blue Moon. Now you can't have Blue Moon because that's mine. What else can you think of?

  1. Point and shoot cameras do have a mind of their own. I think you got a good photo on that first one.

    1. It was fun to try these shots. I threw away many others.

  2. You are getting there. If you want both then you will have to blend two images but the moon moves very quickly. I don't know what the camera has so can't really advise.

    1. Things change rapidly. I will have to look up blending images. My camera is a point and shoot but if you know anything there are options where the photographer has some control.

  3. David Niven's autobiography 'The Moon's a Balloon'.

  4. Just got in from watching the meteor shower. One would have to set a very long exposure to capture it. One little sprig of grass can block me many times. Move one way or the other to see where it will focus right.

    1. Now the moving makes sense. I missed the meteor shower...too much cloud.

  5. I would say "Reaching for the Moon" by Ella F. Nice photos Red and your first photo made me think of this title.

  6. You captured the full moon very well, with and without branches.

    1. I find the zoom is tough when you're just holding the camera in your hand.

  7. Not bad, Red! Moon River comes to mind. :-)

  8. So hard to capture what we see the way we actually see it!
Your pictures, though, are lovely. I actually the first one best.

  9. You learn more and more as you keep taking photos. These are pretty good shots!

"Man On the Moon" by R.E.M
    "Bad Moon Rising" by CCR.
And the album "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd.

  10. My camera's zoom isn't particularly useful. The only time I've shot the moon was some sunset shots at the end of July, looking back and photographing as it was- just a circle in the sky, no detail.

    1. I get some shadow and detail with what little zoom I have.

  13. Your moon shots are great Red. I'd be very happy to get those photos but haven't really had a lot of success with night time moon shots. Great job!

  14. I should think it would be easier to take a picture of the moon when it wasn't full because all that light flattens out the moonscape. But then I've never taken a picture of the moon so what do I know?

  15. Hi Red, The pictures are not bad but you are right ... The point and shoot cameras can be tricky when there are things near and far in the same frame. I think it is pretty neat that you got the blue moon photos. Well, let's see ... How about Moon Over Miami, Ray Charles, ... Moon over Miami,
Shine on my love and me,
So we can stroll beside the roll,
    Of the rolling sea.
    Etc., Etc.

  16. It's always difficult to get a shap picture when using zoom especially at night. I've had several of this experience. Problem jyst keeps on repeating. Maybe I don't learn anything :)

Your shots are pretty cool, I like when there are some branches crossing the moon, it looks like a mysterious evening.

  17. I think you did a good job of getting the branches in the shot. My moon pics are always a big white blob..it is a rare day that I actually like any that I get.

  19. I like the first one, especially when it's,blown up big and shows the craters of the moon. I bet your next try will be sensational!
