While I'm on the topic of sound or no sound, I should touch base with one of my original topics to post on. On my very first post I listed some of the things I was interested in and would post on them from time to time.
One of the topics was music. Pleasant sound! I don't think I've made very many posts about music.
My association with music is very limited. I'm not musical. I don't play any instruments and I can't sing. However, I do enjoy listening to music. My choice of music is very wide. In other words I listen to many different genres of music. That variety changes from time to time as new areas of music are discovered and once enjoyed music is forgotten.
I like listening to radio where information is given about the music...lots of information...history, performers, techniques, how the music is put together, basic music. Music is much more meaningful when you know more about it. I like listening to Randy Bachman on CBC. He calls his show"Randy's Vinyl Tap." He plays good old rock and roll and has tons of obscure information and stories.
Now I admit that I don't listen to modern commercial music at all. I am a way behind. I have excuses. Much of today's music is aimed at teens or young people. There's too much music to keep up in all genres. Some music I don't listen to such as modern country or rap. So I listen to radio stations that specialize in providing a wide variety of music and all kinds of background information. I started listening to much more jazz and blues. I like old time country and rock and roll. I like classical music. I've discovered classical religious music. Now I need a lot of help- to understand what's going on there
I like to listen to music that doesn't have commercial success but it's out there and is played. There are many good local bands and singer/ songwriters. There are some odd ball music shows like Roy's Record Room which airs on CKUA. Roy plays music that was recorded on old discs. You never know if you're going to get country and western, blues jazz or anything else.
So I'm not entirely about silence as I covered in my last post. I can listen to a lot of music in a day. I haven't downloaded much music but I realize there's lots out there to choose from.
Now how about you? Do you have special musical talent? Do you have just one variety of music that you follow? Any hints about some good music to listen to?
I listen to public radio or Cd's. i have a huge collection.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter listens to public radio. It's similar to CBC here.
DeleteI don't listen to music very much, but when I do I like New Age relaxing stuff. When I'm getting a massage if there's something I really like, I ask my therapist who it is and will put it on my smartphone so I can listen to it, along with podcasts, when I'm working out at the gym. I don't like to listen to music when I'm walking or riding the bus because then I'll miss normal sounds. :-)
ReplyDeleteI rarely listen to music if I'm outside. There's too much else to listen to in the great outdoors.
DeleteI have sung in professional choirs, as well as community choirs for years. I dropped that habit moving here! Small town community choirs are awful! I love music. I can play piano, autoharp, recorder, but I haven't played any of them lately. I love all genres. My latest fave, 7 years. I usually buy the current year's Grammies CD, but we also support local artists!
ReplyDeleteI think being able to make music adds to the listening part of music. Not many CD's are sold these days.
DeleteAbsolutely no musical talent. Cannot sing unless I have a bucket over my head. I did play the flute for several years. Both my husband and son have the music gene, though.
ReplyDeleteLike you I've tried to play an instrument. It didn't work. I just didn't understand music.
DeleteThere's a British band called Simply Red. You might like them but they are not named after you Red! No. The name refers to Manchester United F.C.. If they were named after you they would surely be called Clever Red or Nice Red... I can play the acoustic guitar and make up songs but it is a talent I have been neglecting of late.
ReplyDeleteNaming a ban after me would be pretty ironic. You play enough to experience the pleasure of music.
DeleteI listen to a lot of different music, with the exception of rap, hip hop, and metal. I don't listen to the radio though- I think it's more the chatter of DJs that drove me away from commercial radio.
ReplyDeleteA station like CKUA does not have commercials. The chatter is about the music.
DeleteI like the sound of silence and natural sounds, but I also enjoy loud music, played on a decent sound system. I played bass professionally at one time and I also play the guitar and tinker with keyboards for soundtrack music as part of my film making. I enjoy rock - the heavier the better, heavy metal and punk. I listen to other genres as well and I don't subject my friends to my music!
ReplyDeleteAgree 100% on natural songs. You've got a lot of musical talent.
DeleteNo musical skill here either, but I still enjoy listening.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you - at this age I figure I don't have to impress anyone by keeping up with current trends. I listen to what I like.
...and there is so much good music to like.
DeleteMy children and I played lots of music together when they were growing up. We loved it and between us we played violin, cello, French horn, piano, clarinet, drums, and trumpet. I still listen a variety of music, mostly quiet modern stuff, classical, show tunes, folk music from my youth, mostly when I'm doing something like washing dishes or sewing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great experience to be able to play with your kids. Yes, I really like folk music. Folk was big in the 50's and 60's.
DeleteI have no musical talent but I enjoy classical music, especially when I paint. Interesting that i can't write with music playing but when it comes to painting i have no problem. Vivaldi makes me paint faster.
ReplyDeleteOur art teacher always had music in his classroom.
Deletei work with mostly 20-somethings and 2 late-30s folks. they keep the radio on 24/7 at work. i am grateful i can take almost any kind of music for a period of time. 'cuz it's constant for 12 hours straight.
ReplyDelete12 hours is a very long shift. You're fortunate to be able to work with young people. Oops , you're young! No offense!
DeleteI don't think you would be interested in my kind of music. I like opera. My husband likes country and western and does not like the opera. I am not a big fan of country and western music. I was introduced to opera when I was very young. My father played the piano and used to sing and play certain pieces all the time, so the seed was sown at an early age.
ReplyDeleteYes, I will listen to opera.
DeleteI love music and listen to it quite regularly. I do like classic rock but I'm open to just about anything when it appeals to me. I'm a little behind in today's music but not too much. My daughters, especially the younger one, introduced me to a lot of good songs that are popular with them. But now that both girls are not living here anymore, I'm sure I'll fall way behind!
ReplyDeleteI listen to clasic rock when I'm walking sometimes. The beat keeps me going.
ReplyDeleteI have always loved folk music and have a lot of the old stuff on my iPod. I don't really listen to music radio much anymore, and really am not into today's music. I do, however, like to sing along to old favorites.
I only listen to rock and rool the oldies from the 50's and 60's and some early 1970 stuff. I don't play any instruments anymore, I used to play Trumpet in the Junior High Band and French Horn in Orchestra...I am pretty much tone deaf so my band playing lacked a good sound:)
ReplyDeleteHi Red, I like listening to music shows on radio, such as Randy's Vinyl Tap. Thanks for the heads up on that one. By the way, if interested, you can listen to some of his older shows at this link ... http://www.cbc.ca/vinyltap/episodes/
ReplyDeleteThere is always music playing in our home, just about 24x7. The types vary and some days it's country, classical, rock & roll, jazz, easy listening. Night time music is always instrumentals. We have a collection of CDs and also subscribe to Pandora internet radio. It's a very modest investment and we really enjoy the variety.
ReplyDeleteI like music very much. My mother has music going constantly when she's cooking and used to sing all day when she was younger. My husband likes certain music, but he prefers silence so I don't listen as much as I used to.
