So I finally found an old top dishwasher rack at the Habitat for Humanity store. The rollers looked similar to mine and they said take the rack if it works okay and if it doesn't throw the rack away. The rollers did look much like mine in size and shape.
So I took one roller off. Now dishwashers they make these days are crap but try taking the thing apart.
When I put the new roller beside the old roller I thought there would be nothing to it. Wrong! I found the roller was too thick so I had to grind it down more than half. The hole for the shaft was too small so some reaming out took place. Then the screw that attaches the roller caught on the railing. So grind out a bit so the screw is inset.
And there you have it . A lot of work to alter a roller to make it fit.
And away goes my dish washer.
Now there are only two of us so we don't have a big pile of dishes. I do all the dishes. So around here it wouldn't be disaster if I didn't have dishwasher.

DeleteIt's an old relic, so I'm glad you got it working again. I am partial to old relics continuing on for another day. :-)
ReplyDeleteI think we have to do better at keeping appliances running. We're made to think thing are complicated and to leave them alone. We give up too soon.
DeleteWell, let's hear it for ingenuity! I'm impressed you went to all that trouble. I probably wouldn't have thrown out a working dishwasher, but I doubt I could have made that roller work!

DeleteStill, I've always thought that the very best thing about a dishwasher is not just that it washes the dishes, but it gives you somewhere to hide the dirty ones.

ReplyDeleteI don't mind hand washing dishes. I wash all pots and pans as well as stuff that's not to go in the dishwasher.
DeleteWhat's with all you people who like to wash dishes by hand. Not me. Give me a dishwasher. As Marty says, a quick hiding place for dirty dishes. It would have been a shame though to have tossed a dishwasher over one little roller.

ReplyDeleteHand washing depends on how many dishes you have to wash. for one person, I would definitely hand wash. I hate stinky dishes sitting in a dishwasher until the dishwasher is full.

DeleteThat's called putting the elbow grease to it! I have a perfectly good dishwasher, but I wash everything by hand now..more relaxing, less noisy and less electricity and water used. Win-win all around. Plus- washing my hands four times a day helps keep the colds and flu bugs away.

DeleteYour practical problem solving skills are impressive Red. Just think - you could have been a dishwasher repair man instead of a teacher. You would probably have been a lot richer as society seems to value the repair of household appliances more than the education of children.

DeleteYep, been there, done that. After all the adjustments I sometimes can't believe that it finally works out. I ended up replacing a whole kitchen drain works not knowing what I was doing. The old pipes had rusted out inside and clogged things up. I kept reworking traps, reworking connections and put in an new pipe. The old pipe still hangs down there in the crawl space as a memorial to the old. It felt like I was patching and fixing all the way to the end and now the water rushes down the drain like a torrent.
