A couple of months ago we saw a terrific deal for turkeys. It was one of those deals you couldn't pass up. There were three prices for the general weights of turkeys. The birds were completely enclosed with plastic and there was no weight on the label.
I had always said never buy meat that you can't see.
The Micro Manager thought we could have a couple of meals and what was left could be chopped up to use for casseroles. Good idea! We both like roast turkey. This way two of us enjoy a whole turkey.
So the plan was to have the turkey on Sunday. Saturday we didn't get the turkey out early enough to ensure complete thawing. We had visions of a roast turkey dinner at midnight. However, the old bird was thawed in time. With no weight on the label we had to weigh the bird. It turned out to be 14 lbs which was bigger than we had thought.
Somewhere along the line there was a miscalculation and the bird was overdone. Oh yes, the skin could not be eaten and some of the outside meat was too crispy for consumption.
However, the roast bird was more than edible except for being somewhat tasteless.
Then take all the meat off the carcass to go in those casseroles. What a job!
So after we finished this job we said, "What were we thinking?" We hadn't roasted a whole turkey for thirty years when the kids were still at home.
I think we learned a lesson. We bit off more than we could chew.
LOL, good title for your post. I'm sorry the turkey was much larger than you needed. Personally I buy smaller and smaller turkeys these days and that seems to work fine but no matter how much I try to make more than enough stuffing to have leftovers, it doesn't seem to stretch as far.
ReplyDeleteEven the smallest turkeys ar too much for us.
DeleteIt takes a couple of turkeys to buy a turkey they don't really want! Gobble-gobble!
ReplyDeleteYou hit the nail on the head ...the two turkeys' heads.
DeleteThe older the crazier, is a saying here... fun story!
ReplyDeleteThere are many similar sayings to yours and in some ways very true.
DeleteOh, goodness! I know whereof you speak! Happy casseroles!
ReplyDeleteI hope tga casseroles are better than the bird.
DeleteHa ha, good lesson learned. I will think of this next time we go to Costco (where we always bite off more than we can chew).
ReplyDeleteYes, never a whole turkey again.
DeleteThat's quite a lot of turkey for two, that's for sure! I'm glad you were going to use most of it for casseroles if it wasn't very tasty. :-)
ReplyDeleteNever again...even if they're given away.
DeleteOh, but turkey sounds so good...I can see why you bought them!
ReplyDeleteI like turkey but only for two days.
DeleteIt's hard to tell if an on-sale meat will be good or less than good - I've had both happen. Same with produce, too. I am more wary of sales than I used to be!
ReplyDeleteThere's a wide variety in quality when it comes to produce.
DeleteThere is way too much on one, I always look for eager eaters. When I harvest them I can split them in quarters of halves, or just fillet them
ReplyDeleteStores won't cut turkeys in parts anymore. something about bone sawdust!
DeleteGood things come in small packages.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting Hiawatha House.
DeleteOh no, too bad about the over cooking...hope you have better luck next time:)
ReplyDeleteOur oven temperature is off so it gets to be a guessing game.
DeleteI don't mind turkey for a sandwich, but I'm indifferent to eating it at Thanksgiving. It takes so bloody long to finish!
ReplyDeleteI love a turkey sandwich and turkey salad. Hot roast turkey is fine but cold turkey for one day and no more.
DeleteMy mother used to dice the leftover turkey meat and bake it into dinner pies for freezing.
DeleteWhat were you thinking. Ha.ha.
ReplyDeleteSid and I have done that.
My daughter came down to visit us. She made meals to no end.
We had to call our best friends to help us eat casseroles, desserts.
The thought was nice me having surgery. Yet I am not fat Carol Ann. My third week into after Surgery. Doing great. Have had my staples out . Walking with now 4 wheeler. Look out Red. I will run you over. Had a good laugh of you and Wife. Good laugh makes a good medicine. Hugs Red and Wife.
Good to hear that you are recuperating well. Support is needed when seniors have health challenges.
DeleteOh, that's too bad. But at least you did get some good eating in!
ReplyDeleteKinda sounds like one of those Thanksgiving dinner disaster movies.
ReplyDeleteBut look at it this way -- at least you've got lots of pre-cooked meals now! Turkey sandwiches! Turkey casserole! I would never think of buying a whole turkey for just Dave and me. That definitely sounds like a commitment!
ReplyDeletePoultry no longer tastes like it should. All that terrible diet with no bugs I thnk.
ReplyDeleteThe devil is in the details. Unfortunately some details were missing on your bargain purchase.... been there don that. :)
ReplyDeleteDon't you just hate when things turns out like that. First overcooked, and then too much turkey. I always dread finding something to do with all the leftover turkey at Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteOuch! That's too bad. I love turkey left overs. What a shame the bird was overdone.
ReplyDeleteI love everything turkey especially leftovers. Your story had me laughing, it always good to laugh at ourselves when something doesn't work out the way we thought it might.
