As you may know I am a birder. You also may know that I lead a birdwatching group every Saturday morning. Then I can remind you that it's Canada's 150th birthday this year. The birthday is July 1.
Now when some random chaotic thinker like me puts these things together I can come up with some odd ball ideas. So a few months ago I told you that I had a project for people to find 150 bird species in this region for the celebration of Canada's birthday. The area was defined by the Central Alberta Bird Trail map https://birdingtrailsalberta.com/. If you're interested google and you will find a down loadable map. You will also find reported species that have been observed in the area.
Well, happy surprise. Our 150th bird was reported May 20.
When I started the project I had no idea how long it would take. To finish in 5 months was a pleasant surprise. There are many very keen birders in the area and they got in the swing of things and reported everything they saw. I had to check to see that the species hadn't already been reported and then record date, location and reporter. I met some new birders on line and I'm sure they will show up in some of our groups.
Now we will continue counting species until the end of 2017.
All photos gleefully stolen from the Red Deer Naturalist's face book page.
Congratulations on reaching your goal already!
ReplyDeleteThanks. It was fun to see so many birders participate.
DeleteWow that's pretty good to id and record 150 bird species and to do it well under a year. It will be interesting to see how many you get in the year.
ReplyDeleteThe second half of the year will be a bigger challenge as we've seen most of the residents and most of the migrators. We'll just have to see what happens.
DeleteWell done your idea made it a succes.
ReplyDeleteIt was a pleasant surprise as to how well thing went.
DeleteCongratulations! A fine project.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteCongratulations on meeting your goal, and with time to spare! Great idea, Red, for the birthday party. And nice stolen pictures! I like the first one the most. :-)
ReplyDeleteWe have an RDRN facebook page and people's photos are saved.
DeleteYour random idea has given other ornithologists a lot of pleasure. Congratulations Red!...I have another idea for celebrating Canada's big birthday. Put The Micro Manager in the car and zoom down the highway to Edmonton - achieving a speed of 150mph.
ReplyDeleteYou don't know what kind of hornet's nest you're stirring up. I'm still hearing about the last speeding ticket and that was 41 kph!
DeleteI love that owl shot! What a great picture.
ReplyDeleteOne of our facebook members put that on.
DeleteWow, that is wonderful. Congratulations! What a great capture with that beautiful owl.
ReplyDeleteOne of the RDRN facebook friends put the owl photo on.
DeleteBravo on reaching the goal, Red!
ReplyDeleteThanks . There were a lot of keeners.
DeleteJust spotted a Lazuli Bunting the other day, a rare one for my area
ReplyDeleteAwesome.. They are seen here but rarely.
DeleteCongratulations on getting to 150 so quickly! What a great project. I love that you "gleefully" lifted the photos :) I'm assuming Red Deer Naturalist wouldn't mind and that's why you stole them with impunity :D
ReplyDeleteWe have an RDRN facebook page and friends put pictures on.
DeleteThat's great and in good time. Loved the bird pics, especially that first one.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations of meeting your goal! Early! I think it's an excellent way to honor Canada's birthdays.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun and fabulous project! Congratulations on meeting your goal!
