Yesterday I briefly met a former student and colleague who reads my blog and he jokingly said, "Are you going to change your blog into a book? "
Well the answer to that is amazingly simple. "No!"
After I got home I started to think about something.
I had spent a good part of my summer redoing my will. I had done my power of attorney and made my living will. That's right. Everything has been arranged.
So yesterday that question suddenly entered my head, "What will happen to my blog?"
You don't have to spend very much time and you can find dozens of abandoned blogs. Somebody wrote half a dozen posts and then gave up. These blogs are just sitting there.
My blog has over 1300 posts and there should be more to come. What do I do with it? Well not make it into a book. If I suddenly stop blogging, do I just abandon the project? If it's left are there risks? Can some hacker just take over my blog? Could a hacker find something valuable with my blog? Is there a risk in just abandoning the blog? Do I actually own the blog and material?
I know that a blog can be deleted. But will I be fast enough to carry out this procedure? I might wonder about spending all this time saying things, if it's not worthwhile to keep it?
So am I over reacting? What do you plan to do? What have you heard about end of blog life?
Yes I think you are over reacting. Make sure your password is long and difficult to figure out. That way no one can take it over. I plan to just leave mine as it is...when ever I am done so is it:)
ReplyDeleteI wanted to hear some discussion on the topic. Thanks!
Delete...interesting guesses, but when I'm gone that will be it.
ReplyDeleteThat's usually me but this one got me thinking.
DeleteHello, I do not feel like I have anything on my blog worth the hacking. If they want more power to them. You can have a family member or good friend take over your blog, at least give them your password. I will leave mine. Happy Monday, enjoy your day and new week ahead.
ReplyDeleteI guess there are many suitable procedures. You can leave somebody as an administrator and then the have full control.
DeleteI think it a fair question. My ex-husband died suddenly, and his name kept popping up on Facebook. It was creepy. They didn't know his password, and I had to block him.
ReplyDeleteI know when some bloggers die, a friend might post a comment stating that. I will leave it up to my kids to decide.
Instructions would have to be left so that it happens.
DeleteAS a former librarian and aware that the Library of Congress has worked at digitizing historic diaries and war letters, etc. I think many blogs could be valuable to future historians and researchers and storing these blogs will not take up much room as we develop more powerful servers. I never thought about hackers, though.
ReplyDeleteLike you I can see that there would be posts that would be valuable in how they relate to something.
DeleteI have thought about this as well. There are several blogs that I still have bookmarked even though I know the bloggere has long since passed on. A few years ago some website offered to convert blogs into a PDF file. I have that, but there are now a few years to add to it, and I don't think that site is still up. I think I'd like the blog to continue to exist, but I would like to turn comments off!
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how quickly comments cease when a blog is left.
DeleteMemories will live on and on
ReplyDeleteThat's what happens with the internet.
DeleteTabor's comment is something to think about.
ReplyDeleteI keep thinking I should give my password to one of my family (preferably a tech oriented one) and ask them to do a final post if something happens to me, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Denial! la la la
It seems like we have quite a few options.
DeleteI plan on leaving my blog the way it is, online. I don't care what happens to it, I'll be gone off the planet.
ReplyDeleteThat's usually the way I look at things. However the blog is different than other possessions we have.
DeleteA couple of bloggers I've known have died and a note was placed in their blogs by a relative.
ReplyDeleteI know that some people who have closed a blog have later had it hijacked by spammers.
A final post would be positive.
DeleteI hadn't thought about it. I guess I would just give my password to my survivor and let them decide.
ReplyDeleteYou can also make someone an administrator.
DeleteBlogs which use blogger are actually the property of Google so none of our blogs are safe. Google can use the content or delete at will. I don't think they will do that but if you want your thoughts to remain you are obliged to either print it all or transfer to a domain you pay for and then the payments must be kept up or someone will end up taking your domain to sell shoes or something
ReplyDeleteall blogger blogs are actually owned by google so google can use your content or delete or anything they feel like. I don't think they would do those things but it'sworth knowing that if you want to be sure of the way your blog will be treated you have to either get a hard copy or transfer it to a domain name you own and then you have to continue the payments or else your blog will turn into a site selling shoes or whatnot.....
ReplyDeleteIt is a very good question Red. We should all talk about this with our nearest and dearest. Perhaps The Micro Manager could take over your blog and tell us THE TRUTH about her beloved husband.
ReplyDeleteLike some others have commented, I too have followed bloggers who have died. In at least one case, a family member posted afterwards to let followers know their relative had died. I have never returned to the blog to learn if it had been removed. You posed an interesting question, Red. Grenville and myself are co-administrators so hopefully one of us would continue or do a final post.
ReplyDeleteI find your blog very interesting. Perhaps you can leave written instructions that might come in handy, especially with your kids. Maybe they'll want to download your blog and save what you've written.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very good question. I assume the blog will simply remain online in perpetuity. Facebook will apparently "archive" the page of a dead person so that it is still visible, but can't be altered or added to. I wonder if Blogger can do something similar? (I tried to Google this and didn't come up with much.)
ReplyDeletePersonally, I sort of feel the same way Bug does. I intend to leave my blog online, and if it gets hacked, oh well. I'm not here to mind. Nothing lasts forever, right?
Definitely food for thought here. I'll have to figure this out myself.
ReplyDeleteMy New Zealand blog is being turned into books slowly and surely. My blogs are downloaded so cane be kept if needed. However my son will have all the information and knows my wishes. At least if anything happens to me suddenly no one should be kept wondering what on earth happened to me.
ReplyDeleteI’ve been blogging for 10 years now. Hmmm... I think it will be 11next month. That’s a lot of posts. I haven’t even thought about what to do with it. Now you have me thinking. It’s great that you’ve got your will and such done. That’s very important.
