MY SNOW IS ALMOST GONE

I've had a bit of a struggle with the blog lately. I've been very busy. Topics come to my head and by the time I get to pencil and paper the topic is gone.

However , today I have something to write about that was planned for me by somebody else.

I want to tell you that my winter snow is about 90% gone. There are only snow banks on the north side of something or in a very sheltered spot.

So I went out to get some photos of my gone snow.

Well, I found some other things and some things I didn't find quite soon enough.

I noticed  that a large tree trunk had fallen and the the bark was stripped off the branches close to the ground. I had to check this out. From a distance I thought it would have been a porcupine. When I got there I discovered that it had been deer that had chewed the bark off and nipped all the end twigs. Most nights deer had gone through my yard so I was not surprised by the evidence.

Now I was so interested in the evidence of the trees being chewed that I missed seeing the larger bulk if the evidence. Since the deer had stayed in this area most of the winter they had left a massive amount of droppings. I didn't see the droppings quite soon enough. They were in a consistency where they mushed and really stuck to my shoes!

So you see the deer gave me my topic today.

  3. At least they're vegetarians, Red! It's the meat-eaters' leavings that you really don't want to step in :) (I do sympathize, especially as our back yard is full of it too)

  9. We love our deer poop. It really helps the lawn. Well, weeds!
I would have thought porcupines, too.
Our snow is just about done. I hope. That was a torrent on the weekend, 42 mm of rain, followed by 2 cm of snow.

    2. Hi Red, My daily walk has become a habit, just as you suggested it would. And, I found out today that you were right again about walking in the rain. It's no problem and not a reason to stay home. I loved the comment you left about getting out early for a walk. Yes, it is tough at the start, but, after you get the habit, it is no problem. I just wanted to also say thanks for your comments that you have been leaving me every day. I am looking forward to your walks and photos as we move further into Spring.

  20. Those are the little surprises we find after the snow is gone! I have a feeling our property will be full of little droppings left by all the rabbits that have been visiting all winter :)

  21. Well, i still think it’s lovely you have deer sleeping in your yard and fertilizing your landscape. You will just have to be more observant when you walk about! Our dog has been known to roll in deer droppings and there isnt much of anything stinkier.

  22. Good to read and see that the snow is almost gone in your area, Red. But, now you certainly "discovered" another problem.

  23. Pretty much the same story here in Minnesnowda. Though with my neighbors illegally feeding the culprits I counted on one occasion a herd of about forty passing through my back yard. They have a penchant for white cedar along with their normal diet of corn...:)

  24. Glad your snow has almost disappeared. Isn't it amazing what the snow melt uncovers? We should go on a treasure hunt but oh dear/deer, that's not the treasure I would enjoy finding :)
