SPRING IS READY TO SPRING HERE

Spring is ready to pounce here. Our snow disappeared in early April. We've had decent temperatures with highs around 10 C ( 48 F) and lows with light frosts. Plants...yes plants...we have some. Plants have been pretty well dormant.

This week I've noticed a change. Plants are starting to respond . Leaf buds have been developing. Some perennials have started. My violets beside the house are almost in bloom. Can you believe it?

From now on things happen very quickly. we get very long days so the plants get many hours of sunlight and develop rapidly.

Today the sun rose at 6:18 and sets at 8:48 for 14 hours and 30 minutes of sunshine. Our evenings are long.

Now today slowed things down as there was a nasty cold wind with a temperature of 7 C. the forecast for the next few days is cool and cloudy so plants will veg for a few days.

So just when everybody is starting to think of summer I thought I'd remind you that some of us are enjoying spring. So our trees have some big fat leave buds and there are tinges of green grass.

  1. I'm so happy to hear you finally have Spring! Enjoy it, for after a long winter you have earned some beautiful Spring days. You really do have a lot of hours of daylight there already. We won't be getting that much daylight in one day for a while here.

  3. Spring has sprung here in Southern California. I’ve been following live cam of Bald Eagle eggs hatching and have eaglets now. The name “Red” caught my eye on Oddball Observations (we’re a redhead family), then your profile mentioned a one-room schoolhouse — thought of my Mom’s tales of teaching in one in her youth in U.S. Great Lakes state a century or so ago — so thought I’d stop by. Greetings to you and your wife.

    1. Thanks for visiting Hiawatha House. Look up Ellis Bird farm and they have a camera on an owl nest.

    1. We're getting a cool spell so those buds will sit there until warm weather returns.

  6. I'm so glad spring has arrived in your neck of the woods. You are right about things happening fast now. Once the buds begin opening, really is happens too quickly. Wish spring could stay longer.

  9. Our lilacs are just beginning to bud! What a contrast to your area, Red. But it is indeed spring, even in your neck of the woods. :-)

    1. Well, won't be long and the lilacs will bloom but tomorrow we will get a major snowstorm.

  11. We're around the same stage here. What snow remains is that which is in the shade most of the time. The rivers are high, however.

  15. It's amazing how nature compensates for short seasons by making them so intense! Our spring is very slow compared to yours, even though our daylight hours at the moment are almost the same. Your days will get longer quickly, while ours will be much slower, I think. Our lilacs won't be out until June!

  17. Hi Red, Your sunrise and sunset times are not that much different than Seattle. Your daylight is a bit longer, I think due to Red Deer being a little more north in latitude. Those are some big buds on the lilac. I’m wondering who that white fence belongs to in the last pic ... is that your backyard behind the fence? I get a kick out of Yorkshire’s comments. I did not know there is a prison there. Just learned something new ... looked it up and see that it is called a “Remand Centre”. Canada is way ahead of us when it comes to naming things.

    1. That's my fence built by my daughter and I. Yes my kingdom is behind the fence. We do have a remand center which is far too small. We've had a huge population growth since it was built.

  18. Spring is my favourite season of the year, so I hope it sticks around for a long time. There are tulips rising from the ground. We should be seeing flowers any day now!

  20. All of this is so foreign to me! The only reason we lose the green is if we are in drought and even then there will be hardy trees and shrubs providing colour. I only see a 14 hour day in the height of summer and i have never seen snow where I live. (I have seen snow once in my life, on holiday)
