Spring is ready to pounce here. Our snow disappeared in early April. We've had decent temperatures with highs around 10 C ( 48 F) and lows with light frosts. Plants...yes plants...we have some. Plants have been pretty well dormant.
This week I've noticed a change. Plants are starting to respond . Leaf buds have been developing. Some perennials have started. My violets beside the house are almost in bloom. Can you believe it?
From now on things happen very quickly. we get very long days so the plants get many hours of sunlight and develop rapidly.
Today the sun rose at 6:18 and sets at 8:48 for 14 hours and 30 minutes of sunshine. Our evenings are long.
Now today slowed things down as there was a nasty cold wind with a temperature of 7 C. the forecast for the next few days is cool and cloudy so plants will veg for a few days.
So just when everybody is starting to think of summer I thought I'd remind you that some of us are enjoying spring. So our trees have some big fat leave buds and there are tinges of green grass.

I'm so happy to hear you finally have Spring! Enjoy it, for after a long winter you have earned some beautiful Spring days. You really do have a lot of hours of daylight there already. We won't be getting that much daylight in one day for a while here.
ReplyDeleteI hate to tell you that our forecast for tomorrow is for snow!
DeleteYour delayed spring is all the more precious when it arrives.
ReplyDeleteYes , the leaves common out is a highlight.
DeleteSpring has sprung here in Southern California. I’ve been following live cam of Bald Eagle eggs hatching and have eaglets now. The name “Red” caught my eye on Oddball Observations (we’re a redhead family), then your profile mentioned a one-room schoolhouse — thought of my Mom’s tales of teaching in one in her youth in U.S. Great Lakes state a century or so ago — so thought I’d stop by. Greetings to you and your wife.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting Hiawatha House. Look up Ellis Bird farm and they have a camera on an owl nest.
DeleteIt is always a relief to see the sun and feel the warmth again after the winter.
ReplyDeleteWe get the sunlight but the temps take a while to warm me up.
DeleteHello, Happy Spring. It is nice to see the buds and plant activity. Happy Thursday, enjoy your day! Have a great weekend ahead!
ReplyDeleteWe're getting a cool spell so those buds will sit there until warm weather returns.
DeleteI'm so glad spring has arrived in your neck of the woods. You are right about things happening fast now. Once the buds begin opening, really is happens too quickly. Wish spring could stay longer.
ReplyDeleteEverybody has a favorite season and yours is spring.
DeleteSo glad spring is creeping up your way. Those big fat buds look so ready to pop. Maybe one or two today?
ReplyDeleteWe are about to get 4 or 5 days of cool weather so they will just sit there.
DeleteWe are having similar problems. A lot pf plants are well ahead of themselves and the along comes a bitter Northerly gale.
ReplyDeleteStuff is right ready to start with a few more days of warm weather.
DeleteOur lilacs are just beginning to bud! What a contrast to your area, Red. But it is indeed spring, even in your neck of the woods. :-)
ReplyDeleteWell, won't be long and the lilacs will bloom but tomorrow we will get a major snowstorm.
DeleteDoes The Canadian government send the country's toughest prisoners to Red Deer? Spring comes so late.
ReplyDeleteNo such luck. we get all the losers who go in and out all the time!
DeleteWe're around the same stage here. What snow remains is that which is in the shade most of the time. The rivers are high, however.
ReplyDeleteOur runoff is over and the rivers are down.
DeleteAh spring! Such a bright joy to see.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of spring is to see the new leaves.
DeleteGlad you're catching up ... enjoy!
ReplyDeleteIt's a different kind of growing season.
DeleteFinally spring has reached you. Enjoy it and watch everything grow.
ReplyDeleteI do like plants so I will be happy.
DeleteIt's amazing how nature compensates for short seasons by making them so intense! Our spring is very slow compared to yours, even though our daylight hours at the moment are almost the same. Your days will get longer quickly, while ours will be much slower, I think. Our lilacs won't be out until June!
ReplyDeleteman has taken advantage of the seasons to develop adaptable plants.
DeleteGood to hear that spring has sprung in your part of the world Red. Enjoy :)
ReplyDeleteYes, and maybe you'll see the odd photo of flowers.
DeleteHi Red, Your sunrise and sunset times are not that much different than Seattle. Your daylight is a bit longer, I think due to Red Deer being a little more north in latitude. Those are some big buds on the lilac. I’m wondering who that white fence belongs to in the last pic ... is that your backyard behind the fence? I get a kick out of Yorkshire’s comments. I did not know there is a prison there. Just learned something new ... looked it up and see that it is called a “Remand Centre”. Canada is way ahead of us when it comes to naming things.
ReplyDeleteThat's my fence built by my daughter and I. Yes my kingdom is behind the fence. We do have a remand center which is far too small. We've had a huge population growth since it was built.
DeleteSpring is my favourite season of the year, so I hope it sticks around for a long time. There are tulips rising from the ground. We should be seeing flowers any day now!
ReplyDeleteIt's surprising how much development takes place in a day.
DeleteYour neighborhood looks so tidy!
ReplyDeleteThanks. It is tidy in most places.
DeleteAll of this is so foreign to me! The only reason we lose the green is if we are in drought and even then there will be hardy trees and shrubs providing colour. I only see a 14 hour day in the height of summer and i have never seen snow where I live. (I have seen snow once in my life, on holiday)
ReplyDeletethese are truly delightful images dear Red :)
ReplyDeleteso glad spring is overwhelming you with grace and cheerfulness
hope you be surrounded by so many blooms soon my friend!
