SPRING IS STILL ON THE WAY

Here are a few photos to show that spring is still on the way. We've had two weeks of cool weather...highs of around 10 C (50 F) or less. We also had light frosts many nights. Plants develop very slowly under these conditions. The last two days we've had highs of 20 C (70 F). Things start to move quickly. Very few tree species have leafed out.

The Nanking cherry is almost finished blooming

The peony has grown about a foot in two days

The bleeding heart has some early blooms
These two photos show the same tree almost 2 months apart.

  1. It's so wonderful when Spring arrives and the blossoms and growth start. One thing I love about northern BC and Alberta is that even though the growing season starts late, everything just mushrooms overnight once the growth starts. Enjoy!

  3. I’m in northern Ontario and I would say your spring and ours are very much the same! Today it’s suppose to reach 20, Celsius, then a cool down again, beautiful healthy looking peonies and bleeding hearts, ours are not as high as yours, so I think we might be a bit behind, not as far along. The comparison photo speaks volumes as to how far we’ve come. It was such a long winter!

  4. Your springtime is so far behind ours, Red. I love that last picture, is that a redwing blackbird? :-)

  6. Spring is slow in your area. We planted some of our vegetables in pots and they are doing good. It was warm the last two weeks but now it's going to be cooler.
    Have a nice day!

  7. Hi Red, You sure have some nice big trees there. That last tree ... I hope you will give us another pic when it has fully leafed out. It looks pretty great even without leaves. Have a good weekend!

    1. I quite often take a photo of this tree. It's a poplar and grows about 60 ft tall. It has a very large spread of branches. You don't want to put this one in your yard.

  8. Looks like spring is progressing in your neck of the woods. Is it late this year as it is in so much of the northern US?

  14. I'm so happy spring is finally coming your way. Your cherry tree is gorgeous! In Chicago we used to joke that spring and fall were just 2 weeks long so you have to go out and enjoy it while you can.

  17. It all depends on where you are ... we're heading out west, looking at 35 degrees in Utah and the next day 100 degrees in Arizona!

  18. Our spring has been slow, too, and the trees are struggling to put out leaves. A few warm days and they'll be popping out everywhere, though! Your peony is way ahead of ours.

  19. I hope Spring is still on the way. I woke this morning to Baltic winds and the rain so heavy I can't see across the valley as I type.

  21. I'm impressed you can have peonies, as cold as it gets up there. I mean, I know they're underground at that time of year, but still...

  22. this is joy that spring is finally around dear Red!

your images show though slow but growth of life in absence of snow finally :)

difference of two months shows less progress though still hope that spring will embrace the surroundings completely

  23. I smiled when I read that spring had finally arrived in your area, Red. We are currently on a southern road trip and the states we’re touring are in a heat wave with 90s and above. We could sure use some of those cooler temps for a day or so.
