I USUALLY DON'T WRITE ABOUT THIS TOPIC

I usually don't write about personal health issues. It's a topic that can deteriorate into a never ending list of aches and pains.

Well, this one's different. Oh ya! That's what they all say.

Since last September I've been living with a torn rotator cuff.  It hasn't been funny. It just kept getting worse. The pain was acute. Night was the worst. December to April were brutal. Things improved from May and June. I kept getting stiffer to the point that I had difficulty putting on a coat.

I saw my doc in Nov and he said go to the Internet and find stretching exercises. He also ordered an ultrasound. The ultra sound showed  bursitis, tendinitis, arthritis and a tear.

I went to physio in Jan.,  Feb and didn't get any results.

Finally, my doc suggested  a cortisone shot.

Well yesterday I had that shot. What a difference! I didn't realize that the pain had taken so much energy away. Energy had been stolen.  I was back to my normal self. Normal energy. I was beginning to think that I had become a very old man!!!

Now I'm hoping that I'm not speaking too soon. I hope that this lasts for a while. At least until I get my fence built.

  1. I'm so glad the cortisone shot helped, Red, but please don't overdo. I found physical therapy did help though. Fingers crossed that you will continue to heal well.

    1. They said my odds were good as the bursitis is in a small spot. They said I can do everything as long as it doesn't hurt.

  2. A friend of mine who lives in South Dakota had her’s repaired a couple of months. She lived with it for three years and just finally had it done.

    1. They're reluctant to do surgery. It's a long recovery period.

  3. I am so glad to hear the shot helped you! I hope it lasts a long time for you. I thought they usually did surgery for torn rotator cuffs but if this works that's great. I've been dealing with a torn meniscus in my knee and the pain finally got to the point that I'm going to have surgery. Pain does slow us down more than we realize.

  6. That's great news! I know how much constant pain can be debilitating. And thanks for the update on the issue, Red. I hope it stays for awhile. You can always get another shot, right? :-)

  9. I think you were serious about the fence, so I would urge you to check with your doctor before tackling it. The cortisone shot doesn't fix the damage, it just reduces the inflammation and pain. You don't want to make the injury worse. My father had a similar injury and this was my understanding of the treatment at least.

And yes, pain does really make us feel - and act - old. It's no fun.

  15. I had a cortisone shot in my arthritic knee, and it lasted a year. Had a second in May. So far, so good. Good luck with yours. And, yes, physical therapy and light exercise work too ...

  16. Oh, good. I'm glad the shot has made a difference. But take it easy building that fence!

  17. Glad that cortisone shot worked so well. I know people who have had similar shots usually for painful knees and it has seemed to help them as well. Hope the fence building doesn't undo any of the good results like others have commented.
