In the mid 80's our government set up a province wide park system. Much parkland was set aside in our city. Many facilities were built. The one I like best is the trail system . There are many km of paved trails. There are lesser used trails that are gravel. Many of the photos on this blog were taken in this park system.
I rode about 47000 km on these trails over the years.
What I do most now in these parks is bird watch.
Saturday we went to Riverbend. Riverbend is actually a golf course along the river. There is a trail along the river and the course is set back a 100 meters from the river so there is native habitat to walk through. So we see water fowl and boreal species at the same time.
Saturday we saw 15 species of birds and a least weasel.
The highlight was swans . We only have swans during migration. We also saw a great blue heron which is somewhat late to e here.
So we saw: common raven, black-billed magpie, mallard, trumpeter swan, blue jay, buffle head, golden eye, red head, Canada geese, scaup, white breasted nuthatch, boreal chickadee, downy woodpecker, great blue heron, black capped chickadee.
These are the swans visiting us.
That must be wonderful to have a park with such a good trail system. It sounds like your Saturday bird watching was successful! I love all of your pictures and I especially love seeing those beautiful swans.
ReplyDeleteWe go to half a dozen sites out of town as well.
DeleteSwans are such elegant, graceful creatures. I still remember watching them floating on the Rhine River in Germany. We were all mesmerized by them.
ReplyDeleteSwans are exactly as you say.
DeleteHi...I just saw your comment at DJan's blog where you said you returned to birding in August. I am an avid birder along the Texas coast in -USA. Your swan photos are super beautiful and the trail system sounds like a great place to go birding & enjoy nature. My birding photo blog is linked at the top of my personal blog...or if you'd care to visit birds only you can go directly there...

ReplyDeleteGood to hear that the species is doing well.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great outing with wonderful bird sightings. I love the swans, they are so pretty. I believe a few Trumpeter swans have found their way to my state, I saw a few reports this week. Beautiful views of the river. Take care, enjoy your day! Have a great week ahead!
We have some excellent birders which makes thinks more interesting and successful. We have a biologist who' specialty is ornithology.
DeleteNice swans! I wonder if the Queen owns all the swans in Canada, like she does the swans in England?
ReplyDeleteSorry, We cut her out of the swan business!!!
DeleteThose gulls are everywhere. I cannot imagine cycling 47000 kms. You sure enjoyed your bicycling days by the sound of it.
ReplyDeleteThere are only a very few gulls around now. I did between 1000 to 2000 km a summer . Mostly in the 1200 km range.
DeleteBeautiful swans, Red. I'm so happy you saw so many birds. And I hope you have a good week!
ReplyDeleteWe have a biologist with a specialty of ornithology. That helps us to be much more successful.
DeleteI've been trying some bird watching.I bought a monocular to peek at them but I don't often know what kind of bird I am looking at! Still, it is fun to watch them and spot a new one!
ReplyDeleteDownload a bird app. These apps show much more than a photo.
DeleteIt is so lovely there. A beautiful place to bird watch. I love how many species you saw there. Great day for a walk!
ReplyDeleteWe have a biologist with us and he's the reason for our success.
DeleteYou have the best adventures!
ReplyDeleteI cover a lot of territory for my adventures.
DeleteLove the photos of the swans. Beautiful birds indeed.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Swans are very majestic birds.
DeleteOn the Island I see very few of the birds you've mentioned although I can say without fear of contradiction that I've seen hundreds of Canada Geese today.
ReplyDeleteYou probably see many species of gulls that we see.
DeleteWE have a River Bend Golf Course here too, a place where we have walked along the river many times.
ReplyDeleteI could write a book on what I've done on these trails. In the winter the groom cross country ski trails.
DeleteBeautiful shots!
ReplyDeleteThankyou
DeleteThere is a shy heron who visits the pond in my header. I've managed photos of the pond and of the heron, but never in the same frame.
ReplyDeleteYou saw some birds!! Good for you! :)
ReplyDeleteYour time will come. It was a surprise for us to find a heron this late in the year.
ReplyDeleteThe more parks the better. The parks are well used in Canada. I like yours and you've used it a lot over the years.
ReplyDeleteSwans are so beautiful. We used to see them regularly before we moved to the city we live now. It's been years since a ran across any.
ReplyDeleteA lovely area for bird watching. I wish we had swans around here. I would love that! Thanks Red, great post!
