Well, my last post wasn't really a complaint. Just a little whining!
Today I would like to register a formal complaint to those who hate seniors.
I consider myself to be very fortunate as a senior, in that I have very good health. That doesn't mean that I don't have some senior issues.
In the last year I have noticed some vision problems.
Yes, if you see an old guy on his hands and knees, trying to look at a price tag, that will be me! Yes, the price tag is just above my toes. I can back up to the other side of the aisle to get a better angle but that doesn't help.
Now you have to read price tags very carefully. So sale price is large and in color. It's a super good price. But you have to see that to get the super price you have to buy two. Who wants two containers of Beef in a mug?
The next problem is the price tag on the top shelf. The price tags automatically angle upward. So unless you're seven feet tall, all you see its the bottom of the price tag. While I'm at this one I feel sorry for shorter people who cannot reach anything on the top shelf. I have had to step on the bottom shelf to reach something on the top shelf.
After that, much of the information on the price tag is in very small printing. Shall I embarrass the Micro Manager and not only kneel on the floor but bring out my magnifying glass?
So while our grocery stores may have some things for the convenience of shoppers , they have some glaring challenges for people.
Now on the other hand, grocery stores have things slanted to their advantage. They don't want you to see that you have to buy two to get the low price. If you buy one they make a dump truck more money because the one price is much higher.
So there should be much more consideration given to seniors when it comes to making things easier.
What improvements would you like to see?
I'd like to see the grocery stores get rid of those high top shelves because I am one of those shorter people! (5'1")
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to be very short to not be able to reach top shelves.
DeleteThe main improvement I would like to see is a change in the law so that seniors are required to stay at home. They tend to block the aisles in supermarkets and take too long getting their wallets and purses out. Staying safe at home is the way forward for seniors who can then order the things they need online. Oh, I just remembered, I'm a senior too. Of course the new law would not apply to me.
ReplyDeleteYou made some keen observations of seniors or maybe you're giving good description of your self!
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Red, the locations of the price tags could be in a better place. Maybe larger in size. Take care, have a great weekend! Happy Easter!
Some how or other , I don't think they're listening to us.
DeleteBigger sell by and use by dates. They're often minute and hard to find and read. We have them on almost all foodstuffs in the UK. Politicians talk of scrapping them (and some voters are mug enough to agree with them). They think it would be good for business if people could sell stuff that's weeks old. I'm all for them.
ReplyDeleteBest before dates were put in for a very good reason.
DeleteI would LOVE to see grocery stores STOP rearranging their shelves. I spend all this time looking and looking for dishsoap, only to discover that dishsoap is now in a different aisle. Mind you, all the other cleaners are in the self same place...just the dishsoap's been moved. GAAAAH! I told the girl (jokingly), "You are not allowed to move stuff." She told me to brace myself, that they were shutting down for 3 weeks to completely rearrange the store. The stuff of nightmares, I tell you.
ReplyDeleteThe big stores have thousands of different products so it gets tough to find anything.
DeleteI don't love the 'buy two' deals, and I think that I have even see three.
ReplyDeleteYou have seen three at Costco.
DeleteI am short and getting shorter in my old age. I have done that trick of stepping on the bottom shelf just to reach something up high. I can't think of anything to whine about right this moment.
ReplyDeleteYes, that effort is a little risky.
DeleteMost stores when something is on sale it will also be noted in the flyer at the entrance.
ReplyDeleteYes, they all have flyers at the entry.
DeleteI hate the top shelf...especially when it has not been restocked anfd items are just out of reach...I once asked a grocery store manager to put a grabber or a ladder in each aisle! I have been known to ask really tall guys for help...since store employees are hard to find..."Excuse me sir you are SO tall and I am so short could you reach that for me" usually works. I have gotten on my hands and knees to get something out of reach on the bottom shelf.
ReplyDeleteI don't like stuff piles in aisles so I usually kick it out of the way.
DeleteI am thankful to modern technology. Smart phones now have enough resolution that I can take a picture of just about anything, zoom into the picture and read what needs to be read... without resorting to kneeling or magnifying glasses.
ReplyDeleteI think the biggest improvements for grocery stores would be to enforce the "Express Lane" limits, don't stand their chatting with the cashier/customer when there are people waiting behind you, and force everyone to pay with credit card. The alternative to those is to just let me come in 15 minutes before the store opens so I don't have to deal with those types of people.
Some of us poor folks don't have a cell phone!
DeleteReading this made me realize that Roger and I always go shopping together. He gets the stuff on the top shelves and I get the stuff on the lower ones. It takes teamwork these day to get these chores done. I do think that stores could be more accommodating to their shoppers.
ReplyDeleteService seems to have gone some place!
DeleteMove the cheaper brands to mid level, rather than unreachable high up or near the floor. That won’t happen!
ReplyDeleteYou're a realist. You just missed out the word "never".
DeleteThe top shelf is too high and they put the 2-liter bottles of seltzer I want up there. Then they want you to buy 4 of these to get the best price, so I have to reach up 4 times to get those heavy bottles down. I have resorted to looking for a stocker's step-ladder and dragging it through the store so I can climb up myself to get the bottles stuck in the back of that top shelf. Not good planning!
ReplyDeleteThanks to Ed's comment - I will use my phone to help me read the small print in the store!
Some of the stuff we have to do takes time and some of it is risky.
DeleteI hate the multi buy concept. Its misleading. I was very disappointed when my,store adopted it,a few years back.just focus on having the lowest or fantastic flyer prices is the way to go. As to not being able to read bottom or top shelves perhaps talking tags are the way to go ? I wonder how blind people manage their shopping ? I have never thought about this before.
ReplyDeleteWhen mention blind people I don't remember seeing blind people shopping.
DeleteI agree they ought to post prices that are legible. I bet you could bring a lawsuit if you wanted to, alleging discrimination agains the sight-impaired!
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I don't think I want even one "beef in a mug." Whatever that is.
Beef in a mug is like chicken in a mug! Put some in a mug , heat it and you have a good drink. It's also used as a flavor in many soups and stews.
DeleteI hate it when you are looking for an item and it's not on a shelve tag and you're not sure if you have the right item. Sometimes the item prices are not updated on their register computer so you don't get the right price. Very annoying indeed!
ReplyDeleteYes, and many times the tag is either missing or in the wrong place.
DeleteI wouldn't know. I haven't been to a store in over a year!
ReplyDeleteYou're missing one of the pleasures of life!
DeleteI am single shopping for just me so multi-buy offers are my pet hate. Rarely do they apply to me so I tend to refuse the multi-buy and if it really annoys me I then empty the few thing I may have bought and go to the other supermarket.
ReplyDeleteThey are definitely not thinking of the one person household.
DeleteKinda' sounds like my adventures in trying to reach my favorite yogurt, on the top shelf. Seems it is a favorite for others too because often what's left is at the back of the shelf. At least now Tom is shopping with me and he can reach it or step in the bottom shelf. I don't dare do that yet. I also have trouble reading prices on low shelves.
ReplyDeleteThey don't seem to think that customers could have physical issues.
DeleteI cannot disagree with you on this one. My grocery is an old fashioned store, hand written prices, hard to find.
ReplyDeleteMaybe these stores are using too much hi tech stuff .
DeleteI hear you!
ReplyDeleteYa turned up your hearing aid!
Deletewhere i live woman is considered old in her fifty and i think you know that i have been fighting with many crucial health issues already
ReplyDeletewhen it come to weaken eyesight it reminds me my dear late mom who would scold me for reading while lying down ,i cannot not read prescription paper from the packet of medicine anymore ,all i see is black page but not words on it
Hi Red, As I read through this post I kept thinking you are experiencing the same things I am. :-) The thing about the vision ... it's so annoying. Re things on sale ... Sometimes I don't like buy one, get one free. It's not like they are really giving you a free one. What they do is raise the price on the one you have pay for. Go figure. Have a good weekend, Red, and Happy Easter to you and the Micro Manager. John
ReplyDeleteI agree with you completely, Red. The fine print always kills me and I can NEVER reach that top shelf.
ReplyDeleteDang it! I need to remember not to use my iPad for comments anymore. For some reason, it can comment on some people and not others.
ReplyDeleteI did say that I agree with you completely. I can never reach that top shelf and I should bring magnifying glasses for some of the small print. Just kidding. I should wear my glasses.
Government as in wartime to prevent price gouging
ReplyDeleteI haven't had a lot of issues when shopping locally, except my own personal one of forgetting to bring along my reading glasses.
