THAT PRINTER !

You guessed it. I had to have a serious discussion with my printer.

I bought a half decent (not all the bells and whistles) printer about 5 years ago. I do very little printing. The printer also has a scanner and I do much less scanning than printing.

I will admit now that I was extremely challenged when I set the printer up. Some nice people at Brother guided me through the process.

Somebody in my house said that they didn't like all the cords with the computer. So the said somebody suggested that the printer be connected to the computer  by Wi fi. Now connecting computer and printer by Wi fi was another epic challenge

Once in a while Wi fi, the printer or the computer forget that they are supposed to stay connected so they can chat.

I don't scan very often...maybe a few times a year. So these three may have not been talking to each other for quite some time. Enough time has gone by so that I forget how to connect them again. Fortunately , I kept instructions. Even then there were things that I had a tough time to remember. How do you write 8 on a printer that doesn't have a keyboard? I finally remembered how to write number and put in my pass phrase.

Now doesn't it feel great once you've solved a problem. 😊 So I scanned a recipe and emailed it .

  2. I share your confusion and anxiety about wi-fi printers. I have just bought a new laptop and connecting it with our printer seems like a puzzle for NASA to solve.

    1. They want to give you directions in print. I don't have the keyboard skills to reply properly. Finally, I got them to send me a printed copy of instructions and that worked.

  3. My laptop and printer don't seem to understand each other when connected wirelessly, when I connect them with a cable they get along just fine most of the time. I hope that your recipe is more intelligible than computer instructions.

    1. From the comments here, one wonders if you should bother with Wi fi.

  4. I usually forget the instructions for scanning too, I am glad everything can be googled. Take care, enjoy your day!

  6. Ugh 0-- technology! When I scan using our printer I just plug it in with a cable rather than faffing around with the WiFi.

    1. If I had a cable I would probably do the same thing.

  7. My husband does that stuff here. I have an amazing lack of technical ability, natural or learned.

    1. And I'll bet you're all to ready to let your husband do the computer stuff.

  8. My previous printer was connected only by wifi. I spent so many hours playing with it and adjusting it so that it would talk that I lost track of them all. It was an ink jet and when I couldn't buy ink for it anymore, I bought a black and white laser printer. I made sure it was hardwired to my computer and I haven't had a problem with it since the day I plugged that wire in.

  9. Another thing about printers that are not used very often is that the expensive toner cartridge can dry up! Frustrating!

  10. Oh heck yeah, I hear that pain. Our printer frequently forgets how to talk to our laptops. Have to do scanning from the computer, not the printer, or things go nowhere. You are not alone!

    1. At least you have one way to scan that works.

  11. Printers, scanners, and wireless connections can be very tricky. I tend to let Roger take care of all that stuff. It drives me crazy and he has the patience for it all.

  14. I hear you on this one. I got a new printer a couple of years ago and it had the WiFi feature so I started out with that. Over a few months I noticed it kept losing connection. My solution was to go back to the good old wired USB connection. I know this doesn't help with the get rid of wires issue, but at least the printer works every time.

  15. Some of these tips will help the rest of us. I have also had issues with our printer lately. It's lovely when everything works okay, frustrating when it doesn't.

    1. One thing I like about this printer is that it's never had a paper jamb.

  16. I have never liked the printer/scanner that we bought to replace one that was no longer compatible with our up graded computer. Then when we upgraded this last time we had to get the printer and computer to talk to each other all over again. Our printer sometimes doesn't seem to want to now which function we are using. When we scan, we never know where the scanned document or photo might end up. It's always a puzzle. But it does print well. :-/

  17. When our printer gave out, we started doing all our printing needs at a local Kinko's. I used to scan, but now I just take a picture with my iPhone and there it is! So much easier, since we don't really need much printing any more. :-)

  20. It is convenient but that's even debatable.

  21. My printer is more friendly than yours. May be because it is connected with wire. Thing is if we don't use the gadgets often, we might forget how to. So, I keep a folder on computer to refer back, just in case...

  23. I got rid of printer because it wouldn't talk to anything...it was too cheap of a model;)

  24. I have an old printer that still is hard wired but I only pull it out to scan. It won't work with printing at all so my next step is to get one that works or...use the old laptop and spend an hour letting it boot up and print a single page.
    Frustration!

  25. I also have a Brother printer which was not very expensive, but it does a good job of printing, less so for scanning. This model also works with wi-fi, and so far it hasn't given us any issues. Glad your problem was resolved, Red.
