I wear, hearing aids, glasses, a  mask for covid and when it's cold a tuque.  I have never mastered wearing the mask so that my glasses don't fog up. I've tried many tricks that don't work. So I find the only thing I can do is put my glasses in  a pocket and try to put them back on when I'm in the  store. When I go back out to  the car I try to take my mask off as soon as possible.

Now the mask, hearing aids, glasses and tuque don't communicate very well. In fact, they don't even like each other.

Yesterday I went for groceries. It was a nasty day. It was minus 25 C and a good wind.

When I left the store an empty bag blew our of my cart.

When I got to the car I wanted to get the mask off as quickly as possible. I felt one hearing aid pop out of my ear. Panic! I took the rest of my mask off but the hearing aid was not there. I took a quick look on the ground.  Nothing. Then I felt the side of my head and the hearing aid was caught on something on the side of my head...maybe a glasses leg.

So luck was with me to not lose the hearing aid but it was miserable.

I went to another store and used the same routine. After I was in the store a few minutes I pulled the glasses out of my pocket to wear them. I was having trouble to see. I found the products I wanted but couldn't see to read on them. I took things to the cashier and thought I better check my sales slip. I couldn't read it. I tried everything. Then I started freaking and wondered if I'd lost my sight that afternoon.

I went to the car for another attempt to read the sales slip. It was the same. I checked my glasses to see if they were dirty . No.

After another couple of checks I noted one lens was missing! Heart failure again. How would I ever find a lens outside. I checked the pocket where I keep my glasses and there was the lens!

I checked my sales slip and went home.

What a couple of stressful experiences!

Maybe I should go to the institution where the doors are locked and I can't get out to lose things.

  2. Oh dear Mr. Red - Yep, having "parts" on our heads is scary when some cost so much.
Maybe you've tried it, but if you tuck the top of the mask under the bottom of your glasses lenses, it minimizes the fogging of the glasses. I've even bent the edges inward on those stiffer cone shaped N95 masks to help.
I wear tri-focals with thin little temple pieces. I also have worn a behind-the-ear hearing aid on the right for years. As an RN, I have to remove the aid in order to use my special volume-control, volume-increasing stethoscope in my temporarily "naked" ear. Where to put my hearing aid when I'm listening to a patient? I went to a mall jewelry store and had them literally make a 1" chain with a lobster-claw clasp hook on each end, soldered. Every morning, I put one on the plastic ear hook of my hearing aid and the other clasp onto the temple piece of my glasses. When I remove the aid from my ear canal, it simply hangs down but is still on my glasses. (Can't put the aid in my pocket cuz other stuff is in the pocket, and I could break the aid leaning against the patient's bed. Can't have a lanyard for it or confused patients would swat at my aid.)
Depending on where I'm at, sometimes I use masks with the ear loops, but yes, I have to be careful when I'm doing the stethoscope, cuz the aid can get caught on the ear loop. That's why I like the masks with the two bands that go around your head and upper neck. Those bands don't interfere with the aid.
I also have a cochlear implant in my left ear, which had 1 part that's like a big over-the-ear hearing aid which is the processor and another part with a short 3" wire to a disc that attaches to the outside of my head with an internal magnet.
The cochlear implant is why I wear the masks with the two head straps, with both straps below my ear level.
If your lenses have just a clear plastic cord that holds the bottom half in, have your glasses place change that every year or so. They get "crispy" and lenses can fall out easier. Whew! Glad you found the lens. Hang in there. If you read this, your vision is fine. Linda in Kansas

    1. You've done a lot of creative thinking here. I your position you have to be able to work with out distractions. Outside in the wind and snow is a problem. You have the tuque over everything to start with. I got the screws in the glasses glued in today. So If I only have to worry about hearing aids it will be ok.

  3. How frustrating! I hope you were able to get the lens back in your glasses. I hate it when my glasses fog up. I try to wear my glasses where they are partially on the top of my mask so they won't fog up but it doesn't always work. I'm sure the hearing aids must really be an additional problem with everything else. I don't wear hearing aids but I do have trouble with my mask strap getting caught on my earrings. I usually wear hoop earrings and they just don't play well with the mask.
You don't need to go to an institution, these are problems we all have when dealing with masks. It's just that some days are worse than others!

  4. Don't hurry to an institution. MANY things are lost in those places: watches, dentures, hearing aids, glasses, rings, cell phones, chargers, shoes, clothes, skivvies. Linda in Kansas

    1. Yes you remind me of many stories of lost things. My friend had to go over to her mother often to look for the hearing aid. Funniest story is when I used to skate, Joyce's hearing aid would pop out and we would all be down on the ice looking for it!

    2. Gosh, haven't heard of that! Ouch, I'd hate to have one hit the ice! Linda

  5. I can relate! I wear reading glasses but I don't feel safe walking around with them on so shopping is a case of shop half blind or put glasses on and off 50 times.
The mask makes the glasses fog up. The walking stick clatters on the floor in cafes and if the velcro comes undone on the leg braces I have to stop right there and fix it.

If you go to an institution you might get night time visits from random old ladies

    1. I have trifocals and need distance so I wear my glasses all the time. Yes some of those people wonder around. I do not intend to move into a residence unless I really have to.

  7. Oh my! Almost losing a hearing aid and then losing your glass lens is a big fright. I hope you can find the lens or easily get a replacement.

  8. Hello,
My hubby gets his hearing aid caught on his face mask too. I guess it tangles easily especially with glasses on. I am glad you found your lens. Have a happy day!

    1. If he takes the mask by the top string it seems to get less tangled up.

  9. Dill pickle soup? Now THAT, I had to google. I've decided not to master that if it is the thing that will keep me out of an instution. I may be the only day. I thought I lost my wallet the other day at the grocery store. It was one of those trips for 'just one thing'. I had my armload of stuff and suddenly realized I didn't have my wallet. Heart attack.

I found it though. It was in my hand with 3 other items.

  12. What a stressful trip to the store, Red! I wear a mask that I can pinch tight over my nose, then glasses on top of that and the glasses don't fog up.

  13. One of those days that isn't very enjoyable but could have been a lot worse had the hearing aid and glass lense been lost.

  14. You had quite a day there, Red. But you managed to get through it and write this post about it. It is definitely NOT institution time for you. I've had some issues with glasses fogging up. The mask needs to fit more tightly, if you can get it to pinch up a bit more. I sometimes take my glasses off when we're out shopping too.

  15. The masking certainly adds another layer of issues for seniors. I didn’t ever master the mask and glasses either. Cataract surgery helped but if you don’t have cataracts…managing heating aids too must be tough.

  16. Ha! You are not alone in struggling with hat, glasses and mask -- and I don't have the hearing aids to complicate things! Glad nothing went missing.

PS -- I had to look up the word "tuque." I've never heard that term before.

  17. Glad you found both of your missing items. That would aggravate me too. I lost my keys once but found them in my fleece pocket instead of my coat pocket where I usually keep them.

  18. Yikes! The worst kind of adventures. Glad nothing was truly lost in the end.

  19. I have that same problem with the hearing aids. I expect it and sometimes certain masks don't catch on them. I don't take my mask off until I am in the car now so they will not fall on the ground.

    ReplyDelete
  20. That's my problem, too. The damn mask always pulls out a hearing aid. I always pull the glasses off my face fishing for the hearing aid. It's awful.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes, I know. I wear glasses and hearing aids too. I have pulled my hearing aids out several times and freaked that I might lose them. Since I can hear well enough without them, I sometimes take them out and put them in a case I keep in the car. Since I can see distances with out my glasses, I have at times put my glasses in my pocket, but I worry about them in there. Since I bought my new KN-95 masks, I have had less trouble with my glasses fogging up, but it still happens. I take my mask off when I get outside after shopping. It's all a big bother.

  22. I thought I was the only person ingenious enough to do things like that; I managed to catapult my specs off my nose while removing my mask. It's not easy to find your glasses when you don't have your glasses, but I eventually located them hanging from the handle of my shopping bag. Heaven knows what tricks I could get up to if I had hearing aids to deal with too!

    ReplyDelete
  23. That really was 'one of those days'. I don't envy you it one little bit. I don't have the same problem with steaming glasses but our weather is not quite as cold as yours.

  24. A bad day for sure but nice work telling the story. It seems to me that masks are expecially problematic for older folks.

  25. Yikes! That WAS stressful. Art wears glasses and has hearing aids too and they have popped out just like you when he adjusts or removes his mask.
