Somehow or other the Micro Manager and I got onto the subject of high school at dinner tonight. To be specific we were talking about what subjects we took in high school.
One thing I remember is that I took eight courses in my grade twelve. (final year)
The Micro Manager claims she took 6 classes. We were in different provinces so under different systems.
Now I tried to remember what courses I took. I couldn't name everything I took. She asked me if I took biology and I had to really think if I took biology.
Now I took eight courses but I have credit for nine courses. We had a system of applying to write exams. My Principal told me to order an exam for a course I hadn't taken. He said take a look at the exam and if you think you can write it go ahead. If you think it's too difficult just give it back to him. So I wrote it and I think I got 68%. The course was agricultural economics and for a farm boy who was in 4 H, it was an area that I knew quite well.
I will have to look at my old report card to find out what else I took.
I finished high school in June of 1957 which is 66 years ago. I wonder what else I've forgotten in the last 66 years??
The kid (me) in gr 10.
It was nice to get that credit for agricultural economics!
ReplyDeleteI remember all my subjects but not the marks and I threw my report cards away some time ago.
Some of my friends razzed me about that one.
DeleteAlways good to get an exam in something you didn't have to work for. I went to school at the time when many of my friends were children of German and Italian prisoners of war; they easily passed in languages which they spoke at home!
ReplyDeleteThey could probably have taught the course.
DeleteYou have your reports cards? Fortunately, I don’t. 🤓
ReplyDeleteWell it might be better if I didn't have these reminders.
DeleteDigitizing everything now might be a plan…
ReplyDeleteI don't think anybody would want these and I'm sure some government department has my records.
DeleteI can remember the names of a lot of the courses I took in high school but not the content! I still have many of my report cards as my Mom saved them and passed the files on to me. I wonder what my children will do with them when I am gone!?!
ReplyDeleteI have them because Mom kept them. What will happen when kids reports these days are digitalized?
DeleteI just got done scanning all the various reports cards of mine, my parents, grandparents and even two great grandparents onto my computer. I threw all but the two great grandparents report cards away. They are neat to look at but that feeling is so fleeting and having less stuff to sort through in the future was much more appealing.
ReplyDeleteI guess genealogists would be on the side of keeping things.
DeleteI love that you still have your old report cards. I wish I had mine. What a treasure and a reminder of all the classes we took and have long ago forgotten. I'm glad you're going to keep them.
ReplyDeleteI owe these things to my Mom who kept all things like that.
DeleteWhat interesting recollections! And that's a cute guy in your high school photo. I was so in love with my college guy, that I totally forgot that I took and passed Biology. My transcript says I made a B or C. My old elementary report cards are stashed away in an album somewhere. Bet a kid or grandkid would find those interesting. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteYes, my kids looked at these report cards and were not impressed.
DeleteYou look so young and innocent in your photograph Red
ReplyDeleteI was 15 and rather niave.
DeleteWow, I'm impressed you have all your report cards! My mom saved a lot of mine but we threw them out when she downsized. I think I took six classes as a senior: AP English, computer math (programming), drama, world history, composition and Latin.
ReplyDeleteHey, you remember them! Our schools didn't teach Latin and I wouldn't have taken it if it was available. Looking back on things now , I wish I had taken Latin.
DeleteYou have a definite Elvis vibe in that picture. Same period of time, I guess. And you were kinda cute, too! :-)
ReplyDeleteWow! that cute comment really goes to my head.
DeleteI digitized all my old school stuff and then got rid of the originals.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good thing somebody saved them for you. I won't digitalize mine.
DeleteI digitized all my old records and then got rid of them.
ReplyDeleteWell, I think it is time I threw mine out! I have a medallion for 100% attendance!
ReplyDeleteAs a farm kid my attendance was terrible. then in the winter we missed many days because of storms.
DeleteI have all of my class and individual school photos and report cards in a album. Some day my daughter or son will have to decide to keep it of not.
ReplyDeleteI stopped taking science in grade 10 when the requirement ran out. But in university I took an astronomy course out of curiosity, and the professor was really good.
ReplyDeleteInteresting how you got by prerequisites?
DeleteI made inquiries with the department. They said ss it was an intro to the subject, there weren't prerequisite courses, and that I should be fine. As it was, I got a final grade around 90 percent.
DeleteHi Red, I’ve got to hand it to you, ol’ buddy … You are posting faster than I can keep up with. 😊 I’m going to be too slow, sometimes, to get in a comment in time to get your reply but I’ll keep commenting, even if they are a little late, as long as you don’t mind. 😊 On this post, I’ve read all the comments, and have to say the one that made me smile the most was DJan’s. You absolutely do look a lot like Elvis in that photo! 😊
ReplyDeleteOh no, definitely don't dispose of those report card. I don't think I have any of mine, they were probably thrown out years ago after I left home. That's a lovely photo of you.
ReplyDeleteI still have my report cards too! Senior year I had two study halls, one of which I worked in the school library. Advanced Biology, Latin, English, World History and Current Events, Health, Advanced Algebra. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat I don't remember could fill a book. Of course, I'd have to have someone else writing that book.
ReplyDeleteyou remembered finally :)
ReplyDeleteo will never forget my subjects because they were my very favorite science subjects which i had to leave because of my long absence from school due to sickness
