SPRING

We had a very short spring this year. April was cold and frosty. When May  got hot and we had a couple of very hot spells. It was dry last summer and also the winter. So with very dry conditions you know what happened. We had some major forest fires. You know because many people suffered with the smoke from our fires. We still have about 60 wildfires and 10000 people away from their homes and farms.

Today's sunrise was 5:19 AM and sunset at 9:48 PM That means we had 16 hours and 29 minutes of daylight. With the long days our plants advance and mature quickly. My blue bells matured and now are going into dormancy. The bleeding heart is almost finished blooming. Some peonies are blooming. Irises are just ready to pop open. My tiger lilies are ready to burst into bloom.

So spring weather may have been  rather short but I'll take May's fine weather. So far June has been nice but not too hot. I've got my tomatoes planted so I'm ready for summer.

  1. I feel like we dropped into summer sunshine. The sun is coming up earlier and setting later even in Hawaii. I do like the winter coolness better. At least you've got beautiful flowers to look forward to and enjoy.

    1. It's a great time of year for plants. Easy on the cool of winter. We get freezing cold.

  2. We have wildfires in Nova Scotia now, too. It's not good, is it? I hope your tomatoes excel this year. Today sunrise here is 5:24 am and sunset is 8:54 pm, just a little less daylight than you have. I'm a bit surprised by that.

  3. Hours of daylight much as here - weather too. My blue bells are almost over - the stars of my garden at present are the Aquelegia. We are desperte for rain - in fact my gardener has just been and given my garden a good soaking before sunrise.

  6. It is raining with high winds here today. It is 6 degrees but feels like 0. We are hoping the weather the next few days will put out the fires in N.S. and N.B. We had a dry but cold spring. Hope the fires in the west are out soon too!

    1. 6 degrees with a wind is not comfortable. The burning has slowed down but there's still about 60 wildfires and 10000 people out of their homes.

  8. I'm always surprised by how long the days are as we get closer to solstice. Those long days of sunshine really do make the garden grow!

  9. I do hope the areas across the country with forest fires burning get some decent rain. We've had over 3 inches in the past week, so I'm willing to share. However, it's July weather here for the next week (30C), so I may be wishing for it to return.
It was a incredibly long winter, hopefully our summer lasts as long.

  14. Reading posts about what's blooming in gardens in different parts of the northern hemisphere is fascinating. As I'm a bit south of you & Pat (Weaver), I get to "relive" the Spring flowers by reading your respective blogs. Thanks ever so much for sharing your present as well as your past with us all.
    Stay safe & well.
