Lies

It would seem to me that there are penalties for telling lies. I think we used to get our mouths washed with soap or was that for swearing.

For some time it seems that, in particular,  politicians tell many lies. This was brought more to my attention with the debate of the two American presidential  candidates.

I looked up lies and penalties. There are many penalties for telling lies from community service to prison terms. Why are many people , in particular politicians dealing in lies? Well it works. The lie is intended to deceive. It seems as if lies are very successful in deceiving people. So the bigger the lie the more chance of success in persuading someone to vote for a candidate. But I still wonder why liars aren't charged with a criminal offense?

So why aren't liars charged ? If liars were charged and convicted wouldn't others  think twice about telling lies?

My neighbor is one of those who thinks if he talks fast, says nothing, tells half truths, tells conspiracies and goes round and round he will prove his point. When he does quit jabbering you are so mixed up , you don't know what to challenge him on.

So some day, I would like to see a liar charged with a criminal offense for telling lies. I have an idea of the first guy I would like to see charged.

    1. There seems to be no consequences for not telling the truth.

  2. yes, lying just muddies everything. There are sometimes penalties for lying: fraud charges often cover lying but there are lots of tricky ways to lie without penalty

    1. Good example of fraud but every day liars get away with things.

  3. Red, You've raised some important points about the consequences of dishonesty, especially in politics. It is frustrating to see lies go unpunished, and it does make one wonder why there aren't stricter penalties for deceit. Holding liars accountable could indeed deter others from spreading falsehoods. 1. They seem to think if they continue talking you will not notice the lies.

  4. I know someone who is a consummate liar. People know it and keep away. She is a kind person but only has a nodding acquaintance with the truth. Sad really!

    1. We are somewhat more civilized but we have our population of liars. Don't forget that I have an American daughter.

  6. Yes! Life would be so different if there really were penalties for lying, especially for politicians who build their talking points on lies. (NewRobin13)

    1. Some politicians would be forced to think of what would be good for the country.

  7. Charging liars would definitely be interesting. There are so many and it would take years to prosecute them all.

  8. People could at least care about the lying rather than shrugging it off. I find it difficult to lie. It's a fault of mine.

  9. I think that sometimes lies are repeated so often that the liar comes to believe it's true. Is that case, is it still a lie, or simply that they are mistaken? Wouldn't it be great to have an instant fact checker!

  10. It would seem that charging our Supreme Liar of crimes and even finding him guilty still has no consequence or punishment. He just lies more, and people still support him.

    1. The people allow some of our liars a free ticket so it's hard to deal with liars.

  12. Over 600 lies in the span of one debate. It was disgusting. And yet people are more focused on Biden's stutter than they are the outrageousness of Trump's lies. I don't get it. And now the Supreme Court has made a decision that grants him immunity for pretty much anything. Frightening times. My husband said it might be time for us to move to Canada. Any houses for sale in Red Deer?

  13. I'm totally agreeing with Debby here. I just can't believe those MAGA people can still support a man with no principles and tells lies after lies.
