END OF THE ELECTION

The Canadian election is over. Most of the commentators and analysers have gone home by now. I don't spend much time listening to all the paid wise men making comments.

So sometime in the evening I get to know a few of the broad issues and that's enough for me whether I like the results or not.

The Liberal party won the most seats but not a majority of seats so they cannot freely pass legislation unless a smaller party votes with them. The PC party came in second. Their leader lost his parliamentary seat . I did not like the PC leader and I think many Canadians did not like him. I thought he would be divisive for the country.

The liberal party spoke of unity for the country. I hope they can achieve some of it. If a few people want to take their ball and go home that's fine. We are allowed to express our own opinions

So now the government has to get down to work.

We have to look at elections as a whole. There are good things and bad things that happen. And then people have their individual opinions about things. Sometimes there are periods where they don't get much done and make political maneuvers to prevent legislation from passing.

Many people may not be familiar with a parliamentary system. The party with the most seats forms the government and presents legislation which the whole parliament debates. At the end of discussion a vote is held. If the governing party has  majority the legislation is passed. The Prime minister is the leader of the majority party. The leaders of the parties are chosen by the party. The only time people get to vote for the prime minister is in his own district.

  1. And that's a great crash course in our Canadian elections - well done, Red :) I did not learn any of that in school. It was not in the courses offered to us. I had to learn in the real world.

    1. You remind me that we didn't have anything on Government. I didn't mention that we have a governor general to sign bills into law. Governments have to play by the rules.

  2. I think unity is very important. Our country is so divided now.
Take care, have a great day!

  4. I'm glad the Liberals won. I wish we could get rid of You Know Who with a parliamentary vote, but he won fair and square and now we're living with the results.

    1. The parliamentary system is like all forms of government. People have to play by the rules. Your guy doesn't play by the rules.

  6. I really need to read up on Canadian politics. I have a faint grasp of it but not nearly enough to be able to discuss it with a Canadian.

  7. An interesting system and I hope it keeps working smoothly for your country. Unity and peace would be wonderful and we would be so envious.

    1. Both republic ad parliamentary systems work well if everybody plays by the rules.

  10. Interesting how the smaller party has to help with passage of laws with the bigger party due to the number of seats vs majority. Thank you, Canada, for voting for a guy who will probably tell Trump to lump it. You did what the U.S. couldn't do, twice. There are still sane people in the U.S. It's Trump that's betrayed Canada, not our good people. I'd think even the ones who voted for Trump think he's nuts for trying to claim Canada. Get those elbows and hockey sticks ready, just in case. Linda in Kansas

    1. We know the American people are with us. If Americans had another election right now the result would be very different. By the way, my daughter is an American.

    1. there also has to be some give and take. If people want their ideas and tolerate nothing else, it won't work.

  16. Whenever we went to Canada, it always amazed me that Canadians knew more about our government than Americans did and Americans know next to nothing about Canadian government. Thank you for your summary, Red. You're still the educator.

Glad that your country is hands of people who like to unite people and this is good sign indeed 👍🙏🥰
Your government structure is parliamentary which sounds more like ours .we are offered subjects like Sivics that teach about all the basic knowledge of government structures.
The point of government having less majority can be concerning as it restrain the fair process of legislation sadly
