ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

This morning, my favorite radio program, the Current, on CBC , had a section on Artificial Intelligence.

Now I've been trying very hard to ignore the AI issue. I think that I'll not be using a computer when AI  becomes common. Or AI has nothing for me. Nothing that I would use. You hear some controversial issues around AI. AI can be used for negative things. So I have not given AI much thought.

Today that changed. I started writing the history of my family starting from my parents. I have many stories about my parents and many photos.

I started the story using a blog format. The blog format is the only one I know. So before long I realized that the blog format wouldn't work very well. So Keith did the only thing he can do. He stopped writing and working on the project.

The occasional idea crossed my mind. My new niece knows everything about computers so I'll ask her. I talked to some family members but they thought my project was OK but a little too challenging.

So today I was listening the the radio show and people were phoning in when one caller caught my attention. He was writing a family history and had found that AI was  very useful tool. I was busy and didn't listen to all he had to say.

Well, that got me thinking! I will have to think about my project again. If somebody else can do their story , so can I.

So I will be checking friends and relatives to see if they can help me with AI.

I guess I'll have to learn about AI after  all.

If you missed anything on this morning's program, just find the podcast which has the entire show. I don't see it posted just yet but it should be up soon. Good luck.

  3. Oh, I don't think so, Keith. I've just today packaged up years and years of photographs and family genealogies to go to a nephew who has agreed to take them on. I kept track of family trees for many years and was grateful to find a family member younger than I to continue the work. And hopefully without the arrogance of AI.

    1. Good that you kept valuable articles and photos. For our parents generation there were few photos.

  4. I do not know enough about AI to have an opinion. However I wrote a blog about my husbands family history, the blog format worked great for me and recently I had the whole thing printed!

    1. I thought the blog format would work but I got lost and the thing became disorganized.

  5. Can't you write a longer chapter sort of thing, like for a magazine if a blog won't work? I don't understand how AI will help you, but then again, I don't really understand AI.

  6. DH and I took a class at the Senior Center about AI. It's true it can have negative features as can any new technology, but it also has some very positive ones. I find it extremely handy when doing research... whether it's for a story, personal, medical, or just general info. Good luck with your family genealogy project.

  7. No, A.I. seems to make it's own assumptions, make incorrect links..stick with the facts that you know!

  9. Good for you for experimenting. Just be careful that AI doesn't make stuff up! It does that sometimes. I don't use it myself but we teach our students how and when to use it and when not to, and that discussion has been an interesting learning experience for me.

    1. what I read between the lines is that kids are already using the technology. The just have to make sure what they get is correct.

  12. I don't know enough about AI either, though, people have been doing family histories forever without using AI so ... Can't you just type up what you know? My sister has found that local ancestry groups have been helpful in finding details but I am not sure if you have those up where you are. Also, the Mormons have a huge database to search and they do everyone, not just Mormons.

    1. Our family is lucky to have had a number of very dedicated historians. It's there for us to use and tell our story.

  13. It’s wonderful to hear how your perspective on AI is evolving, especially as it opens new doors for preserving family stories. Sometimes, the tools we once hesitated to explore can become our greatest helpers in keeping treasured memories alive. I’m sure with a little support and patience, you’ll find a way that feels right for you. I just shared a new travel post. I am excited for you to read it. Thank you. Happy weekend.

  14. Red,

I once said of AI, “It’s not meant for me,”
"Too techy, too tricky, I’ll just let it be.”
But then came a tale on the ol’ CBC,
Of someone like me—with a family tree!

He said, “AI helped me, it sorted my stuff!”
While I sit here muttering, “This blog’s not enough.”
I paused my grand story, it all felt too tough,
But now I'm inspired to huff and to puff!

If a stranger can do it, well—so can I too!
(With help from my niece and her digital crew.)
AI, it turns out, might just be a friend,
Who helps you get stories from start to the end.

So here I return with my keyboard anew,
Let’s see what this Artificial Brain can do!
If it tries something sneaky or acts like a brat,
I’ll pull out the plug—imagine that!

    John

    1. John, I'm just amazed at what you can say with your poetry. It's a treat to have you comment in poetry. So do you keep all your poems and what else do you do in poetry?

  18. New changes seem weird at first, disturbing even disappointing sometimes but change is here and acceptance is unavoidable
I envy how people of your country are facilitated for searching for their ancestors because authorities have stored the data of them.
I don’t think we have such luxury here

  19. Kay of Musings: I’ve done our family book a while ago… which actually should be done, but I’m now too lazy. Sigh. Whenever I ask a question online, the Google AI gives me the answer which I rather appreciate it condensing.
