I am not a great sleeper. It usually takes a while to go to sleep. I wake up three to five times a night. It helps if I get up and stretch. The one thing I have going for me is that my hearing aides are out for the night so I can't blame noise for causing sleeplessness.
So because of limited hearing some things get by my. How do I know? I find the evidence (tracks ) the next day. Deer pass through my front yard regularly.
There are two small entrances (one to two meters wide ) to my back yard. Animals are fairly cautious when they go through narrow entrances.
Well, a few weeks ago when I went out to my back yard I noticed deer tracks. Deer very seldom enter my back yard for the above reasons. But they do travel at night and with their color are very hard to see.
But what I noticed most about these tracks is that they were right below my bedroom window. So they passed very close to me and I didn't know it. I wonder if the deer knew I was that close?
While you wrestled sleep and stretched at night,
ReplyDeleteSoft hooves tiptoed past, just out of sight.
They passed your window, silent and sly,
While you lay there awake … and missed them go by.
Well said dear John♥️
DeleteOh my... That is very nice indeed.
DeleteInteresting question, did the the deer know you were that close. If you were asleep maybe they did not. I wake up like you do during the night and my hearing aids are charging.
ReplyDeleteAw shucks Red! Those were Santa's reindeer tracks before they hopped onto your roof. I know about this because my son saw the tracks near our house for many years. (Thanks to a wooden hoof print I made, I could make tracks in the snow dipping it in hot water, or tracks on the pavement up the side of the house with a mixture of dirt and chocolate pudding. The hoof even made tracks in the sand outside our lanai on a Hawaii trip.) They knew where you slept. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteAnimals are exquisitely aware of so many things, I think they knew you were there and decided you were no threat.
ReplyDeleteI hope they don't eat your garden!
I wouldn't be surprised if they did.
ReplyDeleteWe used to walk together around our local nature reserve. Even when chatting, deer would stand at the edge of the trees and watch us. No dog!
Stand still and sometimes they would approach quite near...you felt that they could sense things that were ok for them.
Ah yes, old men and their sleep or lack of it.
ReplyDeleteThe deer are so quiet they probably wouldn't have awakened you even with your hearing aids in.
ReplyDeleteDeer felt safe entering the yard at time of day. I didn’t realize they roamed so much at night.
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI do not sleep well, I am sure the deer, raccoons and fox visit our yard at night. Take care, have a great day and happy weekend!
It be wonderful to wake and see them peeking in the window at you!
ReplyDeleteThe deer know when you are up and about:)
ReplyDeleteI imagine they can smell your scent even through a closed window.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they were peeking in your window to make sure you were asleep!
ReplyDeleteDeer come through my yard all year. This time of the year during the night quiet, you can hear their hooves crunching the snow. In my opinion, the deer know there are people who come and go from houses, but as long as you are inside they don't mind :)
ReplyDeleteThey're probably super-hungry and looking for forage in your yard, which may be slightly warmer and more protected than the wider landscape? Just a guess!
ReplyDeleteIt would be interesting to know if the deer could sense you were only feet away. I love finding animal tracks. I have never been a good sleeper and I was still awake at 5.30 a.m. I do take naps during the day though, whether I want to or not. I'm very good at dropping off sitting up. I try not to so that I can get that good night's sleep but my body and brain rules the roost.
ReplyDeleteI take my hearing aids out at night, too, if I've remembered to put them in during the day. And of late, I've had trouble sleeping too. Are we getting old, Red?
ReplyDeleteWe live in dry land due to desert close by so all I remember to have once an owl or twice maybe, can’t remember what was the season but I remember his different and loud voice in middle of the night almost.
ReplyDeleteI think animals are highly sensitive about human presence so deer might know you were there but they also know you were not in position to harm
Can deer smell really well like dogs?
