The Mayor's Garden Party

Every summer our little city, Red Deer , has a Mayor's Garden Party. The Garden party was probably started 25 years ago and has been a popular event. It's meant to celebrate seniors. At one time there were many seniors around who had been the movers and shakers to build the city so it was fitting to celebrate seniors.

The garden party has great sweet treats, lemonade, coffee and tea. It's themed to the 1890's so the servers, council, Mayor and staff are in period costumes. There's usually great entertainment. It's a fun afternoon.

The Mayor's Garden Party is one of the Micro Manager's favorite events. She loves all about this event. 25 years ago it was a great event as she would go with her buddies. Now she doesn't have anybody to go with. Many our age have passed on or are no longer active. Some I just don't recognize anymore. I had to twist her arm to attend. I don't do social events of this type so I'm no support.

So when I met the Micro Manager after the event she was excited. She'd enjoyed the afternoon , found one of her friends and won a book.

Now I spent time taking a few photos. I met many people I knew and was conscripted on the spot to take some photos.

And I did meet the Mayor who's the one with the red hat and shoes!

  3. That's one of the tough parts of growing older, seeing our friends pass, get less active, and making favorite outings lose their interest. Glad you got her out, and that it was so much fun. :-)

    1. I didn't do the social thingy. I just skirted around and took some photos. I'm lucky that I worked with young people so I associate with people of all ages.

  6. Hi Red - It just occurred to me that you have the rather unique honor of being Red from Red Deer. It does look like you had a nice Mayor's Garden Party there. I like the look of Red Deer. I looked it up on Google Maps and see that you are a little north of Calgary. I did visit Calgary several years on a road trip. If I remember correctly I took an elevator up to the top of the Olympic Park ski jump tower for a wonderful view of the city. You've probably been there. Your Mayor is quite stylish! Thanks for the report on the Party.

    1. My name come from when I wanted to start an email account and it wouldn't accept my name so I took Red. I haven't been to the top of the ski jump but I have been to the top of the Sears Tower in Chicago and went out on the glass balcony. My favorite place to view Calgary is from Nose hill.

  12. Wish we had a mayor like that.
Great pictures, take more of people. Get in close. On the occasion I have to be dragged screaming to do occasions I end up enjoying chatting to people whilst getting their portraits.
This is a really good post.

  14. We have such a party as well in May - its a dress up thing and although I do not attend myself, I hear its quite nice. I would be happy to attend but think it would be quite boring...social lunches are just not my thing. Besides, our Mayor is short, bald and fluffy and couldn't talk his way out of a paper bag. He got the job because no one else was running and a true member of the "Boys Club". I am most happy MM enjoyed her day out, looks like a nice time and I am most impressed with your YOUNG Mayor. New Young ideas, new ways, new challenges - that's got to be a good thing.
