I had planned to do a post on summer solstice. I like special days and to me the summer solstice is a special day. I planned to get some photos to show our long day. I'm always impressed when the sun sets after 10 PM. Today the sun rose at 5:13 Am and sets at 10:00PM for a total of 16 hours and 47 minutes of sun.
However my special post on summer solstice was not to be.
Tuesday evening a vicious windstorm hit us again with gusts to 112 kph (70 mph) . Again there was damage done in my city. Many trees were blown down and this time buildings were damaged and about 5% of the city still does not have power. Windows were blown out in a few buildings and roof damage occurred . Some roofs were blown right off.
Fortunately I did not have any damage. Across the street a large spruce came down and landed on a house. A large poplar branch 25 cm (10 in) diameter fell at the school and the same thing happened half a block away. Most schools were closed yesterday.
So this is the second major clean up this spring.
Wow, Red - I didn't know you had such windy weather there. We often have tropical storms and hurricanes in mid or late summer, because they come up the Atlantic Coast from the Florida area, but I thought you were safe from such things! Nature can really cause a lot of damage. Glad you were lucky enough to escape it this time around.
ReplyDeleteWe rarely get this wind. The last time I remember such a wind was 1978!
DeleteWow. A lot of damage! It seems late in spring/summer for that kind of storm, but then maybe you get different weather patterns there in the northeast.
ReplyDeleteWell, the solstice was special, just not in the way you expected.
I live in Alberta which is just on the east side of the rockies. We rarely get damaging winds.
DeleteThat's some crazy strong wind
ReplyDeleteI have heard that North Dakota is bracing for high winds. I am glad you and your home are okay! :)
ReplyDeleteNorth Dakota is too close to you when they forecast high winds.
DeleteWow! That is some way to bring in the summer solstice. Here in Vancouver we had a wonderful, beautiful, sunny day. I attended National Indigenous Day with a friend and we enjoyed the natural surroundings. I hope your weather improves.
ReplyDeleteWe usually don't get high winds. We get wind but not like this.
DeleteThis is astonishing but it seems to be universal. Whilst part of the UK has been experiencing record high temperatures for the time of year here on Lewis we are having rain and gales (and not very high temperatures either).
ReplyDeleteIt seems there are extremes and they're not very far apart.
DeleteWow that was a heavy storm overthere.
ReplyDeleteThe storm was't very big but was powerful.
DeleteWhat a mess. It's hard to believe the power of the winds. We got a lot in Muskoka, not so much here. We're like the stone in the river, the storms wind down across the land. For that, I'm grateful as we have a lot of trees.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you were relatively untouched!
I'm lucky but some people had a major clean up and all the expense of broken trees.
DeleteWow, those are really strong winds! That would certainly cause damage. How fortunate that you were spared!
ReplyDeleteHey, I still can't ride bike on the trails as they are closed. Some of my photos show trees across the trails.
DeleteGlad to know you escaped without any damage, either to your property or to you! :-)
ReplyDeleteI only have one big tree in my yard so my chances of damage are less.
DeleteOn the news yesterday was almost the same damage your showing here with your pictures Red. I wonder if it was your area truly they showed? With so many storms and winds world wide. They have shown. One street over our driver who takes us to my trips before for the Hospital. His street was on the news also last night. The street had sung holes in places somewhat is flooded. So there is a detour . Lucky for him he can get to his entrance of his home. I am not sure about his neighbours. Oh yes. Our areas are getting hit bad. Windy and Tornadoes. My young son his roof shingles got blown off in St. Catharines, Ont. Canada. Very fortunate he got his whole roof replaced new shingles. I presume he has insurance. Most times. They call that an Act of God.
ReplyDeleteI've seen the news photos and they are similar.
DeleteThe situation in Red Deer made the news. I saw it on a television screen on campus yesterday and thought of you being out in it.
ReplyDeleteI was out in it when it hit. There was a major roar and it hit...no warning.
DeleteGlad you were safe and spared. That must have been a frightening storm, and lots of cleanup ahead.
ReplyDeleteI certainly watched for a couple of hours. Of course, the power went off and there was nothing else I could do.
DeleteGood grief! Another storm?! Glad you got through it damage-free.
ReplyDelete(I love the fact that someone painted Trump's name under the STOP on the stop sign! Ha!)
I was wondering who would see the stop sign!
DeleteGlad you survived this terrible storm.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I don't want to go through one of these again.
DeleteHopefully that's the last storm that will need to be cleaned up after this year.
ReplyDeleteI hope it's the last. This was the third storm and the worst.
DeleteGood gosh! That's awful! Summer is hurricane season for us so we're all keeping our fingers crossed. I hope that's all the violent weather you're going to have this season.
ReplyDeleteThe summer solstice came and went here in Nashua, NH, with nary a bit of nasty weather. Seems like Mother Nature was most unkind to your area and others too, Red.
