ANOTHER PROJECT

For a long time my bicycle helmet has been descending into ruins. The outer shell is in two parts and the tape binding them together dried out. It was replaced with duct tape. Somehow the inner styro foam kept getting dirtier and dirtier. The inside pads were either lost , on the wrong place or rolled up. The chin straps were stiff from all the absorbed perspiration.

For years I had left the helmet out in the shed over winter. This meant that I didn't bring it in and wash it.

I'm not sure you want to go any further with this post. You know now that the helmet was in terrible condition. When I would stop and talk to somebody and take my helmet off I would keep the inside hidden.

Well it got worse. During one of our recent snows, a mouse got in the shed and found that my helmet was a great toilet!

Well, what to do now? So after some careful consideration I decided to rehabilitate my bike helmet. I fixed up a pail so that I could soak the helmet in soapy water. I used a brush and then rinse. I let the helmet dry out. Surprise surprise the helmet looked quite clean.

The micro manager had kept the original helmet box and guess what...there were spare pads in the box. So I replaced all the gross pads with new pads. I had to use scissors to modify some pads but it worked.

So now I have a very nicely rehabilitated bike helmet! I'm not finished riding for this year but I'm certainly ready for next year.

I'm sure this is the most duct taped bike helmet around. It also looks like the old guy wearing the helmet could use some duct tape in a few places.

    1. Yes, I don't know how much longer a 78 year old will ride bike.

  2. It looks like you have done a good job of repairing your helmet. I'm glad you had another set of pads for it. That's handy to have a mirror on it. When I decided to take up biking a few months ago I got a good helmet and it was a little pricey. I don't ride nearly as much as you do yet but I am slowly improving. Now aren't you glad the micro manager saved that box!

    1. The duct tape replaces a very cheap tape. I don't know if I have anymore duct tape creations.

  5. I smiled to realize that after all that time your partner had saved the box! Looks pretty good to me, Red. :-)

    1. The micro manager saves everything...well not quite everything. I thought it was for her bike helmet.

  6. Keith, you cannot use this helmet. It doesn't have any integrity. I learned this when the kids were young and required helmets.
It's not a fine wine, like you, that improves with age. It is fragile and will only serve as a brain catcher. You are worth it. You manager will appreciate it.
For pete's sake, buy a new one!

    1. You finally got to the point. I knew that's what you wanted to say. the helmet is better than when it was new. You can't buy one this good today.

  7. When did you grow a beard?!

I'm impressed you were able to make that helmet last even longer! It looks pretty good, considering all it's been through.

    1. The beard's been there for 2- 3 years. I've had a couple of crashes. It's been worth it.

  8. Somehow my comment disappeared and may have gotten posted. I wanted to say that you did a great job on that helmet. It looks like it could last a while longer.

  11. Red, Congrats on the helmet restoration. The part I like best is the mirror. Was that always on there or is it a new “duct tape” addition? :-)

    1. You have to buy the mirror separately. It's the second one I've had.

  13. You must not use this helmet, sir. It absolutely will not save your head even in a minor fall. You would be better off without it. That padding inside is supposed to be under pressure so that it will absorb shock. Buy a new helmet, sir! (Now that I have yelled at you, so to speak, have a nice weekend!)

    1. Thanks. This helmet is exactly the same as helmets you buy today except for high end helmets. This is better than most helmets sold today. The others are very flimsy. Keep on yellin at me. I enjoy your comments.

  14. I would have thrown out the old and bought a new helmet. You did a great job fixing it and making it work once again. I imagine you won't leave it out anymore after riding. :)

    1. It should do me as long as i ride bike. At 79 I don't think I'll be riding much longer.

  15. I hope it is safe. Maybe time to buy a new one?

    1. It's safe. The hard outer shell is together and the styro foam is intact.

    2. That was my question too but if you are sure it is safe I guess you don't need a used one. Please be sure.

  16. It would probably be absolutely no use if you landed on your head but, hey, you would still have the money in the bank to help pay the medical fee.

  17. Ha-ha! This made me chuckle. Now I am going to say something totally crazy Red! Wait for it. How about treating yourself to a new helmet? Surely The Micro Manager will allow you to have a few dollars for such a purchase.

  18. What would we do without duct tape? You look great Red and I'm glad you got it in good order. I chuckled about the mouse, sorry, but I actually laughed out loud. Glad you were able to get it all cleaned up :)

  19. I was going to ask why not buy a new one but I see your answer to the first poster. I think you should post an ad on your local freecycle website and say you want a new helmet and what size it is or look for a used one in your local shops.
