MORE MOOSE

Just when I thought it couldn't get any better with moose stories it did.

Lynette was out with her trusty camera and was most fortunate to find two bull moose sparring to find out who was the best. I have spent more time in the bush than most people and I have never witnessed two bull moose in conflict.

This is the time of year for moose to breed. Males compete with some major fights to claim a number of females that they get to breed.

Most times of the year we have moose in our city of 100000. Sometimes there are quite a few. I think these moose are just across the river from where they saw the cow and two calves.

On several occasions I've had moose in my small urban yard . On one occasion I got up in the morning and looked out my front window and there they were...a mama with two calves about 4 m from me. Moose browse.  They eat the ends of shrubs and some trees. They were doing a good job of trimming my birch tree. It's fascinating to watch them eat. They take in an enormous amount of food. They don't do much chewing just a little so they can swallow the material.

They're very interesting animals. Thanks to Lynette for being on the spot and getting such excellent photos and thanks for letting me use them on my blog.

  1. Wow! Those are beautiful moose specimens. Can they pose a danger though? Do they charge at people who get into their territory?

    1. Yes, they could be dangerous but we haven't had any incidents.People keep their distance and don't take your dog looking for moose.

  2. Thank you for visiting my post yesterday. I shall put you on my side bar now we have met! I have been many times to Canada and so seen moose many times, although never fighting - lucky you. Seen plenty in yards in places like Banff - I would love to return but now widowed, over eighty and arthritic, so just have memories. Nice to meet you.

  3. I have seen deers fighting with each other once, it is impressive but they can get strangled in each other with their antlets, that is sad to see.

    1. Once in a while the antlers lock and unless someone finds them , they perish.

  5. I have seen many Moose over the years and some with magnificent racks, but I have never witnessed males during the rut. It must be quite a spectacle. Just to hear the sound would be pretty amazing.

    1. Yes, I go for the sound too. I've watched the mule deer and the clicking of antlers is the most.

  7. That's a great picture of two bull moose fighting. I've never seen a moose up close. And certainly would not want to be anywhere near these two fellas! :-)

    1. They are concentrated on each other. Just don't take a dog with you.

  9. Interesting, Red. Moose are like deer and cows. They are ruminants, and have 4 stomachs. Following eating periods, they will rest and return partially digested food from their stomach to their mouths to "chew the cud" and more completely break down their food before swallowing it again. I've seen this in our deer in the backyard.

  10. That's one good time to give them a wide berth, when they're dueling like that.

  12. Hah! This is what I meant in my comment on your other moose post about keeping out of the way of the males in the fall! Those are some great pictures by Lynette. I would love to have bragging rights for pictures like those!

  14. Sometimes there are quite few in town. I guess this is one of the years for many moose.

  15. That is so neat! I would have been scared to death, seeing that in the woods, but aren't they beautiful! Moose are huge, aren't they? You know, I am probably the only person ever to visit Alaska and not see a moose. My son-in-law drove us to the zoo in Anchorage so I could at least see one there, but for some reason the moose had been moved. :) Every time my husband and son-in-law left the house they spotted a moose. Maybe one day.

  17. They are such an interesting and different animal. We rarely have them in our area and so it is a treat to see photos of them.

  18. Your friend captured magnificent specimens of the bull moose. Moose is my favourite wild meat. Sadly I seldom get to eat it these days.
