WELL, ANOTHER RANT!

So "Don't You Hate it When" brought another product issue to my mind. So I thought let's get this one out in the open.

Now , I'm 80 years old and I'm in good shape as far as the age is concerned. My eyes are not like they were when I was 18 but they're still good enough to get by. Small print is another rant but that will have to wait.

What I really dislike is the pattern of putting the front of many products in black. They do it in cars. The dashboard is completely black! When I bought my car there was only one color that didn't have a black dashboard. So as well as having  a black dashboard , the writing is small and it seems like the dash is down by your feet.

Now I have an Asus computer and the front of it is black. It is down at the level of my feet as that's where the shelf is on my computer desk. So I have to back my chair up a bit and bend down to find a USB port. At night , I have my handy flashlight to find things. I also use my flashlight in the car.

So you can see that it's hard to see anything on my computer.

Another one? Do they make stereos any color but black. Again the flashlight comes in handy to find stuff on the stereo.

So here's my old stereo..  all black.

So other things that are black: toaster oven, radios, boom box!

I'll bet none of you have thess problems!

  1. Once upon a time this just wouldnt have mattered to me but now I know exactly how you feel. I especially find it a problem with food labelling, tiny little print with some difficult to read colour combination like red on purple.

    1. I hear ya. You reminded me of another challenge. Stores that put price tags at foot level.

  2. Ha, ha, some of us have similar problems to varying degrees, especially finding USB ports without direct lighting. These days I have little flashlights everywhere. I prefer them to using the phone flashlight.

  3. I would be unable to do quite a few things if I didn't have my flashlight and my magnifying glass handy! You're not alone by any means :)

  4. Oh I sure do understand this rant! I swear the older I get the smaller they make the words on all products! And yes, it is hard to see things on a black surface. I'm one that also uses a flashlight and magnifying glass a lot!

  5. Yes there can be problems and I keep a small torch beside my hifi stuff so that I can see all the various labels.

    1. Sad that almost all seniors have problems with color and print size.

  6. Maybe the manufacturers think of black as a universal "non colour" acceptable by everyone.

  7. Hello,
My eyesight isn't what it used to be either. MY desktop is black and the USB are hard to find. I do have my little Dell desktop sitting on top of my desk so it is handy. Take care, enjoy your day!

  8. I use the flashlight on my smartphone all the time, to see things that should be more easily visible. And my magnifying glass to read tiny print, needed ever since cataract surgery two years ago now. Rant on, Red! :-)

  9. My computer is black, and the compound the problem, all of the posts are under a lip on the top, and I can't see them anyway.

  10. Oh yes! I really do since I have issues with my eyes. However, adaptation is the key. As long as I can adapt, I don’t mind. It’s when I need help with the adapting, that’s when I’ll have a problem.

    1. Yes, we all adapt but there comes a time when we've gone as far as we can go.

  12. I've never thought about it before, but yes those black devices and little print make it so difficult. When our little internet modem acts up, we have no idea where to start looking for the problem.

  13. Hi Red, Again, you leave me with a smile. Using a flashlight to find the USB port ... how many times have I struggled with that! Wow. "User friendly" ... that's what I want to see in my future purchases. Re your comment on my last post on my blog … I left a reply for you there. Have a happy day, take care, and stay well.

  16. I had to check my stereo. It's has a grey front. When I had a desktop computer, I put the tower on the table so I didn't have to do what you do. :)

  22. After I read this post, Red, I checked around our apt and all the things you mentioned here are black with the exception of the toaster oven as it's silver. Here's a few more we have in black: coffee maker, desk lamps, modem, printers. And why are USB outlets sometimes so awkward to insert a plug into?

  23. Yes it is a problem...my guess is that black goes with everything:) My computer sits on a low shelf and like you said a light comes in handy:)
