GARDENS

I like gardening. But when I think of gardening it only means vegetables not flowers. Now I know that in most cases when garden is used it's to include a whole yard and how it's landscaped. Here, for some reason garden refers to vegetables.

So this year for some reason or other I have a very good vegetable garden . It will have something to do with the weather. We've had lots of rainfall. Now I don't have a huge vegetable garden. I just have enough so that I can experience the freshness of vegetables that come directly from the soil.

An overgrown raspberry bush

I do grow some perennials. Could someone tell me what this one is?

I have an excellent crop of onions.

                   Peas are just about ready

                   I love beets

  1. Your veggie garden looks good, especially the beets. Down here you will sometimes see veggies growing among flowers and shrubs in the garden that fronts the street. I like the idea of mixing it up but it doesn't always appeal to the purists who think the front is for display and the back garden (yard in Canada?) is for practical vegetables.

    1. Sounds like a good use of space to mix up the plants.

  2. I think the flower in question is bee balm aka monarda if I recall the name correctly.

  4. Hello,

Your veggie garden sounds wonderful. We are only growing some tomatoes and a few herbs.. Sorry I can not help with the perennial id, it is pretty. Enjoy your day, have a great week ahead.

  5. I'm "green" with envy. We used to have a garden, but not since we downsized to our tiny patch of land in the middle of town. The saving grace -- our brother-in-law who lives in the country and, fortunately for us, is very generous with his produce.

  6. Maltese cross? Your beets put mine to shame. I noticed pea pods yesterday and the beans are flowering. I can beans and tomatoes and always hope for a good crop. Onions and carrots usually take me through to Feb.

  11. I believe your red flower is Maltese cross, aka Jerusalem cross (Lychnis chalcedonica). We had one too although ours appears to have died. Yours is VERY healthy!

Bravo on the vegetable garden! It looks like you're doing a great job. I have no patience for vegetables. I want beauty.

  12. I like your onions. Stuff fresh from the garden is the best. Why the cage by the peas?

    1. Well, only you would notice the cage. I have a few nuisances that bother me.

  13. You have lovely gardens, both flower/shrub and vegetable! (We use garden here the same as you do; I thought "garden" to mean "entire yard" was a British thing?)

It's good to have lots of rain if you have lots of sun too. Here we have had alternating weeks of cold and heat, and my deck plants are sickly and scrawny. It's a big disappointment after last year's initial success :)

  14. Well that's a garden to be proud of.

  15. Given Red Deer's short growing season, it is amazing what you are able to achieve in your plot. Your soil looks good so I guess that helps. Maybe you should change your nickname from Red to Green. Green for Go!

  16. Wow! Everything you have growing there looks beautiful and so healthy. I would love to grow beets but my husband hates them. Don't know what the flowers are, but they are very pretty.
