DRONE ENCOUNTER

The other evening when I was on my walk I had an encounter with a drone.

I'm always interested in model airplanes and now drones although I don't have one and have only see one drone in action.

The other night I noticed this little fellow off to my right about 50 m away and 15 to 20 m up. It was coming in my direction. It dropped elevation and came closer and closer. In fact, it was less than 5 m away. I was talking to two friends

Now this encounter was spooky.  There was no noise. I felt as if someone was looking at me. I felt like talking to the creature.

It was going to go between us when suddenly it veered up and away. Then I heard someone say, "Sorry about that " and I noticed two people on the school yard.

I'm sure this was the first time flying for this guy. He was learning and experimenting.

Now I know there are rules about where you can fly drones. This guy was a way off being legal.

Many people have fun with their drones and I can see why. They just have to learn the rules before they go out.

My friend Tony got a drone for Christmas. He went out to try it and lost it. They looked for days to find his drone. A few weeks later someone came to the door with a drone and asked if this was his. Yes, it was and he had his Christmas present back.

  1. What a strange experience to have it fly so close to you! It would be fun to have a drone with a camera and take photos and videos.

  2. No noise and very close to you! Definitely spooky, good thing you had two friends nearby. I've had no personal experience of seeing a drone.
A couple of youths were in very hot water earlier in the year when they flew a drone over a grass fire in Tasmania, which meant the water bomber was grounded. Like Canada, fire situations are taken seriously here and these two got a dressing down from the local police.
Good thing your friend Tony got his Xmas present back.

  3. I had an encounter with a drone at sunrise off my balcony. I felt quite exposed though it was across the street. I love the aerial photograph one can get with a drone for travel vlogs and I'd love to use one myself except I don't think I'd like having to follow rules when using one. It seems like too much trouble though I may be off base in saying that since I haven't investigated.

  4. Hello,
I hope people are careful when flying their drones. I have had one come and hover in front of me at a national park beach where it is illegal to even fly them. Take care, have a great day!

  9. I think they are very intrusive, and I'm glad there are rules against using them to spy on other people.

  10. That really was an eerie close encounter with a drone. We haven't seen any lately, but last year we would see them flying around town. Spooky.

  11. Wow! Tony was lucky! I'm not a fan of drones. We talked about getting one early on, but now it seems like everyone has one and they do make an infernal buzzing sound. (Some of them.) I'll do without.

  12. My husband had one but the regulations became so strict, it wasn’t worth the effort to use it.

  14. I hate the noise, and I always feel like shooting them. Weird because I dislike guns and have never owned or shot one. I would learn, though, if shooting drones was legal.

  16. I can see using drones for photography but I'm not sure what the attraction is for just flying them around and making a nuisance of themselves.

  18. I think a drone coming so close to me would have alarmed me, I don't even like seeing one in the distance although I know photographers who use them very successfully. Like a lot of things I think there is a time and place for them.

  22. Glad your friend got his Christmas drone returned, a rarity it would seem. I have seen some drones flying over the river where we live, and thankfully none have seemed to land in it. It does seem to take some skips and perhaps a lot of practice.
