Some of your comments on drones reminded me of a poor and boring video made of my home village. For every good drone video there are many that are extremely poor.
I was born at Esk, Saskatchewan, Canada. To be more precise I was born about 3 miles southwest of Esk on the farm. From about ages birth to ten. Esk was our village where we got mail and the few groceries we needed. We also sold our farm produce there. At the highest point of Esk's existence there were about 15 houses and 50 people. Many years ago Esk faded into history and became a ghost town.
Someone decided to use his drone and make a video of Esk. I was interested in the video but I'm sure very few people are interested in the video.
You can go to the site on youtube but I doubt that few people will watch it,
The two large farmyards shown were once on the edge of the village. As the village became abandoned , the land was rezoned and taken by the farmers. My grandparents retired to this village.
I enjoyed the video Red! I've always liked drone videos and they are even more interesting if taken of places you know. Can you see where you used to live in the video or is it too far out of town?
ReplyDeleteIf there was a better camera , you could definitely see the old farm.
DeleteI don't know if I've been through Esk but I was nearby there many years ago. Beautiful in summer.
ReplyDeleteBe interesting to know where you were.
DeleteWe made a stop at Manitou Beach. We so much enjoyed the water there.
DeleteWell at least it is a nice memory for you to have an airview of this place!
ReplyDeleteYes, I would like to see some of the photos of actual houses but maybe there aren't any photos left.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteI did watch the video showing the village of Esk. I love seeing the rural scenes and farmland. Take care, enjoy your day! Wishing you a happy weekend!
It's hard to picture what it was really like. There was a school, three churches , store and post office.
DeleteThe countryside in the video reminds me of the farming communities in the centre of.PEI. Of course here, if you send up a drone, in the distance is the sea. The video gives a sense of how vast the land is. This country is pretty amazing. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI wish this guy had a better camera.
DeleteI sort of watched it. I kept advancing the slider and skipping sections because it was a bit slow to unfold for someone who doesn't have a connection to the area.
ReplyDeleteI would think there would be little interest by a person who is not familiar with the area,
DeleteThat was fun. Drones are certainly an interesting way to see an area. It looks very rural.
ReplyDeleteIt's typical saskatchewan. there's very little left.
DeleteWow, it's very flat there, flatter than Florida!
ReplyDeleteIt is very flat.
DeleteI gave it a watch. The flatness of the area catches my attention.
ReplyDeleteMany people are not used to the flatness.
DeleteI loved watching that video. It reminds me of the one time I drove across Saskatchewan in the 1970s. I remember thinking I could see so far, so very far, that I could see the curve of the earth. Thank you for reminding me.
ReplyDeleteNow , you've got me curious. what route did you take. Why did you drive across Sask?
DeleteRed-- It was 1973 or 1974 and my partner and I drove from California to Virginia to see family, then north to Canada. We took the highway that goes across Canada that crosses Saskatoon. We camped along the way in our homemade camper. The wide open plains of Saskatchewan were unforgettable!
DeleteDid you go on hwy 14 or 16?
DeleteI don't remember which highway. I thought at the time that it was the only major highway that crosses Canada. Mmmm?
DeleteActually he is an excellent drone operator. All dairy farms, with big ponds for cow poop. I forget what they are called. I love the graded farm roads.
ReplyDeleteI' glad you liked this video.
DeleteSaskatoon? If you were on hwy 16 or 14 , you would have gone by this little village.
ReplyDeleteI found that weirdly fascinating! I watched the whole thing. That guy clearly takes his drone seriously, and the photography was great. Makes me want one! That is some FLAT country, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how you find the video fascinating. It's fascinating for me but I didn't think others would find it interesting.
DeleteSuch a big, wide landscape. You can see for miles and not a hill in sight. The very heart of Canada. In many ways, it must have been an amazing place to grow up. Good job your family got along fine. Thank you for sharing this Red. I genuinely found the drone footage mesmerising and I think I saw the old church too.
ReplyDeleteCheck out another video called Esk sask. You will see much more about the church.
DeleteJust finished watching the video. Very rural and flat. The winters must have been brutal.
ReplyDeleteYou get used to the cold and prepare for it. As kids we played outside all the time.
DeleteThat's rural, indeed! I grew up in inner city Toronto!
ReplyDeletePeople used to live there when the farms were smaller.
DeleteYou are raising the bar when it comes to publishing new posts on Hiawatha House. I put social media on the back burner for a few days and missed three of your post. Congrats on coming up with these neat posts. Keep up the good work. I did watch the video on Esk. Interesting, but like you said, probably more interesting to those who have some connection to the area. Maybe this will lead to more posts telling us about your early years growing up in Esk.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I call them the way I see them
DeleteOK, I will admit upfront that I also skipped through some parts of this drone video, but found the bits I watched very interesting to see the contours of the land. I would not want to spend winters in the area.
ReplyDeleteYou get used to the cold and can prepare for it. We played outside all the time.
