WILL WE LEARN ANYTHING BY GOING THROUGH THIS PANDEMIC?

As a society , are we going to learn anything by going through the covid pandemic? Will our behavior change in anyway? Will we make a permanent change in something that will influence society in other areas?

There is much happening because of covid. We've had to learn about sanitizing . We've had to learn about protection. We've had to be concerned about safety. We've had to learn about responsibility to others. Some of these things have to become a habit. I found the sanitizing a hard habit to learn. I've got it now. Are businesses going to keep sanitizing materials at the entrances as they do now?

Will any of these things stick with us once covid is over?

Then we have the anti mask people and anti vaxxers. These ideas are mixed up with ideas of freedom and not doing what the government proposes for the good of all of us. Will these people learn anything by going through covid. I think an opportunity has been lost because of political philosophy which supports such lunacy.

However, I will not be getting the first vaccines that come out. I think they need a much longer time to be proven safe. I have always got a flu shot since I retired.

Much has been learned in science by having to study this disease on how to treat it, prevent it, and find antibodies that we can use. I think the scientific developments will pay off  for a long time  in the future.

So what I'm thinking tonight is will our behavior change because of covid. I know my hand washing technique has improved. My hand washing used to be more or less wetting my fingers. The thumbs and palms weren't washed. 20 seconds is a long time to wash. I still can't wash for 20 seconds.

  1. Red, it's an interesting question. I think that it will become an expectation that every business we enter offers sanitiser.
I suspect many other things will eventually be forgotten.
I certainly don't want to be in early vaccine rounds, my mind might change on that, depending on my perception of vulnerability

  2. Hello,

I have been going with the flow, do all I can to stay safe. I will not get a vaccine, maybe wait until it is proven safe. They seem to be rushing the vaccine, will it go through all the regular tests before going public. Take care, enjoy your day! Have a great week!

    1. I think that right now all we can do is take the proper precautions.

  3. I have improved my handwashing, too, through this pandemic. I think there will be many changes that will stay with us after it is passed. But I don't think it will be gone any time soon. :-(

    1. I agree that I don't think covid will disappear for a while.

  4. I never wash my hands for a full 20 seconds, but I do wash them entirely and quite thoroughly with soap. I think that's sufficient.

  5. I saw an article this morning about vaccines. I hope by the time they market one it has been sufficiently tested.

I find them asking the hardest. But, whatever it takes to stay safe I will do.

    1. You realize the risks. Many people don't.

  6. This is a very thoughtful post and I agree with your comments. I don't think I will get the vaccine right away either because I think it should be tested more before it goes out to all. In the US, I wish we had seen more cooperation instead of all the political craziness!

  7. I sometimes double wash because I don’t always wash long enough. I sure do it after I clean the cat litter.

    1. WE have to make a special effort to wash better. I think washing hands is probably the best prevention.

  8. I wish we could change human nature a little more. We as a people need to be less selfish and self centered. And don't get me started on the "personal freedom' thing. Some seem to have forgotten that freedom only works when it goes hand in hand with responsibility.

    1. You have to get going on the freedom thing to the right people. These people are quite irrational about freedom.

  9. One has to sing a couple of verses of a song to fill out a twenty or thirty second handwashing.

  10. I've been a germophobe for a couple of years, so I've been practicing the handwashing insanity for quite some time. About vaccines, we say we'll take one when the very trustworthy and compassionate head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases here in the states, Dr. Fauci, takes it. Then we'll know it's safe.

  11. I wash my hands but occasionally forget when I come back home after shopping. Then all of a sudden, I will remember and then go wash my hands. I'm getting better but not perfect and I'm ok with that.

  12. You have raised some great questions, Red. I agree that washing for 20 seconds does seem long and rarely go that long, but do use soap and wash more often. Of course, my mother always would tell me to wash your hands, so it's rather ingrained. I don't know if merchants will continue with sanitizers everywhere or mask dispensing for those foolish enough not to have their own. I think barring such people from entry would be far wiser.

    1. Barring people without masks has caused some very nasty incidents.

  13. I believe some of the changes we've seen will be with us in some part for a long time. It seems like so much has changed in just a few months. When I go out anywhere I almost feel like I'm walking around in a book or movie because things seem so unreal especially with everyone wearing masks. I will eventually get the vaccine when available but I won't be the first in line!

    1. Very few people wear masks outdoors here. About 25% wear a mask inside.

  14. I think enough of us will learn nothing this time. A concerted effort must be made to induce enough citizens to behave responsible, as has been done in Canada and in most of the countries of Europe.

  15. I hope we will be better prepared for a pandemic the future. And perhaps even the dimwits see that science is real. I think the timing of all pandemic and the demand justice for love color will bring a serious change to American culture. I feel it I sense that and the last group site taught 10 years ago now and others like them will make that happen. And without my rose-colored glasses on with future successful struggles the American dream will become a reality

  16. I've found myself washing for 30 - 40 seconds, because that's how long it takes for the water to get hot, and they recommend using at least warm water. I guess you all have a better hot water heater than I do.

    Saludos Rojo!!

  18. Will we learn anything? An excellent question. It seems to me that we must. I wonder how many who would not wear masks ended up getting sick. I'll bet if they had it to do over again they would wear masks. Just consider how much better we could be doing down here in the "States" if Trump had taken the virus seriously from the beginning. He has downplayed it and would not even wear a mask for months. I wonder how many deaths can be attributed to his lack of leadership. The pandemic can teach us a lot. I still wonder if people are paying attention.

  19. COVID19 has caused us to question so many things. You say "when it is over" but I wonder when that will be - if ever. How far into the future must we go to put this thing behind us?

  20. We have carried around hand sanitizer for many years because of my husbands frail health so that part is second nature for us. I don't go inside store so I have no idea what is there anymore.

I am not afraid of the vaccine and will take it when it is available...what harm can it do? I took the Shingles shot and got sick as a dog...but it had to be done. Everybody has their opinions...however if you go into a store you should wear a mask and be respectful of peoples space. :)
