CARROT SOUP

This morning was dull, cool and windy so I said to myself, "This is a soup day."

I went to the freezer and got the bag with five cups of carrots and got on my way to making carrot soup. While the soup cooked I worked on a sudoku puzzle.

When the soup finished cooking I took the blender and pureed the soup. Ah , great stuff.

However, I wouldn't have got good marks on presentation as I had orange food on a red table cloth and I had slopped soup up the sides of the soup bowl.

How do I know about presentation? My classroom was beside the Home Ec lab for a few years. I was in the home ec lab often . Sometimes the  kids baked cookies and I was right there. The kids were always judged on how they presented the food they made.

I have great respect for those teachers who taught in a lab situation. Shop ,drama, art and home ec teachers always had their kids on task. I always thought that these teachers could naturally be excellent administrators. I can remember going into the shop and kids were using saws and other tools without killing themselves.

Well, one time the guys on staff got the idea that they would treat the female staff members to a formal breakfast. Guys knowing anything about a formal breakfast?!!! I don't think so. So the home ec teacher was a good sport and helped us to make a menu, prepare and serve a formal breakfast. My contribution was fruit salad. It was fun. We acted as formal waiters and served each table. It was a highlight of the year. Later in the year the guys were served a lunch.

Good rapport is extremely necessary for a successful staff. Money can't buy rapport but a fun breakfast can.

And by the way home made soup on a cold day is just right.

  1. You put me to shame. I might make mince pies now and again but all our soup comes out of tins!

  2. Hello,
Your carrot soup looks and sounds delicious. I need one of those puree thingies. I remember having to put together a formal dinner in my Home-Ec class too. BTW, I love any kind of soup. Happy Sunday, have a great new week ahead!

  5. I hope that you made The Micro Manager a bowl of carrot soup too! Did you have some bread with it? You can't beat a hunk of buttered fresh bread with a nice bowl of soup.

    1. I was sort of the Ho ec beggar when it came to cookies. But I really think lab teachers have a special talent.

    1. Cooking came to me later on in life. I didn't send you any snow but be on the look out for some very cold air. It's very cold here.

  13. Hi Red, Interesting coincidence. I taught in Business Ed. Our classrooms were right across the hall from Home Ec. Although I think we had good rapport within the staff, I don't recall any fun lunches or breakfasts. You are a lucky man. :-) By the way, I love soup on a chilly day. Your soup looks good.

  14. And serving it on a hand crocheted table cover. Bad marks!
    However, the soup looks fabulous.

  15. Great memories! Nothing like sitting across the table for conversation while enjoying a good meal, (or driving in a car I find).

  18. My crockpot has been getting a real work out in the cold. I made cream of potato soup and black bean soup. Right now, I'm making a pot of chili. Nothing better to warm the soul than a bowl of piping hot soup.

I have loads of recipes for many different kinds of soup. When my kids were all home and I was working nights, it was the only way I could guarantee everyone got a hot meal. My son was vocal about how much he hated soup.

Imagine my surprise to hear my daughter-in-law say, "Dylan told me that you make the best soups!"

I waited years to hear that compliment.

  19. I’ve never had carrot soup. It sure sounds healthy and it’s colorful. We make lots of soup in the winter and always make extra for the freezer so we can have some no-cooking days. Upon your recommendation I think I will look for a carrot soup recipe.

  20. I love homemade soup! I make plenty of different types and fill up our freezer with them.

  21. It’s snowing here today the butternut squash soup is gone, so it’s time for more soup and I have a bag of carrots. Thanks for the suggestion, Red. You are right that it’s perfect on a cold day, especially here today.

  22. parsnip soup is my most recent favourite, I can't say current because it's 30 degrees C here today, not soup weather!
You had me recalling my home ec. prac classes where one mark was allocated to a table decoration. Without the decoration there could never be a perfect score, no matter how good the food was. I took to carrying a small and not very attractive ceramic ornament in my school bag so I always had a decoration. It didnt really beautify the table though!
