It's still very cold here ...minus 32 this morning. I took the photo about 8:30 this morning when you see a combination of ice fog and other crap in the air.
All comments on the last post were interesting. I usually reply to the comments that come on the first day the piece was posted. Many comments came later and I will reply to some here.
Baili who lives in Pakistan is worried about these low temperatures. Well, I wouldn't want her high temperatures of 50 C in the summer. Even 25 C is hot to me.
Debby checked to see if I wasn't frozen stiff. It's not such a funny comment. People do freeze to death.
Tabor wonders if I worry about my furnace not working. Yes I do worry about a heating malfunction. It happened a few years ago when the thermostat died. It happened last week to Far Side.
Yorkshire Pudding thinks Canadians are tough. Most of it is a state of mind and then we have to be smart when comes to clothing and all activities .
John from John's Island found a weather warning for my town. It's something that I'd never seen before and warned of the danger we face.
What I come away with when we discuss temperatures is that it's all relative. We can get used to temperatures if we have a good attitude. We have many new immigrants here from Africa and Asia. They seem to have no problem with our weather. They drive their cars in winter driving conditions as well as anybody else. The Supervisor I had when I had a paper route was from the Phillipines. He had to make sure that all the cry baby carriers got out and if they didn't he delivered the route. Not ever any complaints from him about the cold. I suppose I could get used to Baili's extreme temperatures but I would have learn few things.
I lived and worked in the frozen north tunda for about six years and was amazed at how warm everything felt that first winter I came back south to my homeland. I laughed at how everyone else was bundled up. That lasted only one winter before my body adjusted.
ReplyDeleteWe have a fairly large immigrant population in our town. You can sort out the new ones from the ones who have been here awhile by the condition of their vehicles. The new ones don't have a straight unmarred body panel on their cars, especially since we've had something around 10 days where the road hasn't been visible under the icy snow pack. But our town is built on the river bluffs so it is all up and down. Takes a special kind of person who can learn to drive on slick roads that aren't level.
I spent 5 years in the Arctic and only remember being cold once. Of course, I was in my 20's and maybe that's why I didn't feel anything.
DeleteOn a day when I was wearing short and tee in the Rockies, I encountered two travellers from Mississippi wearing jackets, and they were still a bit chilly.
ReplyDeleteNo problem keeping warm in the Rockies . Going up and down will keep you warm.
DeleteI cannot imagine the 50 C either, Red. Given a choice, I’d stick with what I know.
ReplyDeleteThere has to be a happy medium.
DeleteYou are right Red. If one is dressed well enough for the weather we can tolerate it. It's those who live outside on the streets that suffer. Keep warm. I found it cold enough here in Vancouver and the news said today we broke a 100 year old record for cold weather. It's nothing near your temperature but it's all relative. It's wet air not dry air and I think that is harder to take.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard from my son yet . He will fill me in on his weather in Maple Ridge.
DeleteStill cold and snowy here in Illinois! You mentioned in your comment to me that your daughter lives around Chicago and so do I! I am in the western suburb of Naperville. Wouldn't it be a coincidence if we were neighbors?!? Stay safe and warm, Red.
ReplyDeleteI don't know where Naperville is but they live in La Grange.
DeleteWe do see temperatures that cold on occasion. It's all about dressing for the weather.
ReplyDeleteThere is a smart way to dress and then we have to keep active.
DeleteWe were a balmy -22 this morning! Stay warm!
ReplyDeleteI'll stay warm but I did go out walking.
DeleteI like it when it's very cold. What I don't like is when it's 4 or 4 degrees above freezing. It's not crisp - it's just cold and miserable!
ReplyDeleteAt that temperature it's wet and sloppy. Somebody said the other day that they would like the same temp all the time. I think it would soon get boring.
DeleteMinus 32! JEEZ. I have no right to complain about our predicted 17ยบ!
ReplyDeleteAs I said it's all relative. You probably don't have the proper layers to keep warm.
DeleteIf you dress right, there is not problem. I can't imagine living in a hot temp place. 50C is much too hot for me at least when it's cold you can dress in layers but what to do in 50C.
ReplyDeleteYou know the drill about layers. It works like magic.
DeleteYou are right when you say it's all relative. But still, the dangerously cold temperatures you have are scary because they can be dangerous. This past week we have had mainly single digit temps and they tell us the next week is going to be even colder. We go through a cold spell like this every couple of years or so but I'll take this any day over the temperatures you and Connie at Far Side have to deal with all winter!
ReplyDeleteI hear you when you say very low temperatures ae dangerous. However , I rarely hear about anybody freezing to death. I rarely hear about any frost bite.
DeleteIt is attitude as much as anything. We just suck it up and get out and clear the steps and the walk and the car. I think we're about equal this winter for misery, but yours lasts a bit longer than mine.
ReplyDeleteSomething has to be done and we do it. We ha a dentist appointment Wed . morning.
DeleteWe are so thankful that a new furnace was located and installed! Being without a main source of heat is the pits. It was -35 this morning and I just checked and it is -22 now so it will go way cold tonight. I hear next week may be better as you send warmer temperatures this way. What happened to Global warming anyways?
ReplyDeleteStay warm Red!
Yep, not fun. But here in southeast PA, it seldom gets even 10 below, let alone 20 or 30.
DeleteNo disrespect intended Red. If I came off that way, I apologize.
ReplyDelete6:00 Am and it's light! Awesome.
ReplyDeleteI think if you're prepared you can pretty much handle anything. I once loved really hot weather until I spent a summer in Phoenix, AZ. I discovered that it's easier to know how to keep warm than it is to cool off. We do adapt though.
ReplyDeleteIt's really climate change . Some people get record precipitation or other extremes. Being without a furnace is nasty. It's stressful.
ReplyDelete32 degrees centigrade? Positively balmy after your recent 41 degree low. I guess you were out gardening in your Homer Simpson shorts.
ReplyDeleteOh boy! Stay warm!
ReplyDeleteI can take cold temperatures much better than hot myself. You can bundle up for the weather, but when it's really hot, you have only so much you can do with clothing.
ReplyDeleteThat is cold! We're in a deep freeze right now but our temperatures haven't gone that low...thankfully!
ReplyDeleteI was OK with the cold weather when living in Illinois, but I have to say that after living in Hawaii again for the last 14 years, I get pretty cold when I go back to visit.
