THE HORSE STORY

I inadvertently set something up in my last post. My purpose in writing the post was to describe more of Heritage Ranch. I put in a small paragraph about my daughter riding at Heritage Ranch. That one little paragraph got more interest than the whole post.

My kids were raised in the 1970's which was the day of free range kids. The kids were sometimes gone all afternoon and we didn't really know where they were. Yes, we had a good idea of where they might be and the kids knew where  they could go and where they could not go.

Heritage Ranch was about 2 1/2 miles from my house. I think my daughter rode her bike out with a friend to ride horses. I'm not sure which parent gave permission to go.

She told me that the horses to rent were very  gentle but not that smart. Some of the riders weren't that smart either. She remembers the ride and still talks about it. The horse was not a smooth ride and it really didn't go that fast.

She did survive without accident and went on to ride many more horses. At 49 she's still interested in riding some more.

She made comments on the last post as unknown. I hope she comments on this post and corrects my memory.

These photos of horses at Heritage Ranch were taken long after her time at Heritage Ranch.

I have always loved horses. Pretty carriages and horses. Have a great day and a happy new week!

  2. Lovely memories! I grew up around that period and I enjoyed the freedom we had. We were out all day and only returned home when the streetlights went on.

  3. Every time you come up with posts like this one and the last one they just add variety of the many varied and interesting posts that you write. Though a pretty poor horseman, I used to enjoy riding so it's good to see the horses in the posts.

  5. I suspect that the parent who agreed to the equine adventures over at Heritage Ranch would have been Mr K.Kline as he is a big softie. I am sure his daughter could have easily wrapped him round her little finger. On the other hand, Mrs J.Kline would not have been such an easy pushover.

    1. Well, I happened to have been at the ranch at the same time as the rider so it wasn't me. I asked that question to my daughter today and she couldn't remember.

  7. I grew up a "free range" kid in the 1960s. But my kids in the 1990s ... not so much. My then-wife and I used to ride horses as young adults in the 1970s. All I remember about it is that the horses would run a lot faster when it was time to return to the barn!

    1. So true about horses and they also know when the rider is not in control.

  8. Ah "free range kids" -- I remember the days. My sibs and I could wander the neighborhood and play all day. I'm glad your daughter still likes riding horses.

  9. “Free range kids” is a good description. Times have sure changed. My children were raised out in the country and meet the definition of free range, but their children, my grandchildren, live in a completely different world today.

    1. Parents have made their kids terrified of what dangers could be out there rather than giving them a chance to meet and solve any problems.

  11. How wonderful that your daughter had the opportunity to ride when she was young. I had a few chances to go riding when I was young and I loved it.

My boys were free range kids and did fine. It is sad that is an unsafe option today.

  13. The seventies were a good time to raise kids. If mine had not reappeared when the street lights came on, I would get on my bike and go looking. Most parents sat outside, and I would roll up the drive, ask mom or dad if my girls were there. Eventually I would hit the jackpot.

  14. Hi Red, Thanks for finishing the story. :-) Hey, I've got to give you thumbs up on these photos. These are slides you're scanning, right? Wow, they are coming out sharp and clear. You must have been taking good care of them! Very nice!

    2. Well, darn it, I should have known. I guess I was thrown by the date stamp on there ... 2015 ... being 6, almost 7 years ago ... and putting together with your recent posting of your slides. But, now that I think about it, that was about 15 years into the digital age. Do you recall when you took your first digital photo? I just looked in my archives and see that my very first digital photo was taken March 3 1999. This kind of thing fascinates me. How about showing us some of your first digital photos, OR, maybe you have already done that in some of your early blog posts back ten or more years?

  15. My kids, now in their early to mid twenties were pretty much free range. I trusted them and they mostly deserved that trust. I truly don't believe the world is as dangerous as people think.

I love the photos of the horses, as a city girl I haven't really been up close to horses more than a handful of times but there's something special about them. I watch gentle horse training videos sometimes, it's lovely to see the progress they make with a knowledgable and gentle trainer

  16. Yes, I amazed at the liberties that I had as a child to roam around that my children no longer have.

  17. LOL -- how does one evaluate the intelligence of a horse? I was a "free-range kid" in that time period, too.

  21. While I would not like to ride a horse, as your daughter did many years ago, I would enjoy a ride in a horse-pulled carriage like the white one in these photos Red.

  22. My kids never got into horses though they've ridden them. I'm so glad your kids have such lovely memories of it. I wish we could have those days when the kids could run around the neighborhood without parents constantly worrying about where they are every minute.
