Have you ever heard of iliotibial bands? No, I'd never heard of them either.
Do you have iliotibial bands? I didn't know I had any until today.
Iliotibial bands are huge tissue bands that run from the outside of the pelvis , over the hip and knee and attach just below the knee. It's one of the bigger tissues in the body and keeps your knee in alignment.
I found out that I have one of these, well, actually two as you have a band on both legs. I began having pain in my hip, knee and the muscles from my hip to the knee. At first the pain was intermittent and not too severe. It's worse at night and is not very noticeable in the day time.
Iliotibial syndrome is caused by overuse of the tissue. Many athletes and runners have iliotibial syndrome.
So to treat this syndrome you have to give it some rest. There are many stretches that can be used. Google iliotibial stretch and you'll find many websites with recommended stretches. treatment takes a long time and you have to be patient.
I got my problem when I first raked grass this spring. I could feel the discomfort that day. I rake my grass twice so that I get rid of the thatch and then the grass has a better chance to start growing. I then proceeded to dig my garden by hand with the fork. By the time I'd finished these projects, I was in trouble.
So I will be on good behavior for the next while trying to rest and stretch so the the iliotibial band recovers.
A new term to me.
ReplyDeleteIt's simple and obvious but i wasn't aware of it.
DeleteThe condition doesn't sound too good. Take care.
ReplyDeleteIt can be cured as I don't meet people walking around with the condition.
DeleteThat is a new term to me. I aced Anatomy and Physiology in Nursing school. It sounds like a profound muscle. I must be starting to lose my memory. Take care of that one. Sounds like it can cause pain in a lot of areas. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteWell, I might get into trouble with this comment but maybe the bands were developed in man after your nursing course!!!
DeleteLOL! Well, I'm oldish, but not that old. Thanks for the laugh. Hope you can have less pain. Linda in Kansas
DeleteHope you do the exercises and get better!
ReplyDeleteYes, I'll stick to the regime.
DeleteI never heard that term but the pain sure sounds familiar! Be good and rest and if you have to do something just do a little at a time. You can probably hire someone for your yard work until you are better.
ReplyDeleteThe better I behave, the sooner I'll be better.
DeleteCan they do trigger point therapy? or dry needling? i get those and they huuurrt but they are very effective.
ReplyDeleteRest up and get better, Red
That sound like it would be used to treat muscle knots.
DeleteWell, I never knew I had such things - and I hope they don't make themselves known in the way that yours have! After all that raking and forking you deserve a good rest. Take it easy.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I have the rest f the summer to rest up.
DeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteSounds painful, I hope you feel better soon. Take care, have a great day and week ahead!
It's miserable at night. It seems that there's no way to lie without being on a sore spot.
DeleteI hope you recover soon, Red. It would be sad to miss the good weather since we wait so long for it.
ReplyDeleteOh I think I should be mobile. I'm mobile now but there is the odd owy and at night it's very painful.
DeleteYour bands are in a bit of a bind.
ReplyDeleteI hope I get my bands fixed up before other things get in a bind!
DeleteI have pain down my right leg from an old injury. It flares up now and then, but it does get better. I wonder if it is the same muscle that is bothering me. Good luck on resting it.
ReplyDeleteFunny how we have things that hurt and no clear explanation.
DeleteIt's so frustrating to have an injury that stops you from doing what you want to do. I've had a leg injury from bending too much ( playing pickleball) and despite resting it for 6 months. It came back immediately when I started playing again. Hope you heal quickly.
ReplyDeleteI've not played pickle ball but I'd like to try.
DeleteHope you get relief from your pain, Red. Less work; more stretching - feel better!
ReplyDeleteI'm working at it.
DeleteI hadn't ever heard of this before. Hope it doesn't last too long and that rest and good behavior helps out in every way.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you throw "the good behavior" in there.
DeleteI have never heard of an "iliotibial band" -- but I hope yours heal soon!
ReplyDeleteI don't think it is a common ailment.
DeleteYou take it easy! I find it increasingly tough to do such activities without some penalty from my muscles!
ReplyDeleteHey, you're still a young thing. wait until you get very old!
DeleteKinda sounds like what I have been calling tendonitis, and I've had it for months and months.
ReplyDeleteWell it's not in the tendons. I'm sure many people have this to some degree and don't know it.
DeleteNope, that's a new term for me. I hope yours heals well and as fast as possible. It's hard to rest when you are used to being active, but in the long run it will pay off. Do you have any quiet hobbies like crosswords or doing jigsaw puzzles?
ReplyDeleteSomething else that can go wrong! Take it easy ... and do those stretches.
ReplyDeleteGoodness, I hope you feel better soon. Sounds very uncomfortable and no, I have never heard of these but I am now a little more educated. Thank you Red :)
ReplyDeleteI never knew about iliotibial band syndrome, but this does not sound like a good time. Maybe you'll be needing that wheel chair a little more quickly than you thought.
ReplyDeleteFeel better soon.
To give your iliotibial bands chance to recover, it would be good if Jean does all the work around your place from now on. You can just sit in your armchair and watch TV - occasionally calling out to Jean to bring you a snack and a drink.
ReplyDeleteThat's definitely something I've never heard of. I hope you heal quickly! This time of year it's hard to not overdo it.
ReplyDeleteThat is a heck of a big name for something no one learns about...unless I was sleeping in class that time.
ReplyDeleteI am starting to realize that longer I spend on this earth that after hard work is done that resting and stretching are part of the program to remain functional and to control "soreness" or pain. Take care Red.
