84 years ago today was a very pleasant warm day on the Saskatchewan prairie when a baby boy was born in a small wooden shack to a young couple. Yes, That was me!
Since I was the oldest the birth must have impressed them and Dad told this story many times to anyone who would listen. He never told me the story. I just remember listening to it many times.
The country doctor attended and sat and smoked and read the Reader's Digest. Mom's two friends Linda Kabernik and Margaret Mehaffey attended to the serious business of the event. The doctor probably tied my cord and left. For all that work, or lack of work, the Doctor got $10.00.
Meanwhile on that warm day Dad stayed busy on the yard. His help was to stay out of the way.
I always think that I've been fortunate to have the story of my birth. I don't remember my siblings having much of a story about their births.
A lovely story Red- it has all gone a bit more 'clinical' these days. Happy Birthday.l
ReplyDeleteAnd it should be very clinical as there are too many things that can go wrong during a delivery.
DeleteHappy birthday to you! Take care, have a great day and happy new week!
ReplyDeleteThank you. we get snow this week.
DeleteAh yes, the first kids gets the extra attention. In our case, the first grand got a lot more pictures taken. The second did get his share though.
ReplyDeleteVery true.
DeleteHappy birthday Red!
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteHappy birthday to you, Red!
ReplyDeleteThank you . As my bother says about our ages, "the numbers are getting big."
DeleteHappy birthday, Red (belatedly).
ReplyDeleteThankyou I'll let you be late just this one time.
DeleteHappy Birthday! I think most of us now were just born in hospitals, with no interesting birth stories.
ReplyDeleteWe were in a remote area. Two of my siblings were born in town where the doctor lived. My youngest sibling was born in a small country hospital.
DeleteHappy birthday, Red.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteYes, happy birthday, Red, another journey around the sun!
ReplyDeleteI wonder how many miles that would be!
DeleteHappy Birthday Red! I hope you have a great day!
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteSadly, although I was the oldest of five, I do not remember my parents telling any story about my birth.
ReplyDeleteMany parents don't tell about the births. Sad.
DeleteSo you cost your folks ten bucks, which was a lot of money back in those days. But . . . I'm sure you're worth it! Happy birthday.
ReplyDeleteWell, since it was so little, I guess I'm worth it!
DeleteHappy Birthday Red! The day of your birth is wonderful! So nice that your mother had her two friends there.
ReplyDeleteIt was probably exciting for the whole neighborhood.
DeleteHappy birthday young man!
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteHappy Birthday! I was born in a hospital but I think it cost the $13.00. We lived in poverty but the house was a country Sears built home. I was the youngest and it was sad that I was just another boy of four.
ReplyDeleteUsually the eldest got all the attention. However, few people had cameras at that time so not very many people have pictures of their childhood.
DeleteHappy birthday. It's a good story, don't forget it.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Well, I don't have too much time to forget it .
DeleteWell the big day has come and gone. Just for fun I asked Google, “What’s the difference between birth day and birthday?” Interesting answer: You can talk about your “birth day”, meaning the actual day of your birth, or your birthday, which is the same day each year. Thanks for the story about your birth day. 😊 (Possibly only a teacher will appreciate this comment.) 😊
ReplyDeleteWell, I get it and it makes a lot of sense. However, I would never thought about this so it's good that we have guys who march to a different tune.
DeleteOh, I love the story and the picture. Happy birthday Red!
ReplyDeleteI don't think too many 84 year olds have baby pictures, so you are lucky! Happy Birthday and many happy returns :)
ReplyDeleteBeing adopted, I don't have a great birth story, either! Happy birthday!
ReplyDeleteA belated happy birthday!
ReplyDeleteMy father described the day of my birth as the longest of his life.
Happy be-Birthday, Red!!!
ReplyDeleteMy mother has told me many times of my birth. I was born almost 2 months early. It was very traumatic apparently.
And we like to remind my son that he was born 2 weeks early and his father had to deliver him by himself in the hospital elevator. It's still one of the highlights in Art's life.
