MORE FREE RANGE

When I was looking for photos on my last post I ran into some other interesting photos.

I've written about my childhood in the 40's and 50's. Sometimes it's hard to believe what I was writing.

So this photo may be from around 1945. The three kids are my brother and sister and I. And of course, Dad. This was winter transportation. I don't know where we had been . This was not a fancy sleigh to go for a sleigh ride singing Jingle Bells. This was a work sleigh. The horses where Queenie and Daisy. Queenie was very old. Daisy was a younger horse.

So this was winter transportation.  We didn't have snow clearing equipment. Cars had not yet been built for winter driving.

However , the photo shows part of our life when we had to use horses for winter transportation.

  1. Sounds like you had a rich, fun, exciting childhood and are full of wonderful memories. It's fun for me since our childhoods were so totally different.

  2. That's an amazing photo. One of my husbands grew up on a farm in North Dakota, 60 miles from the Canadian border. Of the 9 siblings, the last 4 were born in a hospital. The challenge was getting over the snowy roads to the hospital (1948). I wouldn't want to be in labor during such a ride! Linda in Kansas

  13. It always take me a bit by surprise to realize that the past is not all that distant. I enjoyed that picture. We have a picture in our hall. Tim's mother gave it to us. She said she bought it at a garage sale. Imagine our surprise when we realized we were looking at a picture of Tim's great grandfather, hat in hand, standing next to his horse.

  14. I find it amazing that there are still people around who used horses as daily transport.
My dad is about your age and I think he has mentioned a horse, I'll have to ask.
What a life you have lived
