IT FINALLY HAPPENED

When I was raising my kids we did not have a pet in the house or out of the house.

So you guessed it. When the kids went out on their own they got dogs that lived with them in the house.

My son's first dog was a beagle and that was a challenge. His second dog was a beautiful calm lab.

My daughter's first dog was a spunky mini schnauzer. It kept you entertained all day. Her latest dog is of a mysterious pedigree but it's small.

Small dogs seem to like chasing squirrels. The Schnauzer never missed chasing a squirrel. Her present dog also never misses an opportunity to chase squirrels.

A few days ago my daughter was sitting in the porch to keep cool. The dog was with them. My daughter saw a squirrel so tried to alert the dog to the presence of the squirrel. The dog beat it around the house and back completely missing the presence of the squirrel. . Okay my daughter tried again to show the squirrel and this time the dog caught on and chased the squirrel. Wonder of wonders the dog caught the squirrel. My daughter was surprised and horrified that the little squirrel had been caught. The dog had a very surprised look and let the squirrel go much to my daughter's relief.

So dog and owner were surprised that it finally happened that the dog caught a squirrel.

I wonder if the dog will keep chasing squirrels?

  1. Dogs and squirrels have a built in aversion from what we’ve seen with the grand-dogs. I am glad the squirrel got away!

    1. I think the squirrels like to tease the dogs. Squirrels stay just out of reach.

  4. My guess is the little dog will become a dedicated hunter from now on but I would be happy to be proven wrong

  6. LOL, the squirrels have always been faster than my old dogs.
Take care, enjoy your day and have a great week ahead.

  7. My sister's Papillon used to chase and occasionally catch squirrels. Now he's too old and doesn't care any more.

  11. We had a mostly outside dog that came in at night when I was growing up. Fortunately my kids don't care for dogs but they do pester me about getting a cat. Since we don't have family or really anyone close to look after a pet when we are gone on vacation, I have resisted getting one. So many of my friends don't go on vacations unless they go somewhere pet friendly so they can take their pet.

  12. We love dogs, my Mother never allowed a dog inside. We had a Sheltie named Misty who caught a chipmunk...the chippy bit her on the nose...needless to say she killed the chippy and it was all out war against all the chippys in the world!

  17. We had two cairns, a male and a female. They caught mice. The female would corner one and the male would dispatch it.

  22. Wow! I'm amazed he caught the squirrel. My son's dog, Mungo used to go crazy barking at squirrels but he never caught one.
