Debby, from Life's Funny Like That asked (dared) me to find the real tuques and post a photo.
Well , that's not really a dare. The hardest part was to find a photo. Now along with the dare she's going to get a story.
The photo is when I was attempting to ice fish on Dolomite lake(Airport Lake) about Nov. of 1965. Airport lake is just below the runway of the Inuvik airport. Now I don't remember catching any fish while ice fishing but I did catch lots of fish in the summer. We probably didn't put enough time in to catch fish in the winter.
These tuques had a habit of shrinking as they were washed. They were of thick heavy wool and very warm. The head is the first part of the body to cool off. Keep your head warm and your whole body stays warm.
A very good hat, keeping you visible as well as warm. Yes, heat rises
ReplyDeleteThey are warm and I've worn them all my life.
DeleteThat old tuque makes you look like one of Santa's elves pole dancing.
ReplyDeleteGood imagination!
DeleteGreat photo of you ice fishing! On a cold winter day, wearing a Tuques sounds nice. Take care, have a great week!
ReplyDeleteCold is only elative. I'm not sure what the temperature might have been.
DeleteThat tuque looks like a modified Santa hat! I would want my tuque to cover my ears but maybe your tuque did until it shrunk!
ReplyDeleteThe tuque covered my ears well but I was warm so the tuque was pushed back.
DeleteGrr i happened to look for my very nice and new orange tuque yesterday. Alas, I could not find it.
ReplyDeleteOkay, now we have to see that tuque.
DeleteThat looks like Santa’s hat, Red.
ReplyDeleteThat one would pass for a Santa hat.
DeleteIt looks so cold!
ReplyDeleteWell, it was well above the arctic circle.
DeleteBut your ears would be freezing, Red! It looks like a small Santa hat but I need something much larger to cover my head and ears. I get the idea, though. :)
ReplyDeleteI was working digging the hole and I was warm.
DeleteThat almost looks like a Santa hat! Cover your ears too! I also want to say that I much prefer the term "tuque" to what Americans call such hats - stocking caps. Bleah! It was a shock to move here and realize almost nobody (my French speaking husband being an exception) here knew what a tuque was. Every English-speaking Canadian knows that one!
ReplyDeleteI was working hard digging the hole so I was warm . When I cooled down the tuque was pulled down and the parka put back on. It's been a surprise to find other names for the same thing. People can call it whatever they like but I call it a tuque.
DeleteCute tuque! -Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI don't know if these are made anymore.
DeleteOh that must be freezing dear Red
ReplyDeleteeven looking you standing in that ice makes me shiver with cold
i saw such hole digging in ice only in movies wow you led an adventurous life indeed
I was warm because it was hard work. I don't know what the temperature was .
DeleteMy Dad always wore his hats rolled up over his ears like that. Thanks for the reminder on tuque - that's a good one for the back pocket in a Scrabble game!
ReplyDeleteWhen you got cold you pulled the tuque down and over your ears.
DeleteIt must have been cold when you were out there breaking the ice.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what the temperature might have been.
Deleteit does look a little snug, probably because of, as you said, shrinkage after washing. Nice looking tuque, though.
ReplyDeleteThey were stretchy and when cold one just pulled it down over the ears.
DeleteRed, You’re getting high marks from me. Nice work on taking up Debby’s DOUBLEDOG dare. How did you like that comment “Cute tuque!”? 😊 The truth is those hats do keep your head warm and I like to wear them on my walks on windy days … ball caps just fly off. Red, you are on a roll. Keep up the good work. John
ReplyDeleteSome people can stir up some fun in the blog world.
DeleteYou don't look very warmly dressed, but I guess you were generating heat breaking through the ice.
ReplyDeleteHere in the US we called those caps Watch Caps, but now they are being called Beanies. Sounds just wrong to me. Beanies are small brimless cats that sit on the top of the head, are not for warmth. and sometimes had a propeller on top. :-)
My parka was just not in the photo. I had taken it off because I was hot.
DeleteNice photo!! A red hat is a great choice it stands out against the snow:)
ReplyDeleteWell, I am delighted you 'tuque' my dare. Thanks for the story AND the picture.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful photo and a wonderful memory... I'm thrilled.
ReplyDeleteI love everything you wear on your head and have knitted or sewed a lot of caps, hats and the like... it's really fun. And it's important - just like you say, the head has to be warm - just like the feet :-)))
A hug for you.
Viola
I like you in that tuque and enjoyed your memories. Thanks Red!
ReplyDeleteBrrrr.... But your ears are exposed!
