Weather has been a big topic for the last week. It's a major holiday week end and people want to be travelling. It's the beginning of winter and we want to see winter come as late as possible.
Some of the weather reports this weekend are brutal. Reports of 3 ft. of snow is enough to paralyze me. Certain areas have been paralyzed. In Ontario , Canada , many people have been without power for several days and for some people it looks like a few more days without power.
In some areas of the U.S. they are expecting 2 to 3 ft of snow. How long will it take to clean that up and transportation be restored?
What do people do? For most people everything depends on power. Very few people are off grid. Very few people have their own power supply. Very few people have another source of heat like wood.
If the power was off at my place for 4 or 5 days we would have trouble surviving.
We've had a very cold week. Our lows have been in the minus 17 to 19C degree. This isn't that bad. We are easily able to get around. We look after our needs in the usual way.
It is forecast to warm up here in the next few days. Here's my one hope. I hope it doesn't get too warm. If it gets above freezing we get ice. Roads become slippery and walking is risky. So warm up but not too warm.
Far all of you with severe winter conditions I hope you stay safe and as comfortable as possible.
Wishing you enough power and no ice !
ReplyDeleteAt the moment we are forecast a "cold snap"..but then back again to grey wet and windy...the joys of living on an offshore continental island!
Hello,
ReplyDeleteIt is really cold here this week, only 24° this morning.
I am not a winter person, I do not like the cold weather. Your minus temps are just way too cold. Take care, have a great day and a happy new week.
oh i am sorry for the heavy snow in your area dear Red
ReplyDeleteminus 17 is horrible to even read omg
hope you don't loose power
We had a nice, light snowfall yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI always think of apartment buildings when the power is out for extended periods. So cold…brrr
ReplyDeleteWe have not yet had a killing frost, so we are still not too worried about the cold weather. It's clear and cold but not too bad.
ReplyDeleteWe're cold here but no snow expected in the forecast, I think. I'm lucky to be retired as then I don't have to go out if the roads are bad. I'm lucky to have my oldest son living with me and he handles the snow shoveling. Yes, no power would be a huge problem! I hope we all stay safe this winter, Red.
ReplyDeleteThe way it is looking outside right now with the temperature already just below freezing, it is best to prepare for ice. Stay safe yourself if you are out and about!
ReplyDeleteRed, You probably know about the big storm that hit the Pacific Northwest a couple of weeks ago. There were neighborhoods here in Seattle without power for a full week. We hope you get the warm up but not too warm! John
ReplyDeleteWell, I hope your power stays on and whatever your weather is like, it's not too severe. We've been pretty warm here, all things considered.
ReplyDeleteI can understand how very difficult it would be to lose power in Canada's coldest months for more than just a few hours. Even three days without power would be life-threatening for many. In Yorkshire it would also be hard but survival would not be quite as challenging.
ReplyDeleteYes, it snowed a lot here in NE Ohio, where I live. Buffalo had more.
ReplyDeleteExcept fpr occasional wind storms, we are fortunate here to not have extreme weather. A few inches of snow can bring everything to a standstill though.
ReplyDeleteI just checked the radar and nothing is in the forecast for us. But I have not the patience for cold weather anymore. Now it was 63 F. here today so that's not cold but the nights have a chill on them that I can no longer appreciate. Old age is hell!
ReplyDeleteBrrr, that sounds COLD! I remember as a kid losing power for 5 days during an ice storm. Fireplace was on and we blocked off parts of the house to keep the front room warm and all slept in there. As a kid it was fun, I wouldn't want to do it now.
ReplyDeleteNo snow or ice here but it is getting colder.
ReplyDelete-17 would bring tears to my eyes. That's cold. Back in 2008 when I first began my blog, we had a couple weeks where it was miserably cold and it just stayed there, day after day after day. The only thing that was good about it was that when it was that cold, at the very least, we did not have a lot of snowfall. Parts of that winter had Tim shoveling off the roof.
ReplyDeleteWe have a gas fireplace so we will not freeze stiff..we might be cold but not frozen if the power goes out. We had some mighty winds today and I am surprised that more trees didn't blow over... A few trees were down along the Highway.
ReplyDeleteBlack ice is the worst! My daughter in Chicago was telling me about the brutal cold this week. It's usually frigid in January so having it this cold so soon was not appreciated.
