PAST TV

I started thinking about television today. I don't know how those thoughts got started as I don't watch TV. I don't watch one minute of TV all year.

I was thinking about the first TV I saw. We were 80 miles from the TV station. We put a 40 ft. antennae on top of the house. We got one station and it was snowy. Sometimes you didn't get any picture at all.  It was black and white. You had to get up and go to the TV to turn it off or on. (Actually I was thinking about remotes that started me thinking about old television.)

TV reception improved a little. Then we got cable or something and brought in 3 or 4 channels. You still had to get up and go to the TV to turn it off or on or change stations. It still wasn't color.

I don't remember when we got color TV.

I don't know when remote controls came in but that saved us a lot of effort as we didn't have to get up to change channels. Now we have many channels so sometimes there is a lot of channel changing.

Color came and it was not that clear.

Now we have so many channels that we don't know what to watch.

Well, you could be like me and not watch TV.

  1. I think we got our first black and white about 1955. We had an antenna and good reception out of Portland, Oregon. From the first, I was addicted to TV. I still am, but I only watch it in the evenings, except for sports on weekends.

  3. I spent the first 20 years of my life without a television. I have I think three of them now and do watch a couple hours a day on them, mostly news or educational type shows. Books are still my main source of entertainment as they have been all my life. I'm probably on book number 20 or so for the year already.

  7. Most of my time I am on my laptop, but now and then I turn on the TV to watch the news. There are way too many commercials for me and I usually give up in disgust.

  8. Yes, I remember having to get up to turn the TV on and off or change the channels. I also remember when the TVs turned to color. We used to watch Disney's Wonderful World of Color together on Sunday evenings. I watch TV but mostly only in the evenings for an hour or two. I like a lot of British shows.

  9. Kay of Musings: Hi Red! Good morning. I’m in Chicago right now. We usually just watch a hand full of shows that we record and watch when we have time. I can’t remember when we got color TV in Hawaii. Such a long time ago,.

  11. We only watch specialty streams to which we have subscribed. Nothing else comes in bc we don’t have an aerial and don’t subscribe to cable. We would have gotten our first colour tv in ‘78 just before the birth of second granddaughter. At least that is how I remember it. When I was growing up, our first tv ever would have arrived when I was about 10 in ‘57, and we got one English Channel.

  13. Red, Very interesting. I’m going to guess that in Canada (and the USA) the percent of people who don’t watch TV is small, but not as small as it was, say 10 years ago. Do you stream programs on your computer? That is becoming more common. I just asked Google: Is any CBC programming streamed on the internet? The answer came back: “Yes, CBC programming is streamed on the internet, primarily through CBC Gem.” Do you consider this watching TV? I watch YouTube TV which is not as expensive as cable and it has all of the local broadcasts in the Seattle area. Now, to answer your question for me in your last post, yes, I keep a poetic journal 😊 … sort of like a diary. Thank you for your kind words about my poetry. John

    1. I knot that there are places to get TV. We have a TV and the micro manager watches each evening. I have looked at Gem but it's not and option. I wish more people would write. they have to think about things when they write. You seem to be able to bang out a poem very easily.

  16. i think people choose different hobbies for various reason ,you are lucky that you are a man and then in a country where you can do birding with like minded friends
i could have choose birding if i have an opportunity to do so because i know i love to spend time in nature and no other hobby can replace it if i have chance to do so as i used to do back in my native town
now i can do another thing that i love most "writing" but i watch tv instead because it's adjustable with homely distractions and it also make me and hubby provide chance to spend time together
i am thankful for the remote :)
